Xiaomi's Second Attempt at Australia

They tried once by selling the Redmi Note 8 Pro through JB, and then disappeared for a few years, seemingly accepting defeat. The Redmi 12 is available now through JB Hi-Fi so they are trying again. In an area where Motorola dominates, do you think they will fail again?

Only advantage they have is 2 OS updates and 4 years security.
My guess: Yes.

Mid-range phones are getting crowded nowadays and Xiaomi Redmi's tend to be pretty boring — both light on features and baked in advertising in their OS. Xiaomi is usually best known for their flagship killer phones, so these budget redmi's have some pretty stiff competition already.

the Mediatek MT6769H Helio G88 (12nm) is kinda old, isn't it? It doesn't even have a 5G modem. Specs are similar to the older (2021) Redmi 10

The Moto G54 for e.g is $238, and has Mediatek Dimensity 7020 (6 nm), 8GB RAM and 50mp with optical image stabilisation. No contest.

    • To be fair stick a Helio G88 in a Samsung and you'd have OzBargain frothing. Glances at Samsung tablets.

  • They also had the Mi Mix 3 5G which i still own and use a second phone its been going since December 2019, decent phone it just got no updates after a while as not enough sold for Xiaomi to bother.

Isn't Motorola owned by Lenovo now?

    • Since 2014.

  • They should sell the other products that they've got their name on over here…

I think they need to make a great push but show people their entire catalogue of devices, not just a single phone in a space already overrun with established manufacturers.

Xiaomi make so much great stuff, and they need the name to be know across multiple facets, not just a single phone model.

I agree, everything Xiaomi I've purchased so far is top shelf: scooter, air compressor, night lights, rice cooker, smart fans, soap dispensers. My guess is they choose not to partner with any of our electrical retailers and aren't chasing market share in our region. So you have to work a bit harder to source their stuff but you won't be disappointed.

A problem for Xiaomi is that the budget and mid range space where they (and BBK) dominate in Asia and the developing world is a much smaller portion of the market here (which is already rather small population wise). Flagships and the tier below (i.e. iPhone 15/15 Pro, S23FE/S23/Ultra, Pixel/Pixel Pro) comprise a much larger portion of the market here and imho convincing the majority of Aussies to go for an unfamiliar brand in those markets will be tough.

In saying that, i can see them grabbing market share from the Samsung A series, Motorola etc if priced competitively. Whether that is enough for them to stay in the market, i'd say maybe.

Wait Xiaomi does 2 OS updates and 4 years security updates? Isn't that for Xiaomi phones and not Redmi or Poco?

  • Hopefully they can but with only these super budget model I doubt it. Also this phone is like 50% more than on AliExpress.

  • They make great phones that last a long time. I'm still using a 7 yr old Redmi 5 Plus that has the original battery.
Unfortunately nobody can pronounce their god awful brand name (inccluding myself) so they will never take off in Oz.

    • Most of the time, "Xi" should be pronounced as "Shi".

So next time, try pronouncing it as "Shao-mi", "Shi Jin Ping", etc.

You won't get the tones right, but at least you won't be obnoxiously ignorant.
