Not a black Friday deal I don't think, but I've been on the hunt for some replacement lights for our kitchen and this is the cheapest I've seek the Akari lights since the BF deal last year, working out at $74.75ea

Yeah, they're stupid expensive but after my seemingly reliable ebay zigbee CCT lights all died in 2 years, and the RGBCCT replacement I tried didn't go nearly low enough when dimmed I figured stuff it, I'll just spend the extra and put these in.

Sold by Powermove Distribution Pty Ltd (thanks @kampret), fulfilled by Amazon (2 days for me in Sydney).
I did look up Powermove Distro before I ordered too and they seem to be a legit business. Sell the 4pk on their site directly too but it's not as cheap.

    • Not sure how returns work. I've needed to do this before on an Amazon AU purchase.

Thanks mate, good point, original post updated.

That's crazy cheap. You sure it's the same product?

      • -7

No, it was 6 x Philips Hue White Ambience GU10 Bluetooth Downlight

        $197.94 delivered

        • +8

Well if it's not even the same kind of product (globe only vs complete fitting and power supply) why would you think it's a relevant piece of information?

          • -3

            @Srey:

            globe only

It's 240v… connects directly to power. Transformers are built into globe.

            • +2

@jv: Still has to go into a fitting though right? Or do you just have your gu10 globe hanging through a hole in the ceiling from some wires you twisted onto the terminals?

              • -4

                @Srey:

Still has to go into a fitting though right?

Replaced my halogens in the same fitting… Same size.

                • +10

@jv: Congratulations, still a totally different product that's incompatible and not at all relevant to someone looking for 90mm downlights.

Sounds like your GU10 globes were too expensive because you could have got a 12 pack of candles from Kmart for $7

Both downlights, both compatible with the Hue app.

@jv: No, one is a replacement globe for an existing housing, one is a full lamp.

One does adjustable temp white as well as full colour, one only does white range.

They're not interchangable and you should stop pretending they are.

You can easily switch them around.

                        Same hole diameter.

@jv: Do you physically get off on posting misinformation or is it just a hobby?

If I bought the GU10 globes you're suggesting I'd be left holding a globe only with a two pin connection, looking at a hole in the ceiling and a GPO socket in the roof thinking "damn, that JV really is dumb, there's no way this can do the same job with the setup I have. Now I have to go out and find 90mm GU10 housings that have standard AC plugs, and spend more on those as well."
You GU10 globes only are alone not a replacement for these lights.

                          Same hole diameter.

This is also partially correct at best. GU10 fixtures can be found in a range of sizes from at least as small as 55mm up to 120mm. There is zero guarantee that these lights would be compatible with the cutout, let alone the wiring setup in the ceiling, so like boretentsu said you could be up for having an electrician in to rewire all the fittings.

But keep talking shit if it makes you happy mate.

Cool. Seeing as they're the same thing, I'll pay an electrician a $1000+ bucks to change all the house fittings from 90mm downlight to GU10S plus ceiling plaster repair.

Wait, yours are only white whereas these are full spectrum colours. No deal!

      • It’s not, his wouldn’t be colour

id pay the extra $20 from JB to get the fact its local and if i have any issues i have a trusted place to take it back to etc. Also would be cheaper if you stack with 15% off gift cards as well.

Yeah this is a good option too, I had amazon credit to burn and didn't feel like battling the stores anytime near BF haha.

FWIW with warranty, I've only ever had one failure with a Hue light (a strip) and even though it was direct from Amazon they didn't want to have anything to do with the warranty since it was over 12 months old (less than 2 years).

I reached out to Philips Aus directly and they handled it quickly and easily, just needed to show proof of purchase with my Amazon receipt.

  • I had anticipated finding a good bargain for Hue stuff on Black Friday, but the price of $74.75 exceeds my budget for a downlight.

Has anyone had any firsthand experience with this product: https://www.lectory.com.au/p/Lighting/LED-Indoor-Lighting/LE… ?

    • +1

Yes. Tldr they are not as good or as reliable. I am waiting for a better deal to replace them (<$50 per garnea).

The new ones have no default transition effect (I. E. Turns on and off like turning on a dumb light). The dimming overall is much clunkier, you would need to spend time programming good automations or customising firmware (wouldn't even know how).

The colour spectrum is also not the same (less granularity) so you cannot mix and match in the same room. They've released new revisions over time which don't match colours of past products so you can't reliably scale by purchasing a few first.

