Portable Type 2 EV Charger for Single Phase 7kW 32A $399 Delivered @ EVchargers

200

If you have a EV or someone who is planning to buy one soon like me, I think this is a very good deal atm

Most homes in Australia are single phase, this will get your ev charged quickly. Just get a caravan socket installed and you are sorted. This is portable so you can take it during long road trips unlike expensive tesla wall charger which will also give you same speed on single phase but fixed to wall.

Note : I'm no EV guru, neither I own one atm. Neighbour (model y owner) got this installed last week and was generous to explain me.
I'm thinking of getting one for future proof. Hoping model 2 / seagull will cost under 30k.
Else might buy a used tesla once elon drops prices under 30k 😛

TIP : if you plan to install a 32a socket, just tell sparky you want a caravan socket installed, once you tell them the word EV the quote will sky rocket. So telling them for caravan might be a better bet.

Also there are options for 3 and 5 pin, neighbour told me to get the 5 pin which is widely adopted in caravan parks.

Please do research before you pull the plug

      Wouldn't a caravan plug (installed by a sparky) be 15A not 32A?

    • +3

There are different standards that need to be followed with EV chargers. For example the circuit will need to be protected by a type B RCD. Not giving the electrician the correct details can mean a non compliant installation. If anything goes wrong it could impact insurance etc.

    • What? The 15A GPO on a caravan socket will not take the 32A round plug in this deal. You will be stuck charging at a lower rate forever. It will affect V2G , trip out on overload. Is this s/?

  • Nice price. I'd also recommend getting the 5-pin plug over the 3-pin as it's more common "in the wild". It's a pity the 3-phase 22kW are so much more expensive…

    • There are plenty of cheap 3 phase 22kw units on ebay around $400, but as you say below they are unlikely to meet Australian standards

  • A question for EV owners:
I have a Tesla Gen 3 wall charger at home, but I am planning to buy a portable charger like this when I travel.

Does the brand make any difference? Or can I buy something cheaper like this from eBay?

I am not going to use this at home, but outdoor places like caravan park etc.

    • +4

The brand makes mostly no difference. The important thing is that its RCM (electrical safety) approved for use in Australia which this charger (in the deal) is. A lot of chargers that are imported from ebay or aliexpress aren't.

There's also a quite good video explaining level-2 chargers here

    I own one atm.

I guess that’s why you can afford an EV.

  • Hi. Do you need only change standard power point to 5pin power outlet ? Or need to wire it to
meter box? I have got the 3 phase. Thanks

    • I have got the 3 phase

Not a deal for 3 phase owners I guess. But you can charge a car upto 22kwph (eg BMW ix)

    • 32 amp sockets (regardless of single or 3 phase) need dedicated wiring to meter box

      • Thanks for the info 👍

  • So I buy this portable charger and get something like below installed in my garage by sparky?

  • Does the Tesla not include a mobile charger?

The "granny" chargers that most EV's come with are for plugging into a standard 240V outlet and the maximum charge rate it provides is 2.4kW (and that assumes you can safely constantly draw 10A from the outlet) - mostly they are for emergencies

      • +1

The standard 2.4kw chargers are better for preserving battery longevity. Fast chargers, especially DC fast chargers, cause the battery to heat up and degrade over time.

So if it suits your lifestyle and usage then stick with the 2.4kw chargers.

        • +1

Indeed - however Any AC charging is going to be slower and more battery friendly than always using DC fast charging (typically 50-350kw). Note that AC charging rates include 2.4kw granny chargers to dedicated AC chargers (e.g. single phase 7kw, 3 phase 11kw and 22kw (almost no EV's actually support 22kw AC charging)) - all of these are "slow" chargers (actually they technically aren't "chargers" at all - the AC charger is built into the car itself - these are EVSE's but we all call them "chargers" for "convenience")

However a 2.4kw granny charger would typically take 24-48hrs to "fully" charge many typical EV's (e.g. 20-80%) so the 7kw or 11kw AC charger is more realistic with an 8-12hr charge time

          • @Remorhaz:

But surely most of the time you're only charging from say 70% to 80% after each day of driving.
Unless you're doing massive kilometres every day, then you've got all night to charge back up at 2.4KW.

The 20-80% charge is only going to happen after a massive road trip, unless your commute is seriously long 😁

      • Tesla UMC Gen 2 is max 7kW

      • +1

I’ve had my Model Y for 6 months and have only been charging using the UMC, and only between 12am to 6am (8.4c/kwh OVO plan). Gives 20% charge in that time, which is more than enough for the daily runs. Will be installing a wall charger but only because we’re getting referal credits.

    • +4

No, Tesla no longer provides a mobile charger with their cars.

    • +1

Babes, says it multiple times when you order.
They even send and email after you pay the deposit telling you about how it’s not included ;)

    • Doesn't come with anything, you have to purchase….

Is this like having a family reunion instead of a wedding?

  • Does this plug into into a car cigarette lighter? Would be great if it did, could charge while on the road.

  • I have this, I have model Y. Had sparkie run circuit from panel to socket to suit (5metres no access issues as under a workers cottage and no walls), best our panel/Energex could supply was apparently 20A rather than 32A but charges fast overnight.recommended. Our sparkie charged >1k to run the circuit, I think because he could and it's an ev….looking forward to a recession and a reckoning…

  • If I read this right, this is not a charger but a charge adaptor - it is just an interface, and requires your car to have on onboard charger?

    • Yes, but pretty much all EV's have an onboard charger, so that's not really a concern.

You are correct in that it's not really a "charger" but rather a device for controlling and transferring AC power into an EV, where the EV's own onboard AC-DC convertor will do the actual charging.

For convenience, this is referred to as an "AC charger" or "granny charger" and is typically used for low-current overnight charging. It's quite a bit cheaper and more universally compatible with household wiring, so it's a good charger to carry in the car, allowing you to plug in almost anywhere.

  • I would fit a 32A Type two socket so that you can use your cable at shopping centres, supermarkets etc. barely anywhere has the caravan plug you mention as public chargers.

I feel like you would restrict yourself to a very few limited locations for charging

    • Isn't that exactly what the deal is ?

Portable Type 2 EV Charger for Single Phase 7kw 32A

    • This is ideally for home charging with low cost and also portable when you go for long drives. Please read the post again.

  • Any cheap 10A adapter or tail to go with this? Cant seem to find any

  • -3

I'd rater pay for expensive petrol than this EV rubbish. In USA right now EV owners are having people come into their homes to steal these cables & adapters. Stay safe EV fans!

    • +1

      Ok boomer!

    • I'd prefer to drive an EV as this reflects my commitment to preserving the planet for my daughter. Each to their own I guess.

  • Has anyone actually used this portable Type 2 charging cable other than their home / office setup? I'm just wondering how easy/practical is it to find a 5pin 32A socket?
What are your thoughts about the EVSwitch wall charger that is expected to be released soon for $499? For more info on these, do visit:

    • This is a deal specific for home with single please (which will max output 7kw). Only advantage is that you don't need a sparky if you change this charger unlike wall charger

If you have a 3 phase, go for a wall charger which will output upto 22kw max.
