  • What's the process like with insurance and "claims" of you damaging it? Is there a maximum excess you pay?

    • +1

By memory the standard excess is $2000 for a claim, can be decreased to $500 for an extra fee ($12?).

      • That sounds reasonable then. Good idea to test drive different cars in more "demanding" scenarios without a car salesperson in the seat next to you.

        • Check out Turo. More expensive but you can select by car make and model.

    • I had a bad experience with them once in which I lost the case and had to pay. Make sure to always take detailed photos before and after you use the car. If there is something that was not covered by the photo, then you'll be liable to pay for whatever thing the car owner may claim.

      • +1

As an owner, Uber Carshare has always double-checked photos from previous bookings to find out the actual condition of the car.
Owners cannot make bogus claims as there is GPS on cars, and in case the car is damaged, the owner has to justify before and after booking conditions.

Feel free to ask more questions

  • Anyone know if this is available and can be used in NZ?

  • Does the car need to be picked up and dropped off at the same location? Need to get from the city to home with some stuff in a couple of weeks but don't want to have to get back to the city again to drop it off again.

    • Yes, you have to drop off the car at the same location.

    • +1

Yes, think about it as someone's car with a secure keybox attached for after-hours collection/drop off (contactless in most cases)

Without a code, it can be expensive. Europcar van hire is $99 unlimited kms. I got charged $160 using a $150 voucher plus a deposit of $150 bond. Cost $10 in the end but without discount code it’s more expensive

  • At which step is this code applied? Can you register and claim the credit without any booking? Thinking of giving Uber a try, but have no immediate plans to book…

Also, can this be used together with the $50 referral bonus? (So $175 credits in total?)

    • Try to create an account (use the referral link) and then add the code to your account?
It should come up as a promo and saved it the wallet

      • I successfully did a $175 trip yesterday. Cost $0

This coupon code no longer works (in 2024). These are working for first-time borrowers:

    UCS131, UCS132 and UCS133 all for $100 are working.

    UCS1991 and UCS2001 for $50 are working.
