Macquarie Debit Card Not Working in SBI ATM India

Anyone else had this issue? I've tried 2 now including the one at T3 Delhi airport and both transaction errored. I've pre-notified Macq about the trip through the app and used in HK ATM without issue. Have also paid at a hotel with it.

My Citibank and ING debit cards work fine. Lucky I have plan B, C and D (28 deg but haven't tried in ATM yet).

Update: Macq card worked again back in HK. Beware of relying on Macq card for ATMs in less developed countries.

Thank you for doing the needful, please revert at the earliest.

    • I will also go once there is a price error business class flight.

  • How much INR are you trying to withdraw?
The max you can do at one time is INR10,000.00

    • seriously? that's not even $200 dollarydoos

      • On top of that, the max denomination is 500 rupees.

        • And then you have to deal with ‘no change’ when you go to use those 500 rupee notes

@Gunnar: Yes! Damn it. How do people get change everyday if nobody ever has it.

      • India is more cashless than AU. But its tied to few local players(Paytm/gpay) and its a PITA to get it working with international cards.

        • I've been reading it's supposed to be possible to get a foreigner UPI account setup at Delhi airport.

    • Yes 10,000. As mentioned, Citibank and ING have worked fine in the same ATMs after my Macq card gets rejected.

Are you using the 'Credit' function on the Debit Card?
You need to click 'Credit' to force the transaction to go through the Mastercard Network on some ATMs internationally.

    • Can try this part. Been pressing Savings, but Citibank debit card is MC as well.

    • "Credit" dosent work. Same error.

  • Maybe the ATM recognizes Citibank and ING as they're both large multinational banks compared to Macquarie?

    • All the ATM has to recognize is the Visa/Mastercard.

Maybe the ATM may want to look at the market caps -

      Citibank $93 Billion
      ING $50 Billion
      Macquarie $43 Billion
      CBA $179 Billion

    • Citibank sold out their brand name in India to an Indian bank called Axis bank. It is not a global bank in India.

What did Macquarie say when you asked them?

    • +2

Via Facebook as directed by their Contact Us page:
"You are able to use your debit card at any ATM or Merchant that accepts international Mastercard otherwise your transaction may be rejected."

Do know of a way I can raise a JIRA ticket and get this added to a sprint? They could track my card number, the ATM location and approximate timing of the transaction. I could also show them my Citibank debit MC transaction to compare.

Sounds like you asked a bot and not someone at Macquarie

        • -1

What's the email address of their CEO?

  • It's not Macquarie, it's the atm that decide not to accept it. Some banks are more picky than the other in accepting other cards just like a merchant in Cambodia might accept your US$10 note but not another merchant in India.

  • Try an only Visa / MasterCard ATM. I was just in Hong Kong and had no issues, now I'm in another Asian country and have paid and withdrawn cash without issue. However, the ATM limits vary, I could only withdraw the equivalent of $400 AUD at a time (as per ATM limit).

On local cards' ATM it didn't work, you have to find an ATM in the touristic area.

    • SBI is the biggest bank in India. The ATM I used was located at the arrival terminal of the biggest International airport in India.

  • Reviving a bit of an old thread:
    - Macquarie bank debit card on SBI bank ATMs.
    — Doesn't work, and produces error code 001. Called Macquarie support and they tried to do sort of live troubleshooting, and they say the ATM withdrawal request never made it to Macquarie network, and they did not produce that error. Called SBI bank, but it is very difficult to make them understand the issue(request not being sent to foreign bank), so gave up.

    • ING debit card on SBI bank ATMs.
      — Used to work few days ago. As of today, the only option to withdraw is if you allow them the conversation (doesn't work of you try to withdraw without conversation).

ING/Macquarie on Punjab bank : Doesn't work (used to work few weeks ago).

ING/Macquarie on AXIS(city?) bank : Works but charges you extra INR 300

**Selected credit option and then also savings option for Macquarie card.

    • Maybe there's no free method to get money from Indian ATMs using foreign cards anymore?

      • Not sure, I tried one more ATM today from Kotak Mahindra bank.
Both ING and Macquarie didn't work.

        • ING worked with IDFC bank.
Doesn't give you option to select INR or AUD, but it allowed ING to handle the conversation and dispersed INR without any charges or conversion fees.
