Great book and well worth the read.

"Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck is a classic novella that explores the dreams, hardships, and complexities of human relationships during the Great Depression. The story revolves around two itinerant ranch workers, George Milton and Lennie Small, as they navigate a world marked by economic hardship and social injustice.

Set against the backdrop of the American West, the narrative delves into the deep friendship between George and Lennie, two contrasting characters bound by a shared dream of owning a piece of land. Lennie, despite his immense physical strength, possesses a childlike innocence that complicates their journey. The novel poignantly addresses themes of loneliness, the pursuit of the American Dream, and the harsh realities faced by those on the margins of society.

Enjoy!

    How to Win Friends

    Don't bring salad.

  • Says not available for purchase for me

    • +48

Maybe you've already got enough friends.

      • +4

Maybe the journey from finding out that this could be a great bargain to not able to add the books in his endless Kindle library was the friend he made along the way.

    • Working for me. Have you got a Kindle linked to your Amazon account?

    • Have to buy via browser not apps

    • Same here.

    • +1

Try changing the URL (Web address) to the USA store. Just remove the .au from the URL. Then buy. That's what I normally do.

  • +3

Why do people want to win friends and influence people?

    • +1

      For the clout ofcourse.

Think of the goods and services you be getting in return for shout outs.

    • +2

So you can get others to do things for you.

      • I believe the management speak for this is delegation.

        • Yes. But you would get better quality work/relationship if said person actually likes you.
Ie. Doing it for you, more than doing it because it's work. Comes handy if you want your stuff prioritised.

          • @Ughhh: Insert this is business meme here.

      • Bingo

    • So you can get those bargains before everyone else

    • +1

The title is a bit clickbaity but it's actually a really good book. Made a big difference to my career early on

How do you think Donald trump became president

      • +8

He doesn't read and doesn't have friends. Not seeing it.

        • +14

You caught me. It was an icebreaker. Are we friends now? 👀

          • +1

@Chocobros: Judging by the neg. You made an enemy instead.

Maybe the books instructions were not clear? Perhaps.

            • +4

@xoom: It's alright… It's probs old Donald negging what he thinks is fake news.

              • +2

@Chocobros: I rofl at this convo. You have a friend in me mate!

When all else failed he tried covfefe

    • I read it, I took away a couple of things which have helped my interactions with people. There are also parts that I ignored, and a bit of outdated stuff in the book, including some religious talk.

There are probably much better modern alternatives to this book.

      • There are probably much better modern alternatives to this book.

How to Win Friends and Influence People by Kim Jong Un?

Then theres the Russian version. Written by Vladimir Putin.

        /s

    • There's even mgmt course you can go that teaches the concepts from the book. Some stuff is outdated and from old office work space, especially nothing on dealing with younger generation and WFH. But it taught some communication and soft skills.

    • +1

As others have said, this book will probably teach you some overlooked/unlearned communication skills which will improve your face to face interactions with some people

    • The main 2 things I took away from it is that:

      1) be interested in what others have to say, start by listening.

      2) you can start a longer term acquaintance/friendship by asking for a favour. Even something simple can make them feel better about knowing you as they feel better in the power dynamic.

  • "All this will.some day be yours lad"

    "But I dont like curtains"

  • Says for me: "This title is not currently available for purchase. Have you moved recently? You may change your country/region on the Content and devices page."

Could be something to do with my kindle/amazon settings…?

    • +2

Have you moved recently? You may change your country/region on the Content and devices page."

I guess you will need some new friends since you moved.

I watch Hitler speech videos on YT Argentina

      • Be careful, you can get to jail these days

        • +1

          Cheaper than paying rent.

  • this is outdated, in modern times all you need to do is argue with people online, I suggest here is a good start and then move on to twitter where you will really join the pro leagues in influencing and winning friends, Dale has nothing on modern influencing

    • Omg it’s called PRESENT times, not Modern! And it’s “X” not “twitter”, Gramps, fr fr.

Dale is clearly more “modern” at influencing than you are!

      .. Are we friends now?

(Had to recomment as I hit unpublished like a scrub, why is that even a thing.. who edits to unpublish?)

      • we’re totally bbfs now where can I follow you

btw you’re wrong just because Elon musk changed the name of the company doesn’t mean it changed in my mind, x sounds like an app for porn anyway who would use such a thing

        • Well that’s If you knew anything about papa Elon you’d know he once had x.com but later changed it PayPal, it’s probably just Elon swinging his jewels that he now “technically” owns x.com again to feed to his ego.

