Router & NVR Placement in House

Hi guys,

I have a house that has just finished construction and am wanting assistance in the best layout for the placement of the router and NVR.

I am wanting to put a x4 POE security cameras around my house. Unfortunately, the builders have put the x4 Ethernet ports in the living room, and not inside the cupboard which is what I indicated.

I initially wanted all the NVR, router and the switch upstairs In the cupboard but now I don’t think that is possible.

I have attached a photo of the patch panel in the living room and another photo of the single port in the upstairs cupboard.

What is my best option here for the least messiest option and best placement?

**I am planning to get the RLN36 from Reolink, Tp-link switch, x4 poe camera from Reolink.

At the moment, I have my NBN box in the garage connected to the wan port in the living room through a port inside the garage. Which is kind of messy looking and ideally want it in the cupboard.

If it you have it in writing where it was supposed to be installed then you should be able to get them to rectify it.

4 cameras probably isn't enough for ideal coverage especially if you are going for a door bell in the future. Duos give good coverage at the cost of detail. The 8MP version of the low light CX410 is in development and will be the final replacement of all my current reolink cameras.

  • I have a house that has just finished construction and am wanting assistance in the best layout for the placement of the router and NVR.

Should've planned it before construction on wiring or could you not change the plans?

    • Unfortunately, I did specify it in the plans during early construction phase but as I have built with a volume builder who took 2 years overdue to build the house, I didn’t want to delay it any further.

  • Just put the NVR under the tv. Connect to your tv so you can refer back to the tv if you want to watch footage. Most NVRs now have it linked to your phone anyway.

  • NBN put my Wan box at the far end of the house in a bedroom (old house, not freestanding, no other option they said). I used a Netcomm Powerline to transfer the NBN feed to exactly where I needed the modem/router. Worked perfectly, no loss of speed. If anyone is trying that, check your circuits - the Powerline only worked on some of my circuits, not all.Trial and error is the only method I know of for that hack.

  • NVR can still go in the bedroom but POE switch to power cameras would need to go in the living room with current setup.

    • Would I leave my router in the garage or where the living room is ?

      • Doesn't really matter where you put the router from what I'm seeing unless you are using it for wifi connection and need it central. https://www.reddit.com/r/reolinkcam/ is a good place to ask about the cameras when you are at that point. Some users are also good with networking so if you post the photos (preferably with labels as to where each port goes) you should get some good advice.
