This is quite niche, and the resolving power means it is only really useful for biologic specimens. Which is great if that is what you want, but it is pretty involved for kids unless they are high school age+
For most kids, I'd suggest a cheap binocular microscope, which is great for looking at things they can see, like a grain of sand, or splinter of wood, magnified 20 or 40 times revealing its structure - much easier to use too.

I'd have thought optical microscopes are obsolete now, and you'd be better with a USB model.

I see they even have digital microscopes with built-in display for similar price: https://ebay.com.au/itm/256087638917
      Are those any good?

      • I've played with one and they are fun. An optical microscope doesn't run out of batteries (well, they usually do have a lamp) and will last forever. The digital ones are great for allowing multiple people to see what is going on at once.

They are both cool things for curious kids (and grown ups).

I got this during the Covid lockdowns, and it was a hit with the kids. Both were so disappointed at not being able to find "Covid" but discovered so many other invisible things like fungi, bacteria, and water things. Etc etc.

Money was well spent, and they discovered other worlds.

        Trust the Science BTW

    • When I was a kid I had some microscope kit, where there was a bunch of rectangular glass plates, and we would just put like an ant, or any insect or other things on it, sticky tape, then put it under the microscope, does this advertised kit not do the same, is there a cheaper one that's similar? Would love to get one for the kids to try out.
