are they suitable for eating, flavour and texture wise ?

    • +5

They're edible, and not bred for their flavour etc. If you find them any tasty, probably depends on how fussy you are.

For 10c, could just roast some and see?

@garage sale:Carving Pumpkins were on sale last year after halloween, I think around 5C or so at my local Coles. The store manager was relocating the Carving Pumpkin pallet near the door, so I asked him are they edible, he was not sure and also told me that last year they had to throw hundreds of carving pumpkin in the bin after halloween as there were no takers. I was bit shocked to hear that if one store is throwing away hundreds of pumpkin, how many would get thrown away throughout Australia just in the name of halloween, so I decided to give it a try and got a couple pumpkin for $5.

As per my experience they are definitely edible but bear in mind they are not like you normal pumpkin. These are bit harder than the normal pumpkin and has more strong smell to it. When we made soup out of it, we could taste the difference than your normal pumpkin soup, I had to add more of garnish(garlic, pumpkin seeds and spring onion) to level the strong taste. The next batch we decided to roast these pumpkin with olive oil and garnishing with oregano and served with butter, it was literally tasty, I couldn’t tell the difference. So the next time we made pumpkin soup, we roasted it first and later we made soup out of it. This time it was creamier and more easier on the palate.

I am planning to get couple carving pumpkins this year too and thinking of making pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffin, pumpkin cannelloni and spiced pumpkin granola. I hope it helps.

        Thanks for sharing your experience!

      • What about gnocchi?

        • +11

sure, I guess you could carve them, but the neighbours probably won't be impressed by putting 3 or 4 carved gnocchis on the front porch

I thought the whole point of a carving pumpkin was they were easier to cut into as our normal ones are too hard? Just looked it up, maybe it's just an Aussie supermarket scam……..
"What is the difference between the two? Carving pumpkins have thinner skins. This makes them easier to slice into. They also have less guts on the inside, and the guts are more grainy and far stringier. This makes them easier to clean before carving."

      • thks, i was going to roast ..tend to use roasted pumpkin for most dishes as less water and nicer flavour, even my soup is roasted pumpkin.

  • any good for composting

      Ask Dreamworld employees.
Last year they had them all over the park and left till they rotted in the hot sun.

        Maintenance isn't their strong point.

        • ironically it wasnt for many of them around there at the time.
Hopefully this has pushed the bar back to where it should have been to acoid these type of things.

Actually quite surprised that we can obtain 1kg of edible (and probably quite nutritious) substance for just $0.1……

    • @charmandad: Yes they are. Carving out health benefits of pumpkins

If only they weren’t sold for $3.90 per kilo last week.

They need find a balance. $1/kg and they would have exhausted their stock.

Yep this is more indicative the shops just gouge the pricing for Halloween

Last time i got one for the family i swear it was over $10 after it was paid p/kg
