Should I Buy an Electric Recliner? Yes or No

Hello there folks, we have a manual recliner which is beginning to play up and was thinking of upgrading to an electric one.

But mum says her work (hospital) had thrown them out. I explained, I assume doesn't meet safety spec but maybe still OK 🤷. So, I ask you fine OzBargain folks, those that own an electric recliner. Is it worth it? What's being your experience?

Thanks for reading.

Look on market place and buy a second hand one - they do not keep their value at all.

My father's was six months old when he passed away. Paid $5,000 and ended up giving it to a relative rather than accept $300 for it.

This guy knows whats up. Targeting rich suburbs where the wife fills her time by redecorating every 6 months is great. Spend a little more for second hand quality ones. Got myself a set of black leather electric recliners this way, two years without skipping a beat & counting.

Had to re-read it. Should've gone to Specsavers.

  • Absolutely no reason to unless you need to drain an account or you have a disability

    What's your living room setup?
If the back of the recliner isn't against a wall then the cord will be a nuisance.
Unless it's a battery one, in which case charging the battery will be a nuisance.

  • I honestly sometimes ponder whether I should swap the Herman Miller Sayl chair that I have in my home office for a La-Z-Boy recliner. Seems like it would be more comfortable and while not ergonomic I usually default to some weird unergonomic position in my Sayl chair anyway. Plus I could put another monitor above my dual monitor setup, angled downwards, for a sweet gaming setup.

Yes, they are the best. I even have one that lifts you into a standing position, but it takes too long, so i just use it normal

    No

    • Did you mean to say No ?

  • My electric recliner is great, I have health issues with my legs and it makes them feel much better when they are elevated

Once you reach a certain age it seems you should get one. One with a remote would be good, leaning to the side and holding the button isn't so much fun.

  • Just more to go wrong, especially if it’s got a battery or a remote or even worse - an app.

Once a gentlemen reaches a certain age (anything past 30) the satisfied noises coming from stretching out on a chair will tell you all you need to know. Mines from the classic dead pensioner gumtree advert. Probably cost 3k plus when new, mine for 300. It's very comfortable, has a cable remote for independent back and leg adjustment, and will even happily lift you into a standing position if you're too drunk to get out properly.

Marvellous bits of kit. You do need some space behind them to allow for the full recline.

You do you though, I'd replace mine if it broke.

  • Save the greenies
    use a yoga mat

  • I have an electric one but it doesn't go so far as helping you stand up. The best pro I've found over a manual one is I can set the incline wherever I want and the chair will hold that position.
My only experience with mechanical ones are from the 90s where the only positions are down, up and anything in between if your core is strong enough
