If you want to call this out for not being a bargain because it's still 50-freaking-dollars for a movie, that's fair!

But I've had it on my shopping list since release and it's the cheapest I've seen it on our side of the world. Also I already bought the steelbook at a ridiculous price because I'm a sucker for a little FOMO, and this is cheap in comparison lol.

You can get a little extra mileage from this deal if you use the buy two save 11% link.

I'd recommend In Bruges, Coraline, or Carrie.

Ayo no shaming in collecting the stuffs you liked mate. Although sometimes JB does run the 50% Bluray or Buy one get one for free which might be better deals. But I guess if you can't wait, gotta do what you gotta do.

    • +3

Oh yeah, JB cleaned me out over Black Friday, no doubt :p unfortunately Disney have the lion’s share of distribution these days, and they’ve severely limited our means of picking these up locally :(

      • +3

True. Stocks are quite limited sometimes at local stores. Anw this movie did sort of kickstart the whole Predator franchise (again) after the horrible 2018 "The Predator" so I'd consider this to be somewhat of a memento lol

    • +7

      Prey didn’t get released locally.

      • Ah ha didn't know that. Piqued my interest.

        • +6

Disney has stopped releasing movies on Disc in Australia.

        • It's probably the best predator movie , well thought out story line .

  • Wasn’t this streaming free on Disney?

    • +12

It does indeed stream on Disney.

It wasn’t free, and the AV quality was sub par. Otherwise it was a great watch there as well :)

      • +5

streaming aint 4k i couldnt imagine it streaming a 100+gb movie at 4k - i hope you have a good nbn connection

        • Well I'm on 1000/50 and download 100GB games on Steam in 20 mins so it's definitely doable. Movies run for 90 mins so including buffer that's still slower than Steam download.

          • @Bigboomboom: same but doesnt mean that you wont have problems …
i did 5th element 100gb from my server through plex on sony oled… yeah wasnt good depends on whats decoding what..if i run plex through apple tv box to sony tv no problems.

        • Good if it will be 12Gb. Streaming cuts bitrate so bad that the size reduces as much as quality. But anyway, this movie is full of darkness, not a big deal in this case.
Btw, HDR 4K in original quality available for free download you know where.

          • @Ozzster: high seas have saved me a fortune over lifetime, yet big companies are still rich , so its a win win

            • @botchie: This is the way of ultimate ozbargainer.

      • +3

Worse quality than this? Of course. "Sub par"? Not really.

Disney plus quality is as good as any other streaming service.

It's just not as good as a 1080p blu-ray, and not even close to 4K blu-ray.

Especially on a big screen OLED or a projector, and especially with proper home theatre audio (or even just a $200 Yamaha reciever and some old speakers from the 80s, like I'm using right now 😂).

    • +11

This is asked every blu ray thread

Blu Rays have uncompressed audio and video, the size on disc is probably over 60gb, streaming probably 12gb

For people with high end Oled tvs and surround sound systems the difference is big

      • +5

normally close to 100gb on average @ 4k

        • +2

Prey is 66GB on disc and 6GB on streaming, as per YouTube below

          • @Pricebeat: I watched this before purchasing and it certainly influenced my decision. Actually night and day between streaming and disk.

            • -2

@Jake T: You watched the movie first and then still bought it?
I personally found the movie a bit sub-par.

              • @Tiggrrrrr: I meant I watched the attached YouTube clip comparing the stream to the disk. But yes, I also watched the film twice before buying. I love it.

          • -1

            @Pricebeat: and…..

      • +4

Not uncompressed, just compressed a lot less than streaming.

        • +6

If we get to lossless movies in the next couple of decades my retirement is just going to be a VR headset and whatever minimal level of exercise is required to not die.

    • +7

I mean you don't own the movie anyway as soon as you Disney Plus subs expired without renewal. Same with Gamepass and PS Plus - you don't own jack with their "free games".

  • +2

There’s a heap of good titles in the 11% off deal, surprising amount of Criterion discounted too.

  • +2

I found this a pretty poor film with little of the horror tension found in the first and second Predator films. I certainly wouldn't want to drop a cool 50 to watch it.

    • +14

Really? I thought this was easily one of the best Predator films to date. Moved away from the horror tension and more into the action and cool characters which was a plus in my books. After the original movie, the franchise just slid further and further downhill culminating in the terrible Alien vs Predator movies. Then they released the awesome Predators movie which was easily the best movie after the original. When Prey came out I was apprehensive but really enjoyed it and have watched it a few times now. Easily the 3rd best film in the franchise imo.

