20% off Yearly Subscription to The Sizzle Technology Newsletter $48 (Was $60) @ The Sizzle

1170
BLACKCYBER23

It's Black Friday/Cyber Monday, so that means a sizzling deal on The Sizzle - Australia's best technology newsletter.

Skip the free trial and go straight to a paid subscription using the code BLACKCYBER23 to save 20%! That's a full year for just $48.

If you're wondering what The Sizzle is all about, here's some comments from the last time I ran this promo on OzBargain back in June:

ferrisb: "Signed up to a free trial on one of The Sizzle's previous ozb promotions. Figured I'd 95% cancel before renewal time, but ended up loving it. $60 well spent. Even better spent at $48. Bite size news, written in a great style (I really enjoy the swearing and passion) and enough contextual info so a non IT nerd can understand all the tech news. Wholeheartedly encourage everyone even remotely interested in tech news to check it out. It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up ;)"

Wheat: "Have been a happy subscriber for a couple of years now. Was originally one of these deals that got me over the line and haven't regretted it. One of the few emails make sure to read when it hits the inbox during the week. The Slack group and forum is just the icing on top."

DealhunterMelbourne: "I just renewed my subscription at the full $60 price, without using the voucher, because I love this daily bite sized delivery of sweary, cynical joy - the world of technology seen through Anthony's uniquely Australian lens. Could not love it more. I'd rather give up 6 packets of Magnums, or 12 on half price special at Coles, than give up The Siz."

You know it's good when the OzBargain cheapskates pay full price for it! Now's your chance to get it at 20% off.

Visit https://thesizzle.com.au/payme & use the code BLACKCYBER23 - coupon expires 11:59PM Melbourne time on the 27th of November, 2023.

Feel free to ask any questions in this post - I will be monitoring it regularly!

FAQ:

  • Is there a free trial? Indeed - just visit https://thesizzle.com.au and you can sign up for a 30-day trial.

    Good tech newsletter, great value!

    • +1

      I agree :)

That was one my most successful promotions ever! 332 people gave me their COVID vax proof and 60 ended up paying. Over 15% conversion rate. All the people that were salty about COVID or the vaccine or whatever ended up giving me more attention than I could ever have hoped for - so bitch and moan some more, it's great for me!

The fact that you are still proud.of this years later, knowing what we know now…

      • -2

Well I just hope that all you clowns who upvoted are still "doing the right thing" and getting your booster shots. Just remember, it wasn't Covid that ruined the economy, it was your compliance.

    • So MSM tech news with a little salty language

      • +1

Dunno about MSM tech news, but yes, tech news (Aussie, usually a bit nerdier than mainstream media) and salty.

  • I endorse The Sizzle!

    • Thanks for subscribing mate!

Still not a deal in my eyes

    • +2

Damn, I can't really go any lower without practically giving it away. You might prefer a 90-day free trial instead perhaps? That's $0/m - https://thesizzle.com.au/acms

      • -8

        Nope

        • +24

Free isn't a deal now? Tough crowd.

          • @decryption: Maybe they want the Sizzle Platinum subscription that comes with a free foot rub on Fridays and is read out over the phone by your butler?

      • Thanks, signed up. if its good then il defo subscribe

        • +2

Awesome! Hope you enjoy the trial.

      • 3 months free + 12 months @ $60 = $4/month, 12 months @ $48 = $4/month, what’s the difference?

        • Commitment

        • +1

You don't need to spend any money to see if you like the newsletter or not. I mean, yes, you can cancel immediately and get an instant pro-rated refund, but for a lot of people handing over a credit card number is big deal, they're scared of forgetting and then being charged money, or don't believe me when I say getting a refund and cancelling is easy. The media/news industry has scarred people with their dark patten bullshit and I pay the price.

  • +1

That’s a shit hot deal…. The deal section alone is 👌👌

    • +1

Paid subs getting a nice bonus bargain email this evening, writing it up now, will send it after dinner :)

      • How good.

      • +1

Just signed up, looking forward to receiving my first email!

        • Beautiful! Should be done in an hour or so.

  • I've been a subscriber for a few years now, I don't get a chance to read all of the emails, but I almost always do a quick glance of the headlines.

Are there any other similarly good email news subscriptions people use for other like minded topics?

