AH… so tempting! I already have a Barista Express (and an external grinder - Niche Zero) which is working great and making very good coffees. Has anyone here upgraded to the Dual Boiler from the Barista Express? Is there a significant improvement to the quality/taste?
Problem is I have so many accessories for the Barista Express (54mm) and would have to start from scratch if I got this… But I've always wanted a machine with a standard 58mm portafilter (though I don't really know how much difference it makes).

    • +2

I'm in the exact same predicament. Except, my grinder is an Eureka Mingon.

I've been holding off buying a new tamper too incase I do get a 58mm machine.

      • Which eureka model

        • EUREKA MIGNON SPECIALITA

      • some that had em7000 sunbeam one for 10year now have cheap 599 barista express black one em7000 that was dual boiler was better.

    • +3

I upgraded from Barista express and have zero regrets. I think they can make the same great coffee. It's just quicker and more convenient to use, especially if you are making multiple coffees at a time.

      • +3

I can echo the same sentiments on moving from the Express to the DB. One thing people really need to keep in mind is that both machines are capable of making great coffee, the DB just provides an overall nicer user experience, and a more substantial feeling machine. The most noticeable difference is actually the steam wand - significantly higher pressure available instantly, unlike the Express where you ideally needed to let it get up to pressure first, before dipping it in the milk. I managed to pick mine up for $725, been very happy with the upgrade.

If you're not interested in getting deep into coffee and just want to make a decent cup at home, I think the Barista Pro or a Bambino Plus + Grinder may be a better option for most people.

        • Also went from express to DB and echo your sentiments completely. I think the easier control over pre-infusion time and temps make it a bit easier to dial in dark roasts if that's your thing.

Both steam wands are capable of latte art quality milk but, far more consistent with the db.

And, my final observation is purely personal but given the db is a pretty big investment, I run pureau water mixed with tap water at a 2:1 ratio through the machine which is a bit of a hassle, whereas with the express I never felt inclined to.

      • Same pump situation? My BES 870 is a channeling machine at 12 bar..

        • I used to have the express before upgrading, it was set up to very high bars may be 12-13bar. I did some mod and went down to 9bar (adjust the screw of OPV or cut the spring), drawback too much water in the waste tray.
I think the newer recent model comes with 9 bar (at least that is what is been advertise now).

          • @huntabargain: Yep. I got one a few weeks ago and if the dial is right, it gets to 9 bar.

          • @huntabargain: Yeah, not a fan of simply allowing more water to divert into the tray via the OPV. Need to setup a dimmer circuit to the pump. Guessing the new one has this, as they all use the same pump.

    • I have my Barista Express model for almost 10 years, I always thought once it's stopped working I will swap for a better one.
So far it's going exceptionally strong…doesn't have any signs of failure.

    • +1

      I've owned both.

      1. Steam wand is way more powerful and so much more enjoyable to use
      2. In built shot timer so i dont have to use a phone every time im dialing in my shots
      3. PID built in
      4. Have to empty the drip tray way less often (like 10x less often) - this was a major difference
      5. 58mm may not provide any appreciable difference but just feels nicer to use
      6. Dual boiler obviously so you can pull a shot and steam milk at the same time - way easier and quicker for multiple drinks

Definitely worth the upgrade for me personally

  • This item does not post to you :,(

  • Sorry, may seem like a silly question but if you're already a eBay Plus member, how does purchasing a $1 item make it cheaper?

    • +5

      Currently it’s only giving a $70 discount
To get a $100 discount, you need to spend $1000 or more, so adding a $1 item will achieve that

      • +1

        Thanks!

  • Great features but still looks like an appliance. Even if they did a faux Italian style machine so it looks good on the bench and not like a (profanity) toaster. Still can't bring myself to it, will end up spending 2.5k just to upgrade the looks.

    • +11

What advantages does the 2.5k upgrade have over say a train, which I could also afford?

      • What I'm alluding to is that a half decent Italian style machine with similar features to the Breville, will start around 2.5k. You're paying for I guess durability and long term replacement parts but most importantly, it looks like a coffee machine. Not a toaster.

        • +9

Literally no one is going to mistake a DB for a toaster, but I take your point. Those machines may look nicer, but keep in mind the design of the DB delivers an excellent user experience. Everything is easy to access and clean, you can clearly see how much water is left in the well sized reservoir and fill it up from the front, big well concealed drip tray unlike some Italian machines where you can see the coffee sludge easily etc. The DB will also heat up significantly faster than almost any of the Italian machines.

