As bright as those cheap $5 eBay torches advertise that they are.

    • +2

To be fair, Sorfirn torches are in the tier above in terms of Chinese Lumens.

      • -1

I own a fair few Sofirn torches. Not this one but the specs are very impressive. Not sure what the use case for this would be though, 16k lumens is ridiculous and 1800 lumens for 10 hours is too much.

        • +1

well you're wrong, this actually measured 17k lumens @30 seconds
          https://zeroair.org/2022/12/16/sofirn-q8-plus-flashlight-rev…

it won't look like 16k lumens because brightness perception is non linear, eg 20k lumens won't look twice as bright as 10k lumens

and also the 1800 lumens for 10 hours is FL1 standard meaning as long as the output is above 10% of the initial turn on, it counts

          • +1

@Bacons: Yeah, I misread the comment. This torch would live up to cheap ebay torch promises albeit for 30 seconds. After 3 minutes it's pretty much cooked and down to 2000 lumens. Great review here

            • +1

@Punkboy: oh yep Tim's one of our own!

            • +1

              @Punkboy: Thanks!

The Q8 Plus managed to maintain 16k lumens by 30 seconds.

It's a pretty good budget flooder. The tripod hole and 1,000 lm for 5 hours is nice.

I wish Sofirn would include button top 21700 cells. They've been including flat top 21700 cells and a few people have reported issues with it not making contact properly. Some solder blobs could be added, or 21mm PCB adapters from Convoy. The flat top cells in my Q8 Plus are working ok.

The sustained output isn't going to be super high unless you increase the thermal limit (advanced UI) and have a fan for active cooling.

          • +1

@Bacons: I found it to be closer to 1,000 lumens for 5 hours on Step 5.

            • +1

@Tim Mc: yeah, it's likely that their testing was with an uncalibrated temp sensor and potentially uncooled, so it likely stabilised at a lower output maybe 500-600 or so to reach the 10 hour mark

              edit:

actually the amazon description is very misleading because it says "Q8plus can sustain 1800 lumens for 10 hours" but doesn't specify FL1 anywhere I can find. Not good

        • you believe that everyone else has the same "use case" as you?

    • +3

This torch is insanely bright and totally nuclear shits all over $5-$40 eBay torches.

      • +1

I took it out for a walk in the park. It attracted a lot of attention from both people and flying bugs. Too heavy for regular use. Prefer the SP36 for daily use.

  • I was considering 'Ryobi 18V ONE+ Tripod Worklight' at $199 (+batteries) for camping: to help set up at night or cook etc. But this light paired with a tripod like https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/817117 makes sense too, for a lot less $$$ and smaller size. Thoughts?

    • I have the pro version and use it for camping lighting, so convenient and you can also run them on battery pack at the same time if charges low. It's also great for taking photos at night of items to sell on Facebook marketplace, Shine it at the ceiling and turns room into day light for photos.

      • Do you use a tripod? I like this particular light because it has threads to screw into a tripod mount

        • No. I use what ever is around, I just sit it on a chair,. Box or something.

I'd recommend a lantern for around camp

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/sofirn-blf-lt1

Still need a selection of torches and headtorches but a good lantern is great around camp.

    • I have the Ryobi folding work light and that's been really handy for camping and outdoor cooking, blus can be used with battery or extension lead.

This torch plus a tripod will give you great light but not as diffused as a lantern or the worklight, so you'll have harsher shadows to deal with which can be a pain.

    • I ordered an Amazon Basics tripod recently after my 10+ year-old tripod broke. I'm not sure about the ball clamp of the K&F. It might move around a bit.

SmallRig clamps have been pretty handy. I used an arm with a clamp at one end and a 1/4" thread at the other end to mount a Sofirn Q8 Plus while taking beamshot photos.

There might be some aftermarket handles with a tripod thread that could fit the Q8 Plus.

IMO a torch is not great for an overall camping light. It will throttle to less light output than the Ryobi worklight, and not run for as long. It will also be much more focused, so need to be set up further away. It will be more of a point source, so create a lot of glare.

For camping, my favourite light by far is a cheap LED on a fishing pole style one I bought from eBay for $30. It gets the light up super high (around 5m) and gives a really nice overhead light. They use 12V, and I run mine from a power bank most of the time using a USB-C to 12V DC converter cable. But any 12V source is fine.

