    • The 18TB on there is about $3 cheaper unless I'm missing something. Not that big of a difference?

“ 3 Years Australian Store Warranty
Note: 1. Warranty coverage is hardware only, users are responsible for their own data backup.
      2. Warranty is deliver by our strore instead of manufacturer”

Hmmm I doubt this “strore” will exist in 3 years….

As opposed to voiding warranty on shucked drives which may require you to even tape down pins?

        • +1

          For WD's probably.

Seagate shucked drives on the other hand still show up as in warranty on manufacturers website.
          They're 'full label' ironwolf pros.
You can't go back to the store, but you can do an OEM replacement; just pretend you didn't buy it in an enclosure :)

I've done probably a dozen over the years.

Also that 'tape down pin' thing is a feature of SATA3.3, allowing power cycles on compatible backplanes.
It's only required if the end user doesn't have a compatible backplane; but there's always some hackery when using newer hardware with older hardware.

I don't think that makes them a rip, just if you intend to shuck it, these don't have the same value anymore. It is still a good price for an external HDD, which many people do still use for backups.

      Its Amazon warranty, dude, wtf?

      • -5

Sounds to me like you don't know what shucking is and that it can void warranty.

        • +1

Do you? I keep my cases when I shuck.

@nuker: LOL then why would you buy these over enterprise grade exos drives that are cheaper per TB for bottom of the barrel WD shucked drives? Makes no sense

            • @Viospeed: Helium.

              • @nuker: So you're saying you would pay more for consumer grade drives that need to be shucked then enterprise exos drives that are cheaper?

Which model WD drive are in these? Do they require ghetto tape on the connector?

Reviews also say they don't come with an AU adapter and some guy even said warranty was refused.

                • @Viospeed:

Do they require ghetto tape on the connector?

Thats only if you're using it with an incompatible backplane.
It's thee 'Power Down' feature of the SAS3/SATA3.3 specification; allowing a hardware reboot without physically removing the drive.

It's not the drives fault if people are using this with older SATA specifications; in which case you don't need to tape the pins, you can just run a power adaptor cable between the two standards.

@MasterScythe: No idea why you would buy an inferior drive that costs more and requires shucking over a cheaper per TB enterprise drive that is plug n play.

                    • +2

@Viospeed: Do you just like repeating yourself over and over?

                    • @Viospeed: Most wouldnt.

That has nothing to do with just clarifying sata 3.3 spec though.

About the only reason I imagine people might opt for these drives over enterprise would be noise.

    • Just simply put the drive back in the enclosure for warranty cases. its amazon as well, one of the best retailers to deal with when it comes to warranty claims.

I got this exact one for $411.08 a year ago, inflation sucks

    • +1

Yeah. No one is a fan of inflation. No wonder everyone is feeling poorer this year.

  • OOS, went to $528

  • Dam… shouldn’t have sat on it.