Beyond that, the DB is one of the few appliances in Australia that we get the best price for on the planet, even at the US retail of US$1599 it's considered to be one of the best value machines on the market and here we are paying less than half of that. Conversely, we pay significantly higher prices for the Italian machines than most other countries, thanks to the typical Australia tax.

I love beautiful design, but just couldn't go past the value offered - haven't regretted once and I think its a fairly handsome machine on the counter.

          • +1

@poppingtags: Yes, I take your point and objectively that's why I struggle. It's feature rich and the price is on point but if it looks like it comes from The Good Guys, I can't bring myself to it. A pity that the ratchet up to the next tier is so big. Or you just have to pounce on FB marketplace on a good second hand Italian machine.

          • @poppingtags: I agree with all what you said. I passed on getting one (BDB), mainly it was too bulky and very wide and the nobs being on the side, it made it even worst to fit my limited bench space next to my grinder. That is why I opted for dual boiler Italian machine at only 240mm wide and all knobs at the front. It is like workhorse machine.

        • Duh, just put a paper bag over the (group) head.

      • +1

the 2.5 k upgrade will give you a coffee and sometimes the appreciative looks of your friends. A train will be hard to pull a shot with, the amount of tracks you need to lay, the amount of fuel to run it, the amount of cabinet space to put the locomotive and passenger cars into will all be a pain. Plus all the suburb will start lining up at your door trying to catch the next train.

  • +1

Thanks mate! Did a c&c through gg commercial last night for $964, thinking it wouldn't go any lower. Will be collecting and immediately returning for a refund, lol.

    • +1

Can’t you just call up and cancel the pickup order?

  • +2

    suggestions on the grinder please?

    • +7

      Eureka Mignon

      • Would be the good life to have one of those.

If you're on a budget, like me, I can recommend the kingrinder k4. It's hard work at espresso grind fineness so only really good if you're making coffee for yourself.

  • +2

$1 Gutter Guard can be used to cover your garden plant soil so the cats don't dig and do their business.

  • Just not sure if I should get this or spend more on an Italian made machine.

From what I read a lot of repairs can be done for this type of machine.

    • Which Italian machine?

      • That's the question..

Some of them take a long time to heat up. Most dual boilers are about 3k plus need a grinder.

    • Get this clearly

Only reason to get something else is for looks - there is no machine under ~3k that has the functionality of the BDB. Its the undisputed king under $3k

    • Absolutely this.

Have an italian machine, wish I got my BDB back. I have no choice but to love the new machine or the wife will leave me.

  • Single coffee drinker household… this or the barista express for $588 at JB. ?

    • +4

I’ve got the Barista Express at home for my morning coffee push before work. Not too sure if I would pay $500 extra for the Dual Boiler if I’m the only one using it

Also keep in mind that you’d need a grinder for the Dual Boiler

      • +1

Thank you, just needed to hear it!

    • +3

      Bambino plus and a grinder

      • +2

I’ve got the regular Bambino and a Eureka Mignon Specialita. Couldn’t be happier with the minimal bench space used and super quick boiling time.

I’ve been pulling better shots than any cafe in my area and I don’t think I’d need anything better.

        • do you rate the mignon

          • @woahxd: Coming from a Breville Smart Grinder pro - it’s amazing.

Built like a tank, looks nice (chrome and black) and does a really good job without being noisy. If something happened to it, I’d buy another straight away.

            • @Reticent: I’ve got the smart grinder pro and can’t wait to get rid of it. Noisy, slow and retention is very inconsistent even with the same beans I have found. I’ll be over or under 1.5 grams even if the settings don’t change. Pretty clumpy as well

              • +1

@piston3461: They just feel worlds apart. The Specialita just feels and performs like a premium grinder.

I got mine last year on a Black Friday sale from Espressocoffeeshop. I believe they’re doing the same pricing again right now if you’re wanting to pull the trigger. Believe it’s roughly 570AUD incl shipping.

    • Bambino Plus & Grinder (don't get a smeg grinder)

  • +4

Thanks for sharing. Just purchased using 2 discounted ebay Gift Cards (6%).

BES920 for about $850 is great buying in 2023.

  • Is this considered black friday deal?

Any likely to get better deals?

  • Do these usually have lot of stock

Wonder if will sell out soon

  • I did try to get JB and Good guys to match, best i got was a $950 out of the good guys if anyone else comes across this after Bing Lee run out of stock

  • Love my 920. Make sure you never descale. Only use reconstituted water…

  • +1

I assume they are selling newer stock with the ‘seal fix’ but can anyone confirm?
