Are they comparable to RACQ or NRMA?

    • +2

I've used them occasionally over the last few years. Always helpful and on time in my experience. I've previously had NRMA and had the same level of support. So in my experience, much the same 😊

      • +2

why the downvote? is there something missing?

      • -1

        I've used them occasionally

I don't understand why the downvotes, they must be from paid shockpuppet trolls, employees and relatives lurking around Ozbargain.
I think NRMA only operate in NSW so it would useful to mention what is your experience and in which state you're located.
Regarding RACQ it was hard and painful to understand their T&C especially regarding out of pocket expenses, but we're talking about insurance companies and that is the main reason I stay away because they make rules hard to understand on purpose.
Still dealing through the AFCA because the insurance (motor) warranty company for my car (second hand) refused to approve repairs (after only 500Km) so we are at it again with insurance companies, either I pay for repairs upfront or my car stays in the garage.

        • +1

It is a completely different post now having been edited. The original was pretty bad; came across as dismissive and insulting. No point dwelling on it but the downvotes were warranted and it's not because of trolls or anything to do with the companies involved.

    • https://www.mynrma.com.au/join-roadside for $8/$30 I'm not going to gamble

      • +6

$8? The cheapest NRMA plan is $129/year… I'm not boffin but that seems like a $60 difference to me.

        • $129 is unlimited call outs. Apples to apples. Nrma RACQ and RACV all also give loyalty discounts. Cheaper every year

      • Monthly?

  • +1

    Nationwide ?

  • I hope so, I just signed up and I’m in Victoria!
I see their logo is a picture of Australia so it would give the impression it’s Australia wide, I’ll look into it.

  • +1

Yes, it says Australia wide coverage, all good.

  • +1

Been with 24/7 for a little while now. They are responsive and helpful, and much cheaper than tacking roadside assistance on to your existing comprehensive cover.

  • +2

My renewal from NRMA just came in. $129. 2019 car. Used them once in the last 4 years for a $440 battery replacement.

I might give this a try. Thanks OP.

    • $440?? A deep discharge battery or something big?

      • +2

AGM batteries in stop/start cars are freakin' expensive. I was quoted $650 for my Calais. Cheapest I could find was still over $500

        • How long do they last for?

          • @Fobsessive: Supposed to last from three to ten years. The trick is not to let them go flat too often and regular use. They do have a long shelf life compared to lead acid. They need a special charger too, if they go flat they open circuit and a standard charger won't work

        • Just turn off the start stop function.

    • $440?! Damn.. what kind of truck are you driving?!
I always paid around $300 to $320 for on-the-spot swap and that is usually only $20 more than what I can get a auto store.

      • VW caddy with stop/start. It's a big battery.

In hindsight, I should have seen the signs the battery was dying(stop/start wasn't engaging), and replaced the battery myself.

    Can't say no to 69

  • +3

Same price direct. And 2 yr plan on their main site for $110. That’s only $55 a year!

    • -4

4 calls for the whole 2 years though

      • +2

I read it as 4 calls per year.
Anyways as someone who has called 0 times in 5 years this fits me.

Edit: “ Service Calls Per Annum”: 4
So 4 per year, 8 total

        • +1

ya you are right its per annum

        • If a car needs more than 4 calls per annum, you need a new car or a new driver.

  • $69 a year is normal price for me in Queensland. how is this a deal‽

    • For the price of a couple of Maccas meals you can have 24/7 help with your car for a whole year. Seems like a deal to me?

      • Yes, this is like normal price for 24/7 RA. I paid 69/yr. last year and got 10% off on renewal.

        • +3

          And you never shared it!

          • @CodeXD: They called me and me asked me if I wanted to renew @10% off.

    • Then it is not a deal for you. Why is that bothering you?

      • +3

Just trying to understand if I missing something here. If this is normal price then it should go under long running deals

  • Is this just for new customers only?

  • +2

Check fine print. If you have an EV then will only assist with towing (with the 20km/50km urban rural limits), so they don't have EV chargers on-board like some other services.

    • Deal breaker for me right there.

    • +1

Looking at NRMA (unless the article I read is old), they only do mobile EV charging in Sydney and Canberra .. and I mean literally in Syd and Can, not in the whole of those states even. Kind of useless.

  • +2

I'm with 24/7 Roadservices. I had a flat tyre last week and they arrived within 10 minutes. I need to say that they were pleasant to deal with.
    I'm in ACT.

