Champagne for a Wedding

My learned colleagues I am seeking your assistance.

My only job for a small budget conscious wedding is to arrange 10-12 bottles of champagne for a welcome drink. If I fail this task I anticipate the divorce proceedings to begin the following day. Any big champagne drinkers in the house who can point me in the direction of the best value? I will do my best to match a sale with a cashback but any advice is appreciated.

(edit)Thankyou everyone for your thoughtful and amusing advice. Plenty to think about.

    Moet

OP hasn't provided a Budget. Yes Moet for any celebration but not everyone's favourite.

So for the budget conscious I have found Grandin a lovely French champagne for around $15

Suggest OP buys a bottle of each, takes them home and asks the prospective wife to choose without showing the bottle.
Because more often than not, the champs has already been poured as guests roll in

I'd say that this is "value" (relative to the cost of what divorce proceedings would otherwise cost).

Does it have to be champagne (i.e. the real stuff)?
The cheapest I'm seeing at Dans is $55/bottle for Piper-Heidsieck Brut, or a Moet&Chandon for $65 (with a 3-bottle limit), but it also comes down to what style you like.
TBH, it is probably worth having a tasting session with your partner and choose one that way.

thankyou, appreciate the advice. We might do that…..date night sorted :)

If the bottle label doesn't matter then the Aldi is probably the best value ($33). If you care about the brand then for value go Piper-Heidsieck ($50-55).

Just put Coolabah through a Soda Stream.

      Fruity lexia makes you sexier

    • LOL! Wonderful idea.

Moet, Piper or Veuve can't really go wrong.

Will be $50-$80 a bottle, but if you only need 10-12 bottles $500-$800 should come within budget.

Else if budget is a factor. Mumm is a great quality alternative for $40 a bottle

You should have some non alcoholic version on hand for the drivers, underage and recovering.

      That's not very piratey
      .

  • If you can access some winery cellar doors;

Sometimes they have a case (dozen) of unlabeled sparkling wine from previous bottlings that had too much wine and ran out of labels.

    These are typically cheaper.

A potential idea / gift that would be good with unlabeled bottles; arrange labels with Wedding couples' names, date, and a love poem or inside joke.
Maybe get 13 and suggest cellaring one for their 50th wedding university (can't comment if this will improve the wine, more of a cute sentiment).

I suppose if OP was in France they could visit some wineries.

If you just get some Moet that will be fine. Otherwise, Bird in Hand Sparkling is very popular, and tastes pretty un-offensive for the price.

    • and a bird in the hand…

Mumm is usually cheaper than Moet

    • Cheers, I will have a look and see if this will keep the boss happy

OzBarginers only wedding. I like it.

Anything Aldi if you're looking at purely cost.

Get Prosecco mate. Tastes the same, the guests will love it! I own a mobile bar and we serve prosecco at weddings all the time, nobody asks for champers!

    • Any suggestions on a cheap prosecco?

      • Tempus Two or Brown Brothers is the most popular. Cant go wrong with either one.

Fitzy's Fresh Seafood (Tarragindi) stocks Madame Coco Blanc de Blancs Brut NV @$20, you just have to buy some fish as well. Grays will ship a case of 12 for $218. This link for some product details: https://cloudwine.com.au/products/madame-coco-blanc-de-blanc…

    • Thankyou! I will check it out

One option to look at is House of Arras. It's not champagne but it's the best Australian bubbly around. Jansz is also another very good choice (also Tassie).

A lot of the House of Arras stuff is on sale through cellarone.com.au, Accolade (who run cellarone) sold the brand off a couple of months ago so I wonder if they're clearing out the wines. IMO the Cuvée 1701 is a cracker at $50 a bottle (although might not be to taste of everyone).

Looking at cellarone, the Croser they have for $26.50 a bottle is actually very good too.

Another vote for Veuve. Eye-catching bottle, tastes good and most have heard of it.

  • +2

Just to add my two bob, this was my favourite lower budget sparkling wine at the venue I worked at, Jansz

    Penfolds Minchinbury.

I personally really dislike Moët but love Veuve as a standard Champagne.

Do you have any examples of what champagne she likes?

  • The French sank ‘Rainbow Warrior’. Buy Australian.

    • +1

The French sank ‘Rainbow Warrior’ (in Auckland)

      Maybe OP should buy NZ?

      • Even better (if they make a good bubbly.)

        • They certainly do, but it isn't champagne

  • +1

If you have money, then French champagne Moet & Chandon.
If you don't have too much money, then any Rose champagne from Australia. Rose is pronounced rosay. FYI.
Easy enough to place an order from Dan Murphys online.

    • Champagne can only be called champagne if it's made in Champagne. Ergo, there is no such thing as rosé champagne from Australia, only rosé sparkling wine
