USB C Hub That Works Reliably and Doesn't Break The Bank?

Looking for a USB C hub (for my MS Surface) where I can connect USB C, HDMI, USB (to connect a monitor, a hard drive, a wireless mouse, and a keyboard). I had bought an Anker but it doesn't work reliably for my wireless keyboard. I have looked at previous posts (where the ugreen 7-in-1 was recommended). Is this still the go-to or is there something else/better? Thanks

  • I had bought an Anker but it doesn't work reliably for my wireless keyboard.

Does the wireless keyboard use a separate usb receiver? If that is the case, then you'll probably get similar issue with other cheap usb c hubs as well. Would your problem be solved if you upgraded to a bluetooth keyboard?

    • it's one receiver for both mouse and keyboard. Will that pose a problem with any cheap hub?

Wireless keyboards/mice using 2.4GHz are notorious for signal interference with USB 3.0 devices since the data signal is just close enough in speeds to interfere. Your best solution is a short USB 2.0 cable from the hub to the dongle and that'll fix all the issues.

The hub itself is likely fine, and a new one won't fix the problem.

        • Awesome advice, thank you! I have no techie knowledge whatsoever 😆

I use it for my PC https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0855L9MXY?ref_=pe_19115062_429…

It works reasonably well (power, 2K video, USB). Once or twice it didn't so I had to unplug everything and plug it back in before it would work again.

    • Thanks. Have you also connected a hard drive? I heard they need too much power for many hubs to work reliably.

        Yes.

But I think power issue depends what power source is feeding the hub

        • Thesurface is feeding the hub with power, no other power source.

          • @jamamamama: Shouldn’t the hub feed the surface?

            • @JimB: It's just a basic hub that isn't connected to a power outlet and doesn't charge like a power bank. https://bitly.ws/ZemJ
Sorry, am I confusing or misunderstanding something?

              • @jamamamama: Ok.

Just confirming does your surface have USB C?

                • @JimB: Correct, only one ingoing USB C port

@jamamamama: Get a USB C hub like the one I linked above.

Connect the power adapter into the USB C hub.

The USB C hub will then power the Surface, USB drive, HDMI and other devices.

Your Anker looks like the old school USB hubs.

One of my kids has been using a NOVOO one from Amazon for a surface laptop for over a year, and it works fine.

I've been using this for the last two years with the same requirements you have. Other than sometimes having to plug it in again to recognise my USB monitor it hasn't had any issues.

If you're not moving the device around, it would be worth considering a USB-C or Thunderbolt Dock.
