What Would You Say Are The Best Prepaid YEARLY SIM Plans?

I'm looking to switch from my family's Optus account to my own pre-paid yearly sim plan. I've seen Amaysim and Kogan as being probably the best in terms of price per GB, with Amaysim coming out slightly on top with better features (as well as the Optus network which is generally a bit better than Vodafone for most areas.) I've also seen Boost and Felix and a bunch of others that seem generally acceptable.

So what are everyones thoughts and recommendations for cheap yearly pre-paid SIM only plans?

Comments

  • I tend to look for $150 for 180GB. Anything cheaper is good.

Not sure the brand matters for annual plans. Although some give all data up front, and others a small amount per month

I tried Amaysim in Sydney and it was pathetic. My go to choice is Telstra or Boost.

    • +1

Sydney on T4 Train line, Telstra is pathetic, my go to choice is something Vodafone.

And a Boost Cashback sim as second sim cuz why not.

  • +4

I've got Amaysim which was a discounted $90 renewal for a year. Zero complaints so far but I'm a low-data user.

    • Yeah I'm not looking to use a lot of data myself. Was that $90 just for this year on a deal or is that for every year ongoing?

      • Renewal/retention bonus on my wife's account, which I then asked support to match on my account. Otherwise I was still happy to pay the $120 instead since that was still the best deal for me.

There was a 'starter SIM' deal recently for a similar price from Woolies, and apparently there's also some Black Friday deals if you can wait a month, but no guarantees.

        • BF deals should be coming in couple weeks not month I think? That is assuming if amaysim doing half price promo like last year

        • Yeah I might wait to see what black friday deals are going around when the time comes. Might go to a woolworths to see if those deals are still on as well.

      • If you only want unlimited calls and text then amaysim has a $60 yearly plan. It's not on their website but if you sign up to the PAYG plan you can then choose it.

Last time I tried Amaysim it was literally unusable - every time I tried to get data… zilch, worse than dial up.

Even Optus is better - and that's a BIG call. (I hate Optus with a passion).

Kogan Mobile (Vodafone reseller) : https://www.koganmobile.com.au/plans/mobile/

    120GB $120
    200GB $180
    500GB $300

    • +1

I paid $165 for the 500GB data during the end of year sales. Hoping it is available this year as well.

  • Onetel

    • Makes Lachlan and James shed real tears.

Coles Mobile. $129/1y for 120 GB and calls/SMS to 16 countries. Really useful if you call one of those countries often.

    • It was $119 last week. No more?

      • +1

I bought one last night at $119 for 120GB. Good for 365 days but must be activated within a month after purchase.

    • Yeah, but Coles are an Optus reseller.

      Optus??? yeah… naaa…

      • Oh no, Optus is really that bad huh? I actually moved across from Aldi's 365 day prepaid data plan. This Coles card seems to provide a lot more as with $20 extra, you'll get double the data on a normal SIM card (free local/national plus 16 country international calls).

        • Really depends on where you are, Optus is oversubscribed in Sydney where I live and work. Used to be great 5 years ago but not now.

          • @ballistykx: I see. Perhaps it's OK in Victoria. Any comments from users in Victoria?

        • +4

          This comment aged well

          • @zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz: idroid words becoming reality! omg .. we are in the Droids and Sorcerers age

            • +1

              @CyberMurning: @zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I'm going for a job on the Optus marketing team.. I'm going to pitch my idea for a new slogan..

              "Optus??? yeah… naaa… At least we're honest!"

  • Amaysim and Boost are both pretty good. Prices depend on deals and your usage.

    • Amaysim

Perhaps when looking at value on paper.. In real use? It's a no in my experience.

      • I rarely have issues with Amaysim/Optus in Sydney but I believe it depends on where you live and where you go. I've been switching between Boost and Amaysim for years and find the difference negligible. My partner is with Boost now.

Sometimes only Telstra network is available, sometimes only Optus.

I can't really say that one is better than the other for my use.

Also, Amaysim international roaming with package valid for 365 has been pretty amazing and reasonably priced, without having to worry about travel SIMs.

Woolworths Mobile. It's on the Telstra network.

It costs a bit more than the cheapest options at $170 yearly for 120Gb, but works out much cheaper for me when I consider the 10% off monthly Woolworths shop offer it opens up. Also, I always seem to have excess unused data at the end of the year which I can easily sell on OzB classified which brings down my cost even further

    • +1

Yep, only need to have a pre 10% shop of $142 each month to be free phone plan
Easy to do being a family of 5 adults
      .

      • I thought 10pct off is just for one shop per month?

        • +6

          Yes
          142x10%=$14.20 discount, x12 months = $170.40 to offset $170 phone plan
          .

          • @Nugs: Ah sorry forgot the 170$ is for a year. Too bad Coles is much closer to my home

            • +2

@CyberMurning: Yeah but Coles is Optus… That's like using carrier pigeon in a field of hawks and eagles.. It may work sometimes, but not many.

    • +1

From what I see on Woolies website, if you have a dual SIM phone, you could get it even for less. Get 60Gb for $100 phone plan (https://mobile.everyday.com.au/plans/long-expiry-plans) and also get 120Gb data only for $54 (https://mobile.everyday.com.au/plans/sim-only-plans, and on 5G as well!). Total: $154 for 180Gb.

