Strange PayPal Transactions in Bank Account - Not Showing on PayPal Itself

This morning I went to check my bank account and noticed numerous PayPal transactions attempted and reversed for a Coles online purchase of $474.55.

My bank account balance has remained untouched as the transactions were immediately reversed by PayPal. These transactions do not appear in my PayPal account at all.

I received an email last night from PayPal that a card (not mine) was "removed from your PayPal account", and that auto login had been turned on on a device that I didn't recognise. I immediately logged on to PayPal and logged out of all devices and removed all auto logins for all devices.

I guess my question is who do I go to about this? My bank? PayPal? Coles? Anyone been in a similar situation? Thanks!

    sounds like typical Paypal.
I have given up on them!

    • Curious how paypal works?

      • no further need to know, once they split from ebay I lost $75 with them and got threatened by a criminal debt collector.
        Glad to use Afterpay since!

Hey thats new. Looks like you can add paypal as a payment source in google wallet. Guessing that's whats happened to you

I'd be trying to figure out how they got those details. Go to haveibeenpwned and see if you're details are out there. It's important to figure out if it's just the password, or if your local devices have been breached.

You can contact your bank for more info, but if you haven't lost money there's not much to be done.

I had a similar issue, minus the auto reversing transactions.

I had an email notification saying that autologin has been turned on on a device which is not mine. I logged in to my Paypal account and discovered someone had moved money from my bank account into my Paypal balance. I had been hacked somehow, but not sure how. So I changed my Paypal password hoping that would stop the hacker. A few days later, I noticed there was a transaction from my Paypal balance to a card that was not mine and had been added to my account without any notification. I caught it while the transaction was "pending" and contacted Paypal to reverse the transaction. So changing my password didn't work. I changed my password again and turned on 2FA as suggested by the Paypal rep. That seemed to have stopped it.

      and turned on 2FA

You've been using PayPal without 2FA all this time?

Yep. Didn't realise it was common knowledge.

  • Thanks for the heads up. I've just enabled 2FA on my paypal.

  • Who is your email provider?

    • Apple

At least that eliminates local ISPs offshore support call centres access to your details.
