Max $500 purchase limit for each GC/Flybuys account..

    • I am not sure whether card fees are calculated to 20x times. I think probably yes for flybuys. In other words, nearly 600 points could be lost for five $100 Westfield giftcards.

      • Ya..likely..
Is the 10k flybuys points limit per card category or across all the GC's?

        • Definitely buy 4 per flybuys if you have multiples.

          • @Neoika: Yea, works out to be $500 purchase limit per flybuys account. so you would in turn get $50 Flybuys credit for buying $500 giftcards.

  • no 15% off TCN :(

No, Coles Master GC 10% off either…
maybe they will do it as a black Friday sale similar to last year…I tell you lot of folks are waiting to buy heaps of em…

      • Waiting waiting.

Waiting for the digital Coles Mastercard GC 10% deal… got 30k of HECS to pay off…

  • whats the highest EDR they had for these kind of deals? might wait a lifetime for them instead 💀

    • EDR 20x bonus excludes card fees.

Aldi 10% off excludes card fees.

    • I have $4,000 and they told me that’s the max Kim your allowed to have

  • Can we change this to digital Westfield gift card?

  • Can Westfield eftpos card be used online?

Can we use Westfield eftpos to buy other gc at coles or wws?

    • That's information about that here
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/809818

      • That’s just standard t&c which always says you can’t use it to purchase other gc, isn’t it

        • Seems pretty straightforward

Gift Cards can't be used to purchase other Gift Cards at Coles

          • @spaceflight: I’m asking about the experience not the general t&c that everyone can read. Activ visa has the same t&c restriction on gc purchase, but can be used at the Coles.

            • @li1123k: Do you mean, can this card be used to make general purchases at Coles (ie. buying groceries, food etc and not other GCs)?

              • @AkuroPlays: I’m asking if the Westfield one can be used to purchase gift card at Coles using EFTPOS. I know Activ VISA has t&c not allowing to purchase gift card, but can bypass it via using PayPass at coles

    • +1

These have always been blocked from buying other gift cards at Coles. At one point they were blocked from buying anything at all, even groceries.

      • It must’ve been changed with the recent Coles checkout upgrade, I just found out that I used Westfield EFTPOS card in early 2022 to purchase other gc in Coles. Recent posts also suggested that Perfect EFTPOS card can’t be used at Coles to purchase gc as well which can before.

  • can i used these westfield eftpos cards in any store with an eftpos?

    • Nope.

On the Westfield website, it mentions a rather vague statement:

Spend at participating stores in Australia with eftpos facilities, both within and outside Westfield centres

I am not sure what the "participating stores" actually are, but it is usually up to the merchant as to whether they choose to accept Westfield eftpos gift cards as a payment. Two examples to call out:

      • I tried to use a Westfield eftpos gift card at Officeworks a few months ago to pay for a stick of glue (and that was the only item I was purchasing). I got a Declined - Card Not Accepted error as soon as I swiped the gift card on the EFTPOS terminal.

      • Any merchants using Square terminals will not be able to accept eftpos payments from a card if you swiped the card through the EFTPOS terminal, due to "security reasons".

      • Any merchants using Square terminals will not be able to accept eftpos payments from a card if you swiped the card through the EFTPOS terminal, due to "security reasons".

That article sounds like Square is not accepting/processing an eftpos card transaction via the eftpos network but instead are accepting and processing a debit Visa/MasterCard transaction via their network.

        • If you read a different Square webpage, it is clearer (although it unfortunately uses EFTPOS instead of eftpos):

What types of EFTPOS payments can I accept with Square?

You’ll be able to take Chip and Tap EFTPOS payments with Square's Contactless + Chip Reader. Savings and Cheque account selection will be available when using a Chip EFTPOS card, while Contactless EFTPOS cards will automatically process via the default account on the card with a Tap.

If you insert a physical dual-network debit card (or tap a card saved to your mobile wallet) and you choose to route the payment through the eftpos network instead of the Visa/Mastercard network, Square terminals will process the payment through the eftpos network. I have done this myself a couple of times.

The reason Square terminals will reject the Westfield eftpos gift card is that it is a "swipe only" eftpos card (i.e. it is not a chip enabled card). However, I have had no issues using a "swipe only" Coles Mastercard gift card at Square terminals accepting swipe cards.

