Lawn Mowing Quote

Hi guys.

Just wondering if a lawnmowing quote for front and back of house. Lawn size about 150m2 is reasonable.

The lawn is a bit overgrown.

1 quoted $400
2nd quote $100

Is $400 actually reasonable?
Is it normal to have such a wide difference in quote?

Thank you!

Update. Thank you all for the comments! I might just go with the cheaper guy. Seems $400 is too high for the job.

Update. Went with the cheaper guy. He did an excellent job.

Well did either bloke actually go into detail of what’s done?

Eg mowed to catcher and taken away? Or mow to mulch ? Or mow and use your green bin

    Line trim?

    Weed spraying?

    • Mow to mulch only using my green bin.

Lawn. Cut the tall weeds and clear the ones on pavements. Edges.

Both guys quoting at same? $100 dude is undervaluing himself for sure

        • Yeh same work!

I just don't if I'm getting super ripped off by the first one.

$400 makes for a good hourly rate, if you were near me I'd do it
    .

Two cuts and you've purchased all the gear required to do it yourself….

  • Does that include doing the edges?
Sounds like one lawn mowing company does not need to work and has quoted appropriately. My brother is in the concreting game and if he has too much work on he still quotes, but quotes between 2 and 4 times the normal price in the hope they do not accept it and if they do then he has to pay his employees overtime to get the work done. So his costs are more so he quotes more.

    • Thanks!

It also includes doing the edges.

If that's the case maybe I will try get a third quote.

Not sure why it's so hard to get people to even come quote nowadays. Everyone is too busy or not taking on new customers.

Unemployment rate in Australia is 3.7%, that's why.

$400 is a "I don't want the work but for $400 I'd do anything" way of trying to get you to go away, but they'll take the cash if you're really desperate.

  • Scam

Is the $400 doing it on a Sunday? Normal Sunday rates are $420.69

Per @freefall101, $400 is code for "not interested" but happy days if quote accepted. Why not acquire a lawnmower?

  • Did either actually see the job prior to the quote and is "a bit overgrown" going to mean using a slasher?

    • They both saw it in person.

  • Thanks all!! Does anyone know a guy who will give reasonable quotes? I'm in sydney

    Scam.

I used to get someone to mow my lawn but inflation started then I got my own.

Best thing I did was go on FB marketplace, bought myself a used $150 mower. Works like a charm.

$100 sounds too cheap and $400 too expensive, but if it is really overgrown and/or a large property then it could be right.

Mowing services are not cheap but they do a good job and work hard for their money.

Apparently borrowing Sheep because of drought is a thing.

Also, Lamb with Rosemary (or Thyme or Lemon Myrtle)? lol

        Thyme for sure!

    • you can also milk it, ride it, eat it MMMOOOOOO :-)

How long would it take you to do it? Probably around $75 per hr is reasonable (although I’m not used to Sydney pricing).

Why not just go with the $100 guy. It’s mowing the lawn, it’s not like anyone can permanently mess it up. If they do an 80% job then live with it, you will have to do it again in a month anyway

  • I can’t see your lawn, but $400 might be reasonable if it’s overgrown to get it back in check. Ask them how much to keep it maintained, could be less than $100 ongoing.

The $100 quote could be high for a regular mow and this person is just gonna cop it on the chin to get it back to reasonable to keep the work.

$400 isn't too high, but $420 is high

    • Wrong country

  • I've seen a gulf between quotes - not quite this big - because it was a smallish property and one guy was going to do it with a standard whipper snipper and the other with an overkill ride on mower. Ride on guy wasn't keen to unload his mower for such a small job, so quoted much higher.

150m^2 isn't too small but if $400 guy's tools don't suit the job he might be less keen. Maybe the first $300 is buying him a heavy duty brush cutter.

    • You might be right. The $100 guy had a trailer full of tools.

So your lawn is about 10m x 15m ( for instance) & you can’t spare 20 minutes a month to cut it yourself?

  • Buy once cry once

I have an 800sqm block and pay $70 for mow and whipper snip the edges. He doesn't do a perfect job but for $70 I can live with it.

  • You should go with the $400 version. It's the same as buying organic, you'll just feel better about yourself for spending more and getting the same result.

  • Costs me $70 for my lawn, front and back. Takes him on average 1.5hrs and includes edges and taking away grass cuttings. He does a good job.
Couldn't contemplate paying $100, let alone $400 for a lawn

    • He’s way underpriced at $70 if it takes him that long. It’s more like $70 an hour minimum. But most established contractors work on a figure of $100 per hour when planning their runs.

  • $400 quote basically say, CBF and not really interested to give you a fair price, but if you're an idiot to accept it, then I can be persuaded

  • The guy who quoted $400 probably has heaps of work already and quality a premium as his not worried about getting more work.

  • Just go with $100 guy, if he doesn't do a good job then he won't be getting another $100 off you. But if the $400 guy does a bad job you're out $300+…
