I remember loving this game as a kid, so I bought this re-released version for my own kids for Christmas.

This version has improved miniatures, plastic rather than cardboard furniture and doors, larger playing board and a range of other improvements.

This is a good price according to Camel Camel Camel, although not the cheapest ever.

High Adventure in a World of Magic

In the HeroQuest dungeon crawl board game, heroes work together to complete epic quests, find treasures and defeat the forces of evil.

This semi-cooperative board game has one player taking on the role of Zargon, the Game Master, while 4 mythical heroes—Barbarian, Dwarf, Elf, and Wizard—team up in their quest for adventure in a maze of monsters and eerie dark dungeons. Players can immerse themselves in the fantasy with the stunning artwork, and 65+ detailed miniatures. The game comes with 14 quests, and has limitless replayability because players can also build their own quests and create their own stories. Gather friends together for an exciting night of tabletop gameplay in an epic battle of good and evil.

      The MUSculaaarity!

    • +2

That is the best thing about HeroQuest

  • +7

Don't forget to get 3 so you can experience the dreaded Fortress O' Peril and Gravityland

    • Can you elaborate?

      • +2

The best thing about HeroQuest is looking at the video link just below.

I prefer to think of it as the review.

Not even so much of HeroQuest, but it's just that among all the reviews out there of anything really I like to think of this particular video every now again… and when I do, I think of it as the review.

      • As a face-problem haver I couldn't agree more.

The best thing about this review is the replay button.

    • The best thing about Hero Quest is that there are so many things that are the best

Never played this as a kid how much replayability does it have?

Had Space Crusade as a kid wonder if they will remake that though it already had really good miniatures etc

I think it has a lot of replayability, given the 14 base quests and half a dozen expansion packs and there's nothing stopping you making your own maps and quests.

I can't remember if the magical items and weapons are random or specifically placed in quests, but you could also make the game easier or harder with more or fewer of those.

There is also a HeroQuest app (Android and iOS) that I haven't tried, but apparently it can work as the dungeon master for you, with random quest generation, allowing you to play as a character if you don't have other players, or no-one wants to DM…

And then there are sites like Ye Olde Inn that has additional free resources.

Not to disagree with LambChop, but it depends what you mean by 'replayability'. A narrow view on the word would mean 'can you replay the quests it comes with?' And to that I'd basically say, no. Many of the quests rely on the players not knowing what's coming, and all the named / specific equipment is found in specific locations. You could get some fun out of switching from player to dungeon master and replaying, but you'd need a new group of players.

In terms of depth of play, that's where all the expansions, random question generation, and sites where people post additional quests comes in. However, I personally have found the gameplay very simplistic; there really isn't a lot of strategy to it, so regardless of the quest, you're still going to rely on essentially the same mechanics no matter how many hours you play, and progression just means you roll more dice than before (and so do the enemies). It doesn't really change what you can do.

      • Thanks that's what I meant! Was wondering how randomized the quests were but yeah if they are exactly the same that's a bit of a downer about the simplistic gameplay but maybe a positive if its just with children.

    • the best thing about Space Crusade is also MORE Space Crusade, in highschool we brought in 9 sets and had mega games - the 'fog of war' blips and stuff actually added to it when your kill team has so much more board to explore.

    • I still have both my original Hero Quest and Space Crusade (I remember bringing a box of change I'd saved for ages to cover the $20 I think Space Crusade cost at the time), but hadn't opened them for decades and everything has gone moldy :(

It was awesome in the 80's because there wasn't a lot else like it but times have changed and it is time to move on. For this kind of money I bought Gloomhaven so all this game would do is scratch the nostalgia itch, no thank you.

    • +1

I agree, although gloomhaven plays very differently (more like a puzzle / card management game then a straight forward dungeon crawler). I would probably prefer other things to heroquest, zombicide and conan would both scratch similar itches although both are quite different to this (which is the point).

    • +3

Point taken, but I think HeroQuest will be better suited to my kids (9 and 11).

Maybe we'll try Gloomhaven in a few years.

    • I had this as a kid, but I didn’t really rate the game much. I actually ended up painting all the characters with model paint and so on. But I was into AD&D (computer games and I’m real like with friends occasionally). That is much more expensive and flexible than this.

    • Demeo looks like a lot of fun! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybk8gwbD9IA

  • I had this game as a kid, there is no way my parents would have spent $163 on it though.

    • +3

It was around $80 back in 1991/2 IIRC, that'd translate to more than $163 in today's money.

      • +4

thanks, i must have been good that year

      • +1

spoke to my mum, she remembered the game too but said there is no way she would have spent $80 on a boardgame back then so it must have been cheaper or on sale.

        • +1

It was definitely around that price - it was a considered a premium board game at the time, what with the figurines etc. To put in context, the likes of Monopoly (standard edition) was going for $30-35 in the mid 90s.

          • @zaphy: I have a memory of seeing it in a toy store back in the day, but can't remember the price. I want to say like $40 but this would have been close to its going off the market.

I snagged Ogre Horde expansion for $10 at a discount department store years later, they had a whole shelf full of them lol. That's the next expansion to be announced for this iteration too.

            • @Jdrizzle: My friends and I bought this game in the 90s for between 30 to 40$. That seemed to be the going price when we were buying them.

    • I remember when it was $15 on clearance at toyworld.

  • +3

    Why is it so expensive?
There are a few plastic figurines and a bit of cardboard.

I used to play this over 30 years ago.

Also, I'm tempted to downvote because the box is the wrong form factor! :D

    • -1

Agree, you can get a whole lot of plastic and cardboard from a $2 shop for that price, made in the same place.

When I bought it in the 90s, it was about $50.

  • +1

To improve immersion you can also create your own 3D board if you have the time and patience: HeroQuest 3D Board Build

    • That's so cool!

  • +2

Talisman and HeroQuest were my goto board games growing up!

  • +1

I still have this game from back in the day. Great memories

    • +1

I sold my original for $250 before this version came out. May still have huge value being an original version.

      • +2

The condition of the box is a bit worse for wear.
But I wouldn't consider selling it, couple of the old score cards carry a lot of sentimental value.

  • Anyone got a link to the Amazon thread where people post items that have small quantities?

Cannot find it, I spent 15 minutes trying to search for it.

    Thanks.

  • I still have the original and 3 expansions

  • +3

I ordered one from Amazon AU during their prime day sale at 140 aud and they sent me one without any extra packaging. when it was delivered to me it already looked like a badly kept second hand one.

I will suggest anyone interested in this game buy elsewhere.

    • Yeah, disappointingly mine arrived yesterday without any additional packaging.

I'm surprised it is still in good condition. It is a little tacky where I removed the shipping label, but I should be able to clean that up with a little bit of warm water.

But fair warning to anyone who orders.

  • I loved this as a teenager, but have to question whether it is worth that much money for what you get…

  • +1

Only ever played this on the A500. It was so damn hard.

How similar was it to the board version?

  • I remember buying these from clearance section in K-Mart many many years ago (along with Space Crusade), both board games got a lot of running time.