          • @WookieMonster: Wait… I don't get it. What's the difference between EFTPOS and eftpos? Punctuation?

          • @WookieMonster: Ignore my previous question about the difference between EFTPOS and "eftpos" (which I now know is a brand name). I'm new to this information!

My real worry is: how soon will "swipe only" eftpos cards be phased out? I read that they are being phased out in favour of chip-based ones, so…

Is Coles giving bonus Flybuys to get rid of these Westfield gift cards because they won't be usable for much longer, as terminals of the future will no longer accept these Westfield "swipe only" cards? Does anyone have a deadline that will affect the validity of these gift cards?

            • @dlee:

What's the difference between EFTPOS and eftpos? Punctuation?

eftpos refers to the eftpos (SAV/CHQ) network operated by eftpos Australia.

EFTPOS is the concept of making payments through electronic funds transfers by using payment terminals and payment cards. This includes Mastercard, Visa, AMEX, eftpos, etc.

The title of this deal really should say Westfield eftpos (not Westfield EFTPOS), but I am being pedantic!

how soon will "swipe only" eftpos cards be phased out? I read that they are being phased out in favour of chip-based ones, so…

I do not know whether eftpos has announced if/when they will stop making magstripes mandatory.

Mastercard have said they will stop making it mandatory for new credit and debit cards to include a magstripe in 2029, but prepaid cards are currently exempt from this deadline. Additionally, this deadline is not necessarily a deadline for when magstripe will stop being supported completely by Mastercard.

Considering how popular swiping still is in some countries, I think it will be a few more years before we need to worry about the usability of swipe-only eftpos cards.

Is Coles giving bonus Flybuys to get rid of these Westfield gift cards because they won't be usable for much longer, as terminals of the future will no longer accept these Westfield "swipe only" cards?

              I do not believe so.

It is just that Square did not originally support eftpos when they first rolled out their terminals in Australia. When they eventually added in support for eftpos a few years ago, they took the opportunity to mandate that all eftpos payments are to only be via insert or contactless, particularly after seeing how contactless was adopted very quickly as the preferred way of presenting a card in Australia.

Swipe-only Mastercard and Visa cards are supported by Square, but that is most likely because swipe payments from Mastercard and Visa cards were quite popular elsewhere in the world when Square originally developed their EFTPOS terminals.

Square is currently the only example of an EFTPOS terminal I can think of where you can swipe a card and cannot send a payment through the eftpos network.

Does anyone have a deadline that will affect the validity of these gift cards?

The Westfield eftpos gift cards I spotted at Coles yesterday expire in 2028.

I used them at Aldi no problems and no fees either.

  • Is there a Westfield $500? If you are buying $100 and paying $5.95, getting $10 in points. That means saving it’s only 3.95%?
What’s the highest value Westfield card?

    • +1

The largest denomination of Westfield eftpos gift cards I have ever seen Coles stock (including the one I checked this morning) is $100.

      • +1

Thanks :) Might be worth to get some to use at Aldi.

      • what the savings for $100 Westfield gc this time?

        • I am actually not sure.

My presumption is that you will earn 2,100 Flybuys points on a $100 Westfield eftpos gift card through this deal, because the 20x Flybuys points booster would apply to the total cost of the gift card ($105.95), rather than just the face value ($100).

If you value 2,000 Flybuys points at $10 (which is the Flybuys Dollars / Flybuys instant discount conversion rate), that means you will get $10.50 worth of Flybuys points through this deal.

In other words, you will need to pay a $5.95 purchase fee, but you will get $10.50 worth of Flybuys points.

          • @WookieMonster: Can someone check my calculations…
For the Westfield cards, since the max bonus is 10,000 pts, if I buy 5 of the $100 cards, I will pay $529.75 in total, including fees ($5.95 x 5).
The base points are 500, plus max bonus 10,000, so total = 10,500 pts = $52.50.
            So, 52.50 out of a $525.75 spending = 9.91% real discount.
            Would that be correct?