Here is a dual LED panel one, with an LED dimmer remote, on sale for $32. ( Mine is not exactly the same, but similar).
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364590448277

Keep in mind the 800W rating is a complete lie (and that one does not come with the case in the pic). The LED panels are about 10 or 15W. So the twin panel is similar light output to that Ryobi worklight.

Here is a single panel tripod style one.
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/386251245106

There are heaps of these, so not sure what one is the best deal.

I have run it from a USB-C to accessories socket plugged into a power bank. For 1a 5V capable power bank, it will output 15V (similar to a running car) but my LED does not seem to mind (despite no voltage regulation I can see), and is a bit brighter at 15V.
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Laiaouay-Cigarettes-Lighter-Socket…

I mostly run mine from a 20W, 30,000mAh Baseus power bank. They are crazy cheap right now (for the next 7 hours it seems) and are just $32 with the ebay sale codes This one only does 12V, 1.5A, which is 18W. My LED is a single panel around 15W, so no issues there. It will run for about 5.5 hours on this power bank.
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/313728765341

Also, these power banks make great DIY camping lights. You can buy a million different USB LED options on eBay and Amazon, with different swivel heads etc. Then just plug them into the power bank.

      • Thanks for the info, very useful! Didn't know LED on a fishing pole was a thing

        • Yeah either did I, until I happened to see one on eBay when looking for something else.

Handily, a cheap fishing rod bag (or tripod bag) works well for storage.

  • I own the Q8 BLF, the Q8 pro and this Q8 Plus as well as several other lumintop, sofirn and blf torches… I might have a problem, but its certainly not a lack of light.

The Q8 Plus is by far the nicest and brightest torch i own, its a hefty coke can size so not an EDC, but perfect for camping, power outages, blinding intruders and although not tested might put out a enough heat to start cooking an egg in a pinch at full output??

Batteries it comes with are great, but if you choose to swap with other cells do your research on quality high discharge cells.

    • Hey how hot does it get on turbo? Does it quickly get to the point you can't hold the torch?

      • It will thermal throttle itself and lower the brightness (limit values configurable). The tube of the torch where you'd typically hold it stays cool. But I wouldn't touch the front of the torch for a bit.

    • How would you rate this if shine through the light in waist height water? Are you able to see the bottom of the water clearly? I am going crabbing soon and in need an extremely bright torch

      • Not a use case I've considered or tested, its a good spread out flood light, if anything has the brightness for it then probably this.

      • Would be bright enough. The water might help with managing the heat too. Do you go crabbing in day time or night time?

        • Night time when there is no light, pitch black. Don't think this can go into the water though can it?

          • @Aerith-Waifu: Its rated IPX8, which claims continuous immersion in 1m or more. Keep the oring seals in good condition and rinse after salt water. Of course this would all be at your own risk. I've had no issue in heavy rain, but ive never gone swimming with it.

            • @snuffypot11: Salt water built up is a bit of a worry. I might give this a goal and worst comes to worst I will return if not good . Thanks for the input

              • @Aerith-Waifu: I've used Sofirns in water before, not for diving though. If in salt water would recommend rinsing in fresh water afterwards.

              • @Aerith-Waifu: IMO get one of the Sofirn dive lights. The SD01 Pro is about the same price from Sofirnlight.com. It's 18650, so runtime is not as good. But it is meant for underwater usage.

                https://www.sofirnlight.com/collections/diving-flashlight

Wurkkos is also good, and the lights come from the same factory as Sofirn.

They have a dive light that is very similar to the Q8 Plus (vasically a dive version of the same light). The Wurkkos DL06. But it is about $25 more expensive. It might be cheaper elsewhere though.

                https://wurkkos.com/products/wurkkos-dl06-rechargeable-power…

They also have other dive lights.

                https://wurkkos.com/collections/underwater-torch

Keep in mind that all these torches can't output the full rating for more than a few minutes. Most of them (the Q8 Plus included) end up close to 2000 lumen at best in terms of sustained output.

Underwater will keep the torch cooler, so it will sustain a higher output. But for example, the Wurkkos DL61 is 7000 lumens, but will probably sustain around the same brightness longer term as the DL06, for half the cost. But check actual reviews.

  • I have the non-Plus.

Does this start fires faster or?

  • Ah, the days pre-Covid when the Q8 went for $50-60 on special.

  • fyi… as an owner of this torch, it is quite chunky and heavy and not ideal to hold for extended period of use time. charge time also takes 2 hours+ if you run the battery flat.

Other than that, the build quality is solid, battery life is excellent and at full power, its blindingly bright!!