A few have failed already less than 2 years in. One randomly turns on in the middle of the night which is always fun. They at least programmed power reset to a low luminance so you don't get a full 800 lumens suddenly in the middle of the night.

      • Thank you for responding. It seems they have released an updated version. Did you own the previous version or the new one that includes Apple Homekit integration?

        • +2

I have similar experiences with the other third party lights I've had, not the Nue ones.

I've got 3 Mercator Ikuu RGBCCT ones running in less used spots at the moment and they seem to behave the same as what I've read of the Nue ones:
          - no transition support so they just jump from one colour/state to the next, which in practice proved to be really off putting
          - the CCT range doesn't get anywhere near as dim as the hue globes (1% illumination seems to be about 25% on the hue globes) so I had to switch to RGB mode to try and get lower outputs for dim scenes.
          - they get stuck in either CCT or RGB mode when switching between scenes, and you need to manually adjust the light mode through the hue app, this was a real pain.

I also ran some CCT only lights from URneed lighting on ebay (also have a website) and although they performed much better, every one of the 4 has died in less than 2.5 years, and according to the seller that's not unusual.

I bought one of their new RGBCCT lights to replace it, and it integrates better than the mercator ones but it also has the issue of not getting nearly dim enough, and the colour spectrum has very weird tints compared to the other hue lights in the place so it was difficult to get consistent lighting.

I really didn't want to spend up on the philips lights either as I think they're way overpriced, but I was pretty sick of the inconveniences of the other lights, and didn't want to spend half as much just to have to replace them every 2 years anyway.

If you do want to try budget though, the URneeds light does behave the best of what I've tried, and maybe the newer RGB ones would last a bit longer too?
They're noticably cheaper at least too:
          https://urneeds.com.au/10w-90mm-smart-zigbee-rgb-cw-led-down…

          • +1

@Srey: As expensive as philips are, there are no reliable alternatives. I bought the nues as an experiment and didn't go all in. I'm glad I "invested" into philips from reliable vendors.

            • +1

@boretentsu: Yeah ditto. I've done pretty well picking up typical e27 globes and the lightstrips we run either on sale or second hand, and with the exception of the lightstrips being a bit fragile at the solder joints they've all been really reliable and easy to use.

I was hoping that third party zigbee products would be good enough to sub in for the downlights but my experience has been the same as yours: the Hue gear is just more reliable and painless. I don't mind a bit of futzing here and there with my tech in general, but for something like lights I just want them to work without any hassles, close to 100% of the time.

        • +1

Not sure, I use it with HA via sonoff/zigbee2mqtt. I dont remember seeing home kit integration being advertised which could mean at least a third revision. As mentioned above, you cannot reliably expect backwards compatibility like you might with philips.

      • In addition to my last question (can't edit my comment because it has already been replied to), are you using Hue Bridge with Nue downlights or something else?

        • +1

Not sure if this is directed at me, but all the ones I've tried have been with a hue bridge and accessories.

      • A deal on the Garnea has just been posted -
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/817170

      • +1

Just to hammer the point home, I chucked these nues into a spare room and built automations to alternate configurations on different zigbee button presses. The lights cannot keep up and frequently just end up in an unpredictable jumble of on/off states. I do the same thing with philips and it works flawlessly. The analogy would be like seeing a really good choreographed dance VS a drunk person comically crashing through.

The philips must have some form of on-device memory to store and process a queue of instructions as they come in.

    • You could also try utilising your existing downlights by putting in one of these:

      https://www.lectory.com.au/category/home-automation-system/n…

It turned my four dumb downlights in the kitchen into Hue-compatible Alexa-responding lights.

As much as I'd like to put some nice coloured downlights in, it seemed like an awful waste to pull out the downlights that were only a couple of years old (having replaced the original downlights that were regularly dying, but before the Akaris were available). For the price of one of the switches and a sparky to swap it over, I got all of the functionality (bar the colour, of course). As a bonus I could also dim the lights, as the original wall switch was just an on-off.

      • I considered this but went down the replacement route. There is additional benefit in being able to granularise light configurations instead of all on or all off.

It would be good to get an update on how you go with the wall switch over time. The nue lights are not as good and I heard of these wall switches failing over time and becoming essentially dumb switches again.

        • +1

It has been in for over a year and so far so good, for what that's worth.

The other reason I went that route is all the existing downlights have a silver surround, and having that mismatch with replacement Akaris - they are all visible in the open plan area - would be visually annoying.

Just put a few of these in. All working well!