      • +2

Totally agree with Predators and Prey being at the top! I thought that Predators was the best Predator movie after a string of mediocre (sometimes terrible) ones. Having watched Prey, I now rank it above Predators. The change of setting to 1800s USA and the care taken to establish the core characters and their culture in the first half of the movie was excellent. I thought the ending was a bit of a let-down but a great movie overall. And I thought the soundtrack was good too.

        • +1

A string of them? So Predator is mediocre?

(Not counting AVP but requiem is a guilty pleasure of mine as well…)

          • @jonathonsunshine: Sorry, I should have clarified that the original Predator was excellent while some of the ones following it were mediocre.

      • +1

The idea of the Predator unable to kill a human without his mask pretty much ruins all his superpowers downsizing him to just another human.

        • +1

He'd been shot point blank in the back of the head as well. That would tickle at least..

          • +1

@jonathonsunshine: What again points out on his inability to protect himself from humans even with the most basic guns and ruins his superpowers.

            • @Ozzster: Did you watch it with no sound or something. She explains exactly what's happening in that scene?

If I was hunting a bear and passed a kitten, I wouldn't expect the kitten to suddenly maul me. (Sorry, replied to myself haha)

    • +5

This is an objectively bad take.

      • -2

Ahh yes, the objectivity involved in one's regard of art and entertainment. What a tiresome meme sentence you trundled out. Objectively, claiming objectivity in such things makes you untrustworthy on such matters as you implicitly disallow differing opinions on subjective matters.

    • Same…it didn't grab me in the same way as the other Predators did. $50 too much, maybe if it was a steelbook, I would pay the $50, will wait for Boxing Day, maybe it will drop to $25-$30, will consider it then.

  • +5

$72 for the 4k, Disney definitely done us in locally.

    • -1

Good spot, this deal title needs to be updated

      • -1

Showing $58.52 for the 4K for me, the link in the deal is for the blu ray

    • +2

Amazon have a rubbish way of listing these. But I’ve ordered ‘bluray’s a dozen times, and anytime it’s had 4K in the thumbnail, the 4K has always arrived. So the price should still be accurate.

      • I agree but in this case i think you might be wrong

        Different listing for 4K here
        https://www.amazon.com.au/Prey-Ultra-Blu-ray-Region-Free/dp/…

        • +1

That’s the UK import rather than the US. May be slight difference, but mostly just double listed to confuse us all lol

          • @Jake T: One of the reviews on OP's link has a photo and it just says Blu-Ray

            • +1

@toastface: That's because Amazon do the reviews by the movie for all formats linked, not only the selected format. This is the 4K - converting Amazon ASIN to UPC translates to 786936900095, which is the 4K US version.

Ah, I See You're a Man of Culture As Well.jpg

Im a huge fan of the predator movie universe and ive been eyeing for that prey steelbook as well.

Do you mind sharing where you got the steelbook?

I have preordered at hmv uk at first and using myus shipping but found out that amazon.de is offering preorders and shipping to AU and cheaper.

    • +2

I can’t remember if I ended up ordering from Denmark or UK in the end. Probably UK because it’s no longer pre-order, it’s on its way!

I actually grabbed two copies to save postage and thought I friend would like to split it with me, but alas, he did not. If you live in/near Brisbane let me know if you’d like to share!

      • +1

        pm’d you

  • +1

for a minute I thought this was a remastered 4k version of the game prey lol ok so its the movie.

  • +1

    Good audio

  • +4

Excellent movie but this is the most expensive disc I've ever seen for a single film, especially when it isn't Criterion or limited edition or anything.

    • Yeah in this case, I just watched it on Disney plus. Subtly worse image and quality, but… eh.

    • Agree, and this was even a straight to streaming movie

    • 100%, hardly a deal

    • Drive would like a word. Hard to get the collector’s edition of that one for less than $300 these days 😬

      • +1

Yeah, but I assume it is out of print and a collector's item now.

This seems to be standard issue Blu-ray that's only just come out and is only a few years old to begin with.

        • True. Drive was $100 when it was readily available. And Lawrence of Arabia is still in print and sells out for $120. It’s nuts. But they certainly know there are collectors!