          The dudes straight up cray

  • “Win friends” like it’s some sort of competition…

    • I got more friends than you. So there.

      /s

    • +1

I think it's more like "win over your friends" i.e. convince/influence them.

      • Well that sounds even worse lol

        • Well that sounds even worse lol

You either influencing or being influenced, I know which one I consider worse…

          • @1st-Amendment: This is part of the problem with society.

If you are not the one doing the influencing you are therefore being influenced?

Whatever happens to peaceful co existence? You do you and someone else does themselves. They can do what they want within reason ofcourse.

            • @xoom:

This is part of the problem with society.

Is it? You have an opinion on something, how do you convince or influence others to agree with your opinion?

              • @1st-Amendment: Just saying the world would have less conflicts if people leave each other be. Putting it out there.

Believe what you want to believe. Just don't impose it on others. Bit hey we didn't have two world wars because people clearly couldn't keep their ideology to themselves and have to "influence" others.

                • @xoom:

Just saying the world would have less conflicts if people leave each other be.

                  Would it?

You're not doing a very good job of convincing me, maybe you should read the book…

                  • @1st-Amendment: I said less conflict. Not saying saying there will be none. There will always be conflict.

Even good friends have conflicts due to differing opinions.

How did that book helped you with that?

  • Did it work err my friend is asking

    • +2

You have a friend already, thus this book is not for you.

      • Err i might get it err you know, like for research purposes

  • +9

It's also free on the US site
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CNSRLYNT

  • Another crap book about influence people, winning friends i.e. grave diggers, penny pinchers OZBners. Nope. No need.

I respect comrade Steinbeck and his masterpieces.

    • Send me your Amazon name and I’ll provide you with a gift copy, friend.

Also, paging @jv I would also like to send you a gift copy.

    • Another crap book

This was the first successful book of this genre, it's nearly 100 years old. Every other book of this type is an attempt to copy this one. Dale Carnegie was the original influencer.

      • -1

Then disappear take your Carnage with you! Gees

  • Just buy it from Google book store. Its like $1

    • +11

Please hand in your OzB membership.

      • Nah it costs more than $1 to cancel OzB membership.

But seriously, you're much more likely to read the book on Google's platform since its the default app on Android.

      This guy cryptos.

  • Of Mice and Men was our high school text book some 30 years ago.

  • Some of the techniques in that Carnegie book can seem really fake. It might not translate well across cultures

    • +1

His one about using people's names frequently can sort of backfire. Means you're singling out just one person and not engaging with the group dynamic so much. Probably not a problem for most people here but I read it when I was like 14 so it's definitely hampered my social development thanks to that little tip

  • +1

Call me judgy, but the book’s cover isn’t influencing me to download it, even for free.

    • +1

Lol, that’s probably why you need to read this book to be less judgy and have more friends :p

  • Everyone focusing on Carnegie instead of Steinbeck is disappointing

    • Steinbeck is always free, same as every other long-dead author whose work is in the public domain.

  • +1

Has amazon fixed the issues with needing to be registered to different countries? Noticing that people are putting in multiple links these days for au, us, elsewhere. And last time I logged in was logged in to au but my US books seemed to be there (at least a few of them, I didn't spend time checking properly)

  • Steinbeck is an oddity. His books are written from the perspective of the lower class aka "Struggle Street". Most literature and art is for middle and upper class consumption.

    • I thought Dickens did similar didn't he?

  • +1

Dale died in 1955, so assuming death of the author plus 70 years the book should be in the public domain in 2026. Some people claim it is already public domain. And the publishers will of course keep making derivative works with forewords and stuff to reset the copyright terms on that derivative work. The book is almost 90 years old so it's kind of crazy it's still considered copyrighted at all imo…

  • My wife already calls me a narcissist. I'm going to level up after reading this one. I feel sorry for the people I'm about to win over and then allow me to influence them and tell them how I want them to live. I'm going to be such a winner in life 😁

    • slow claps 👏 … 👏 …👏

  • Got the book, looking for friends now.

  • "Tell me about the rabbits, George " - Lennie

  • jv's favourite book.

  • Is this book outdated for grampz??

To make friends, you just get their snap and snap them like cray cray.

Send at midnight and say "U UP?"

If you got rizz, then u get it gud.

  • in a nutshell be nice and try to give a shit.