I don't have a dual SIM phone:( I wish Woolies could do an eSIM, I'd totally go for this option.

      • Thanks. But I'm only using 60 to 80gb a year data. It's funny the normal pack is only 4g but data only is 5g

        • but data only is 5g

I'd say that voice is 4G VoLTE and data is capable of 5G (but will still carry on 4G)

      • +1

The $100 plan is for 180 days only. The $170 is where the best value is at.

        • Ah, yes, I missed that part /facepalm/

      • Mate, those are not even close in the realm of cheap prepaid, first one was 6 month, second one was monthly plan which you can get similar data from Boost for free.

        • +2

you Get 10% off your shopping once a month. For me it ends up free and I even make money as i save $350 year. Have little think about it.

          • +1

@ajkaos: No, you get slugged if you consider 10% discount at ww is decent. Anything not going half-price is considered overpriced at WW, so unless you can stack up 10% on top of the half-price it's not worth it. And you can never get all the stars aligned to make that once a month trip worthwhile.
Best is to sign up to ww to get 10% discount and port your number out before the next renewal so you can get 10% a month and cheaper mobile service somewhere else.

        • Yeah, see it now, my bad. Bummer, I knew it was too good to be true :(

      • Yeah agreed that would make it even better. At least my data travel one is eSIM.

      • +2

Woolies DO do eSIM, there's an option in the app to let you switch if you've activated a regular SIM. Or you can just take the eSIM option on their website to start with. https://mobile.everyday.com.au/mobile-phone/esim

    • +1

I second this, I’ve tried most of them and Woolworths Mobile is the best for families or couples even. Actually even if it’s just one person it’s still better I believe. I’m not even going to bother switching it’s that good.

  • +3

Catch? Got the sim for like $80

  • "Best" is situational. I find answering the following questions is usually needed to narrow down the best yearly prepaid service (assuming you're not firstly constrained by a maximum cost):

    • how much data do you need at minimum each year?
    • does a particular network have poor reception at your home/work/other locations you spend lots of time at?
    • do you travel regionally a lot? (Telstra network may be mandatory if so)
    • do you need included international calls?
    • do you need international roaming? Value of roaming plans differ between providers
    • True, every post here is unique to their respective situations.

      • Just like finding girl friend… Your mate hot young cute gf maybe not suitable for you

        • Depends how much you like your mate.

  • Boost Mobile

  • suspect there will be deals at the end of November with black Friday?

  • So you say in your original post

the best in terms of price per GB

    And then in your reply

I'm not looking to use a lot of data myself

So i would suggest Catch 60GB/$89 a year if you are asking for a deal.

But you are asking what we think is the best, so i go with what mugsy

  • +4

I found Catch 60GB for $89 a year to be really good. Leave the auto-renewal option off and they'll likely SMS you an offer for the second year when it is less than a month to expiry.

    • yeh..thats seems best deal..

      • i feel coles for $99, same 60GB is better with international call included if you need them of course.

  • For yearly prepaid plans between 100 and 200GB I'm happy paying 1 dollar per GB (providers on optus or telstra).

  • +3

For me, its the Boost $200, which is now $230. However you can always find it for around $180 if you look around.

The reason it is best for me, is the fact that it uses the full Telstra network… which is essential when you live out in the country in my experience. Both Vodafone and optus networks are shit around 100-150kms away from Adelaide and i imagine even worse where i am now - 800kms away from Adelaide.

    • Plus overseas calls allocation.

  • Boost Boost Baby…

  • Vodafone as their prepaid includes eSIM and 5g. Want eSIM for my main number so I can use my physical SIM for travel/work/data and looking at 5g as I find some areas have slow 4g but fast 5g.

    • but voda prepaid 365days plan is $250? too much

      • +1

I got it a few weeks ago for $150, must have gone up since then.

      • voda always on sales so check out for woolies/coles..

  • i'm kind of same page…low data user 120GB more than enough and looking at text/calls more than data at cheap price..seems some have on sales like Catch Connect about $89 and i think amaysims going to have half price around $70..there's many others at $120.

use to stack sims card but too much and headace, pretty much for heavy data users so stick with anything less than $10 per month.

    • yep i still hesitate to join the jumping sims club, i think $60-80 a year is a good price to have a worry free mind. waiting for black friday deal come on…..lucky my boost exp end of november otherwise will get $99 coles 60GB

  • Currently with Amaysim 60Gb yearly plan (Optus) $99 which is more than enough but need to change over to Telstra based as no reception when out in country which is a regular thing these days..
Can someone suggest what the equivalent Telstra (or Telstra MVNO) with similar data and unlimited calls would be? just doesn't seem to be anything similarly priced or spec'ed .. thks

  • +1

Boost Mobile - because it has the most coverage in Australia on the Telstra network.
Just sick of the black spots I get on the Vodafone, Optus network with Amaysim.
Just find out which network all the other providers are on.

  • Can you use discounted woolies gift cards to buy the $170 recharge vouchers?