I have logged in just to post a comment on this..I currently have this plan…it is ending soon and I am not going to renew it..The wait time for the guy to turn up is atleast twice in comparison to my previous provider RAA as they use independent contractors so it takes them time to call and get someone close.. to agree to come to the Job.. If for any reason..there turned out to be a bigger or complex issue with the car..they won't perform the job unless 24/7 haggles and agree to paying them more on the spot.. One more thing as I learned the hard way..if for some reason you have an older model car (as i do) and you forget your keys inside as i did or loose them…. you would also have to pay $30 out of pocket cost (gap charge) on top of your Tier 5 membership cost.

    • who you going with when renewing?

    • I'll pass if they are using contractors. Thanks.

      • Who doesn’t use contractors nowadays? 😬 I think nrma doesn’t as you always see their cars

        • Maybe you're right. I've always been with RACQ and they are first class. Very wary to change given some of the horror stories with other companies.

  • What's the difference with not having one, and then just joining the membership just the moment you have a breakdown?

    • +1

      Kicks in after 24hours

    • +2

Usually 24-48 hour waiting period, for that exact reason

  • Does anyone know if this is good in Perth?

I just joined RAC for 2 months ago damn….

  • +2

Am going with RAA..over 5 years that i was with them b4 24/7…they were all very professional…the last guy from 24/7 who came to change 2 tyres…left 2 tyre bolts half loose..made me super angry..
from my experience..yes 24/7 is cheap…but when that times comes..when u actually ever need a good service..thats when you rue not spending that extra $50 p/y to get something better value…
But I understand that won't be for everyone since everyone has different experiences

  • That is more call outs than the motorcycle alliance I am with

  • Is there a wait time for this to be used? What if someone decides to take this cover just when it's needed (on the side of the road) then call the Toe truck? Asking for a friend.

    • +2

From the link: 48 hour commencement period, "For immediate assistance, please call to discuss your options."

  • Cheers..

  • $69 for callout but cost of repair is additional right?

    • +1

It's not a roadside mechanic, they'll jump start a flat battery, change a tire, unlock a door etc, but if it needs anything more serious than that, it's a tow

  • Does it cover Hiace or Coaster for commercial use?

  • Who is the towing handled through?

  • You can sign up to RACQ on the spot if you breakdown + an additional fee, not sure about other state breakdown clubs.

Worth a gamble for some maybe?

  • 100klm towing in regional, arent there plenty of places that are more than 100klm away from a decent mechanic? Its the same with NRMA (I checked).

  • Is it for a single vehicle or does it cover the driver?

I used a mates RACV Gold in the past, all he had to do was say he was driving at the time of breakdown and they came and towed it home.

    • +1

From their T&C. The membership will apply to the vehicle, which must be currently registered and in a roadworthy condition.

  • Very recently looked at roadside options - insurance add-on vs motoring association vs private roadside.
Found the major difference was in trailer/caravan inclusion, people moving, and accommodation.
For private roadside, I found they included non of these and if I did have a breakdown that required towing (occurs majority of breakdowns) then it would cost me a LOT more since I'd have to pay for self/occupants to get home, and a LOT LOT more if I had a trailer on.
Insurance add-on was most cost effective, covering trailer and self/occupant transport too. And only about $15/pa more

  • +1

Where is it discounted to $99 from $121, I can't see it, thank you.

  • Is this one subscription per driver or one subscription per car?

    • +3

Per car. From their T&C. The membership will apply to the vehicle, which must be currently registered and in a roadworthy condition.

  • +1

whats wrong with budget direct for $7 more ?

    • Might be worth the extra $7 and get unlimited callouts!

  • I'm with RACQ, should I ditch them and their $110 annual fee for these guys $69 roadside assistance?

    • Yes, and get 2 years for $110

  • I cannot see anything re multiple cars, is this policy one car only?

    • +1

I think it is, as I read re: if you sell your car, you can transfer the cover to the next owner

  • 2 years $110, even better.

  • What is the cancellation policy if anyone knows….can u get pro-rata refund in case you need to cancel 2 yr plan

  • I'm getting a security warning "Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead" regardless of the web browser I use.
Proceeding anyway returns another message from my ISP "This website has been blocked… We blocked this website because it may contain malicious content and could be harmful to your devices."

Is anyone else also unable to access the site?

  • Seem like a good deal. I paid $210 a year for RACV RA and had to wait 4 hours for the tow truck to arrive even in the metro. They used Nationwide Towing as their contractor. The only good thing is the fuel discount at Ampool which is about $2 each time.
How about free RA if service at Mycar?

  • Just got my car towed after an engine failure.

They arrived about an hour after their ETA but that's okay with me. (NRMA was 6 hours later a few years ago)

    Just paid for itself.