    • Garbage Day is the only other email newsletter I pay for, it's that good.

      https://www.garbageday.email/

      • +1

Seconding this, Garbage Day is a great 2-3 times a week newsletter that I always read and have paid for across a few years. Today in Tabs is also a good us-news centric daily (haven’t pulled the trigger on paying for it at this point but it’s worth taking a look at).

Of course, for any other commenter reading through, I’d also highly recommend giving the Sizzle a shot. As someone who is across a lot of tech news for my job, i find it to be a really good, brief summary of what’s going on in the day, and it often picks up on things that i would have missed otherwise. And the bargain summaries help cut down on a lot ozbargaining time! Will happily pay for another year when renewal time comes around!

        • Just signed up for Today in Tabs - looks interesting!

  • The only thing I like more than The Sizzle is the testimonials that Anthony cites ;)

    • +2

People listen when someone smart, handsome and funny talks!

  • Favourite newsletter in my inbox. Thanks for your daily hard work putting it together!

    • Thank you :)

  • -1

I heartily endorse this product and/or service.

    • I endorse this endorsement.

  • Highly recommended - for me, this fills the space that Delimiter vacated when it stopped publishing in 2018. Great pithy overview of tech news delivered in an engaging way

    • RIP Delimiter. I used to write for Renai back in the day!

  • +1

"If you're wondering what The Sizzle is all about, here's some comments from the last time"

How about telling us what it is?
Pay to have tech aggregation delivered more neatly? (that's what I gathered from a glance of a couple of archives)

Can't say if you're overselling or underselling, but I'm going to assume the former because there's not much to undersell.
    No thanks.

    • +1

I thought "Technology Newsletter" and "Australia's best technology newsletter", would have been enough info, but you also checked out the archives, which is great! If you saw the archives and don't think the product is worth it, then that's fine.

Maybe get a free trial instead and see how you like it when it comes in fresh? https://thesizzle.com.au

  • +4

Damn I thought Sizzler is back in Australia

    • +1

      I wish :(

  • +2

Honestly, it's worth the subscription price alone to avoid having to check what's on Ozbargain constantly. The Sizzle newsletter always seems to flag the best bargains, so I just scan that as it comes into my inbox each weekday.
The tech stories are well written with a good dose of scepticism and humour where required, and again saves me pouring through multiple websites each day.
Best of all, there's an Aussie flavour to it that I've not found anywhere else.
    Get on it!

    • Cheers for the kind words!

  • I heartily endorse this event or product, except goatwomble beat me too it. Typical.

    • goatwomble has a habit of doing that.

  • +1

I have been a subscriber for a few years now, and every weekday in the afternoon I'm very excited when I receive a copy of The Sizzle in my inbox (beats all the spam and advertisements emails!).

It keeps me up to date on what's going in the tech world. He also includes a daily deal section with links to Ozbargain - but it's a bold assumption that I haven't spend the whole morning on ozb anyway 😁

    • +2

I save you time reading the news so you can spend more time on OzBargain!

  • This or NYT sub?

    • +1

If you're only gonna pick one, get the New York Times. They aren't gonna tell you a damn thing about any Australian tech news though.

      • +1

Do things like data retention laws fall under the scope of your coverage?
I mean, assuming for arguments sake that we had data retention laws.

        • +2

I do! I wrote about it just this week, as the government is going to do a review of what data has to be retained, as they're worried about too much data being leaked when the companies that have to hold that data get hacked.

    • Try Techmeme.com newsletter. It's free, more comprehensive (if you just want a summary, just read the bigger headlines at the top), and it's less 'consumery' and focuses on the actual 'meat and bones' of tech.

No disrespect to The Sizzle. I respect anyone that works that consistently over a long period of time on something. I just don't personally see the value in it.

      • If The Sizzle is too consumer for you, check out The Crux - https://pivotnine.com/newsletter/
Australian, enterprise IT focus, once a week, free.

        • Had a quick peek at their 'Get a Taste' examples; The first newsletter I looked at, the very top headline was 4 days old when they posted it. Pretty much lost me there honestly.

          • @jarrod: 4 days? More like 2 months - 25th of Sept is the latest issue on the website, hahaha. I guess it is an email newsletter not a blog, gotta subscribe to get the latest weekly issues, but it sounds like you want latest news delivered to you daily soon as it happens. Techmeme is perfect for that raw data dump daily.