(Of course, let's ignore the loss of bank interest by tying up $529.75 in gift cards…:-) but someone will probably mention it and calculate it too…)

            • +1

@dlee: maximum of 10,000 points can be collected per Flybuys account.
20* includes base points, where bonus points is only 19*

              • @Coo: Oh… that's no good… is that confirmed/ for sure? I thought it's base points + 20 x base points.

If so, then the discount would be 9.51%.

            • +1

              @dlee:

              So, 52.50 out of a $525.75 spending = 9.91% real discount.

Not quite. What you are saying is that $52.50 is 9.91% of $529.75. That is true. However, that is not your discount in this case.

You are getting $500 in eftpos gift cards plus $52.50 in Flybuys dollars. So, you are getting $552.50 value by spending $529.75. That is 4.12% discount.

              • @Nelumbo: Thank you for taking the time to explain. That's very clear. The real discount is "Difference (between Value & Cost)" / "Total Value" x100.
Overall, the discount for the Westfield card isn't really that big, after taking into account the normal discount you can get anyway from credit cards like HSBC's (2%).

                • +1

                  @dlee:

Overall, the discount for the Westfield card isn't really that big, after taking into account the normal discount you can get anyway from credit cards like HSBC's (2%).

True, but I bought one today anyway, using my HSBC card. So, I got 6.12% discount. I am going to use it at places where I would have used my HSBC card. It's better than 2% discount.

Thank you for taking the time to explain.

                  No problem :)

                  • @Nelumbo: Ah… did you actually get the 2% from HSBC Advance? I wanted to do that too, but for that rebate to trigger, purchases need to be $99.99 or below, so a $100 Westfield card is already above that (+ the $5.95 fee brings it way over $100).

                    • @dlee:

Ah… did you actually get the 2% from HSBC Advance?

No, I actually have a Global account.

…purchases need to be $99.99 or below

True, so I split the payment at the register (you have to do it at the manned registers, the self-checkouts won't let you split payments when buying gift cards.)

                      • @Nelumbo: Arghh.. I thought that ALL the registers won't allow split payments for gift cards… I didn't realise that at the manned register I can do that… Well, good tip for next time!

Woolies has the 10x points for everyday rewards for the visa giftcards. Similar value?

    • Yes, this deal offers 4.5% discount at most (considering flybuys usually applies base points to 3rd party giftcards, i.e. 21x points), but limited to $100 per card and in-store spend only as the inconvenience.

It seems that getting more Activ Visa is the better way for some, 3.35% discount though.

      • can probably loadup on Activ to buy Westfield EFTPOS…

        • +1

Activ Visa has a hidden spend limit even if Coles hasn't done anything. You may buy a few but not a lot.

  • The Disney+ Gift Card is for new subscriptions only, it can't be used on existing accounts.

  • Why are there so many Fly Buys deals lately? Even for credit card churning/ insurance, suddenly theres so many bonus FlyBuys credit cards deals at the moment.

  • So e.g. $500 Celebration card = 10000 points = $50 voucher and then you can stack Onepass trial at Officeworks = 2500 points.

Overall $62.5 off your next Coles shop = 12.5% off which is not terrible.

  • Is there any difference between the Westfield EFTPOS gift card and the Perfect eftpos gift card in terms of where they can be spent? Looks like the difference is that the merchant must be a participating one for the Westfield one. But that doesn't help much

  • @WookieMonster, am I right in thinking that the risk of getting these cards hacked is very low, if any, given they are in-store use only?

  • +1

    Westfield $100

    105 + 1995 = 2100 pts in total

    (105 x 20 = 2100)

    • These are good for petrol and not hackable.
Going to buy $500 x 2 on seperate cards

Should last me close to 3 months for petrol

Also good for council fees if paying at the counter

      • Is there risk for the last card? As max is 10k points, so 2,100 x 5= 10500 points.

  • Bought the Westfield card

Not accepted at post office , butcher, grocer, market fresh, Woolworths

This is one of the worst cards

Looks can use only in Westfield

The key is do not ask (if I can use it), just swipe it, select saving, enter the PIN.

When you ask it, it means if I can cheat (at the payment) to an attendant.

      • No it says invalid payment

        • +1

OK, it may be not activated yet. As I know from before, it may take several hours if not till the next business day.