  • +5

    Bruges is a shithole

    • -1

It certainly looks and smells pretty average in the outlying areas. But if you stay in the centre it’s THE shit :p

      • Are the swans still there?

        • I dunno, it's been a while. The dog was still in the window though.

Also just realised this was a quote and not a judgment and I feel dumb XD

    • +2

Ray, we only just got off the f'ing train! Could we reserve judgement on Bruges until we've seen the f'ing place?

      • I know it’s gonna be a shithole

    • Bruges is not a shithole Colin

      • +1

        Bruges IS a shithole

  • +1

Best Predator movie in 30 years at least.

    • +1

I like them all and I think they all standup well on their own because they're all so different.

One set in the jungle, one set in the city as a police procedural, one set on another planet, one set in the suburbs, one set in the past…

      • +1

Oh definitely - I'm a fan of all but most get a single watch or little replay value for years.

Was genuinely surprised when this came out, rewatched it within a few days and spread the word to others too.

  • +1

Got mine from FraMeSToR might have to give it a watch.

    • Tigole/D0ct0rLew

      • Tigole - haven’t seen that name since RarBG shut down

    • I’m all for saying ‘(profanity) you’ Disney, so this is another option :p

  • Physical copy of Loki season 1 from the US as well if anyone is interested:

Deal of the day: Loki: The Complete First Season

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CG6J62WY?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp…

  • Prices like these will be the Norm for 4K, Jb even excluded NEW titles from their last sale, never seen them do that before.
Australians are missing out on new titles, Jbhifi's 4K discs inventory is usually about 710 discs, now it's 655.
Amazon au stock says US or UK, they are not sourced locally.

Avatar and Avatar the Way of water is no longer on Jb's website.

Titles like Titanic 4k, The Abyss 4k, Aliens 4K, True lies 4K, Point Break 4K and Conan the Barbarian 4k (1982) are not being released in Australia.
Sanity has Titanic 4k listed at $97 so I guess that including import costs.

Disney wants us to use their streaming services and have cut the supply of Disc's to us Aussies.
For someone who prefers to watch movies on disc, I am going to be paying about $60+ per title in future because I can't buy them locally.
It means, I'll buy less discs, which means places like JBhifi will say we are buying less disc's therefore we will stop stocking them. It's a viscous cycle.

    • +1

I mostly agree with you for sure. I hate the choices being taken away and them blaming consumers for the results.

In potential good news, I hear Pinnacle may be taking over some distribution, so some films currently under the Disney umbrella could make it to our shores.

And the only thing I don’t agree with is JB’s policy. They’ve often excluded big new releases from their sales, on films they know will sell big anyway.

      • I hope that's the case.

    • +2

New releases are occasionally removed from sales. When Avatar: Way of the water came it wasn't included in the sale at the time. As a 3d enjoyer I made sure to grab it whilst I could

Current sale restrictions Is just Barbenheimer if I'm not mistaken

    • Seems like price inflation. I never paid 50 bux for a movie even when DVDs and blu rays first came out.

  • +3

Learnt my lesson buying Blu-rays back in the day….they were awesome quality, then 4K came out and they became redundant, these will be good until another format supersedes it and you realize you have $10,000 of discs you can stream in better 8K super HDR quality for $19.95 a month.

    • +2

You’re quite possibly right. I personally don’t regret any DVD or Bluray purchases I’ve made. And the more streaming takes over the more expensive it’ll become and the more channels there’ll be.

Quality may one day become superior via stream. But $19.95 won’t get you very far when it happens. And you’ll own nothing you’ve paid for.

    • +1

I don't think rooms are big enough to accommodate bigger than a 4k tv benefit. If you go 8k the screen size would have to go larger to accommodate.
I think you can feel safe knowing 4k will do you fine for quite some time

    • Blu-ray isn't redundant. Still better than streaming. Scratch resistant unlike DVD, looks great on modern 4k displays if you have a decent player with a good upscaler. Still 100% viable.

  • I'm just going through the comments.. I had no idea this was related to the predator movies. Does it rate as good as OG with Arnie..

    • +1

It generally rates just as well, yeah! It was an exceptional prequel, perfectly paced.

      • Good to know… I wonder why they didn't release locally.

        • That's been discussed in the comments too. Basically Disney owns it and Disney is bad. Very bad.

    • Great film.