  • +5

Note, the author is very opinionated so if you agree with all his views you will enjoy the newsletter. You will enjoy it less if you don't.

    • -1

On the whole I would say the commentary is at times colourful but usually reasonable, and rarely, if ever, outright controversial. Unless you're an Elon fanboy…

What I do appreciate is that each entry in the newsletter has its own "Discuss" link under it, so if you vehemently disagree whats written you can be taken straight to the Sizzle forums to reply.

      • Also if people prefer to have a go at me in private, you can reply to every email I send and I will read it and 99% of time I will respond back. There's a handful of subscribers that I reckon subscribe purely out of spite as every few weeks they complain about something and love to email me about it, haha.

    • +1

Agreed - if you think Elon Musk is a top bloke, agree that encryption backdoors should be allowed, are a fan of the NBN and think they do a great job and reckon women shouldn't be allowed near computers, then yeah, you're gonna have a bad time with The Sizzle.

      • This guy exists only in your head

  • Subscriber for two (or maybe three) years and don't see that changing.

Renewal falls due in June. Any way to sign up to this and stack with my existing subscription so the year applies after the current paid period ends? Totally get it if thats too much hassle. I'll pay the full price when it falls due :D

    • I didn't realise but when you cancel your subscription, it ends immediately…. with a pro rata refund of the remaining subscription.

    • +1

No way to stack subs unfortunately, I haven't figured that out in Chargebee if it is possible. I should really look into it as I reckon a lot of people would like to pre-pay in advance. Won't happen for this promo, but maybe the next one.

  • Can we get a shared family account? Is there any cashback available for this? If so, can I pay with gift-card?

    • Shared family account - set up an email forwarder in your email client that whenever an issue of the Sizzle comes in, it's forwarded to a list of addresses.
      Cashback - no
      Gift card - yes: https://thesizzle.com.au/gift

  • Can get the same for free from several tech blogs without the needless commentary. Dude loves to tell you his opinion………

    • Opinions are like arseholes, everyone's got one and they're full of shit.

      • Your whole daily email seems to be opinion. Glad you said it as it is :)

  • Would this be tax deductible as an it worker?

  • Is there an RSS feed?

    • Technically, no, but about 30 people use Feedbin's email to RSS service where it generates a special email address like [email protected] and any email sent to that address appear in an RSS feed within Feedbin. Maybe other RSS services have a similar feature.

I am experimenting with a unique RSS feed for each member they can subscribe to, but it prob won't be ready for production use until late-Jan-ish.

      • Fair enough. I'd be inclined to try if that feature becomes available next year.

  • Love Sizzle and have been using paid Sub since last 2 years. Its just the cost of one coffee a month and adds so much value.
    Good job @decyption

    • +1

      Thanks for subscribing!

  • As a lapsed previous sub can I use the deal to resub?

Edit: Tried anyway - yes it does work. Feels nice to be back on board after a short absence.

    • Welcome back! The forums are a nice perk for paid subscribers to hang out and shoot the breeze on tech topics with other nerds - https://forum.thesizzle.com.au

  • +1

$5 a month for someone knowledgeable to read through the tech news of the day and summarise them for me? Hell yes. Total timesaver and I appreciate the tastefully used swears. Thanks @decryption!

    • Appreciate it mate :)

  • I didn’t think the Sizzle was for me (despite liking decryption’s blog and social posts), because I already read a lot about tech, and follow a lot of the primary sources decryption does too.

But it is a great 2 minute snack each day that I happily open in the inbox when I see it - only ever a 2min read, summarizes the key stuff with a short comment. Has a bit of whimsy with a picture and a song. A pleasant diversion.

Worth reading even if I often later dig into more info etc. because it is timely and nicely written.

So give it a go, even if you think “i don’t need another ICT newsletter.”

    • Thanks for trying out The Sizzle! If anyone wants to give it a shot for free, just visit https://thesizzle.com.au

  • I have subbed to the 90-day trial. If I like what I see (read) then I will be subscribing.

    • Beautiful - that's exactly how a free trial should work. Enjoy the newsletter!

    • Just do another trial tbh.

      • +1

Thanks for reminding me to implement some logic to stop people getting multiple free trials one after the other :)
