ASICS Vs Skechers Shoes for Men

Hi all, I'm needing advice on new sneakers for men.

Usually purchase ASICS Gel Kayano, and at the moment wear ASICS Gel Kayano 27 which the heel is completely worn down. Trying to find similar shoe in Sketchers brand. Standard size only US11.5 . I'm overpaying $180 on sale when the sneakers only last me like 6 months of normal wear. Use it mainly for walking not any sport specific activity. I'm seeing Sketchers online for under $100 that may suit and prefer to buy online rather than go instore.

Can anyone who is familiar with both brands please recommend similar in Sketchers or other brand? Also interested in any upcoming sales but need the shoes fairly urgently.

  • Maybe look at trail runners, I've got a pair of ASICS and I doubt you'll wear the soles out befoe the uppers. They also have a reinforced toe area.

ASICS is a proper supportive sports shoe. Skechers are for casual use at best.

    • Generic reply. But there are some pretty shit Asics sports style shoes. There are some better sketchers models out there. But yeah, the general consensus is sketchers are shit and are a nice referral source for Pods.

    • Use it mainly for walking not any sport specific activity.

I wonder if your wife's podiatrist would recommend for this?

  • The Kayano 27 (imo one of the shit reiterations) has really really changed for the 29 and 30 in becoming more rocker, no polypropolene midplate.

If you want a similars stable xtrainer:

    Brooks Ghost, Glycerin
    Asics: Kayano, GT4000, 3000

I'd recommend trying something with more modern geometry/rocker.

    Hoka Bondi (softer) Clifton (firmer)
    Brooks Ghost Max
    On Cloudstratus

I can offer more alternatives, but you get what you pay for. Shoes have actually changed a lot in the last few years. Thank the Nike Next % and the current Adidas Hypershoes giving normal consumers watered down mechanically doped shoes.

    • Thank you for those suggestions i will look into it in more detail

Most running shoes focus on providing a mix of support, speed and cushioning to varying levels against trying to keep weight low eg the Hoka bondi has a lot of cushioning but not a speed shoe. If you are just walking then probably a hiking shoe will be more useful and longer lasting - they generally have a lot less cushioning (because they arent used in a high impact situation like running), more support and dont worry about speed and are often heavier (which allows them to add some bits that add extra longevity eg thicker soles). End result is that they generally last longer than a running shoe (but obviously with trade offs eg heavier, you cant use them for running).

Trail shoes are a bit of a hybrid between running and hiking but if you are just walking then perhaps you dont even need the running element. But some people like the additional cushioning

You do need to go and try hiking shoes because some brands will fit/feel comfortable and others wont, they all have different widths and toe boxes and the rest. Also some shoes are waterproof (you probably dont need/are more expensive), some are designed for more specific activities (eg greater grip for rocks) etc. You probably dont need those extra elements, just a basic hiking shoe should be fine and you probably dont need a boot, just a shoe.

I like Salomon but thats because they fit me well; others love Merrell (the Moab 3 is often rated the best budget shoe) or Keen or Scarpa, there is no 'right answer'. Even Hi-Tec, which are fairly cheap, might be totally fine if you are just walking around.

However its fair to say you wont save any or much money going for a hiking shoe unless you hang out for the sales; but they will likely last you a lot longer than a specialist running shoe.

    • Exactly, buy a shoe for the purpose it will be used for.
