  • Anyone know if the health insurance trick can be done for this offer as well?

    • wording sounds like it. but don't think their as many tiers of cover to really benefit, when compared to the health insurance.

    • If it is the same one I did a few years ago its not a cheap trick …was still worth it I think

      • So it worked back then?

        • Yep but you did pay a premium for it. Not like the points were free …. paid more than my normal premium to get them. Tried to leverage the premium as much as possible during the period…not just from a Q-points point of view

          • @MonkeyMagic1977: I was looking at upping the premium around the 60 day mark. Then cancelling it once I get the point. But not sure if it's worth it

            • @nightelves: Check the fine print …I think they have changed the payout terms a little from when I did it.

              • @MonkeyMagic1977: What if you paid in monthly instalments? I'm thinking to do that.

                • @nightelves: Health insurance is usually paid monthly anyhow. THats what I did back at the time….Qantas Health Insurance is just very pricey in order to get the points as you needed to have top hospital & top extras

    • I just got a quote for my car, and there is no monthly option, only an annual payment.

      • There is. Just select the up and down arrow where the yearly price is.

  • What is the trick?

cancel after getting points?pay max 3 months of premia…

    Minimum annual premium $1550 😬

Is this a common amount? Interested to know…

    • Depends on the value of your car if you take out full comp….guessing you would need to have something valued around $60k to be that premium, or just a really lousy driving history

      • +2

$60k value? Most insurers value my car at $35k (market value) and my annual premium is usually $1300. This year all quotes are coming at $1500 plus.

        • Might be location or driver history differences. Mine was $1100 with Aami for $45k agreed. Alot of the others were sky high like you mention

    • if you switch to monthly…pay approx 130/m for atleast 2-3months to hopefully bag the 50k points…and then switch to another provider..

      • Yep possibly worth it if you can cancel after few months…never done this with car/home insurance

    • Tesla insurance is usually $2000+

      • For model Y?

        • Any Tesla model

    • +1

      Short answer can be yes.

My 5 year old Corolla came up as $1100. So I can see a SUV easily coming in around that.

      • Crumbs

    • thought this is the normal pricing these days, i guess they forgot to change the rule, better keep this T&C

    • Just renewing my car insurance at $570 for the year.

Previous insurer quoted $1000 for the renewal…

Same offer for their Home Insurance as well

  • Did a quote and pricing wasn't as obscene as I thought it would be

    • Compared to?

  • My car is worth about 3k, put in street parking and cover for any age driver it came to about $1500 (!) , change to monthly which put it in the 50k points range , then adjust excess until you are down to about $130/month

    • +1

I don't think you are their target market. I got the same rate on a 60k car

      • I was just showing that you can bump your premium with some easy options.

  • So what's the trick here, change to monthly payment around $130, get the points after 2 months and switch?

    • It looks that way. Im paying via credit card rather than direct debit also so I dont need to overpay. It may also mean you can hold off for a late payment on the third month if necessary.

  • Anyone know if you can get the cheapest premium on this, bump it up and get the maximum point?

    • It states: "Points will be awarded based on your premium after 60 days." So it should work. Unless there's some trigger needed at the start of the policy too. Doub anyone will know unless they've done it.

  • Reading the two PDS documents, it looks like they offer pro rata refunds if you cancel early, minus a $40 early cancellation fee. Assuming that you obtain a premium of $1,550 and receive the points more or less 60 days after joining, the total cost of the 50,000 points should be ~$300 which isn't bad at all.

    • The early cancellation fee of $40 where did you see that and also is that for the annual fee or the monthly as well.

      • +1

Page 4 of PDS Part B:

        Early Cancellation $40.00

Page 20 of Part A has the cancellation rules:

        Cancelling the policy

By you – You may cancel the policy at any time. If you cancel this policy within 21 days of the purchase or renewal date and no claim is made ('cooling-off period') you will receive a full refund of the premium you have paid.

If you cancel the policy outside the cooling-off period, we will refund any premium you have paid for the unused portion of your policy, less the early cancellation fee as shown in PDS Part B and less any government taxes and charges. We will not refund any amount of $1 or less.

If you pay your premium by instalments, any premium still owing at the time of cancellation must be paid to us.

        • So I'm guessing if you stick with the premium for 60 days then you won't be charged the early cancellation fee. Also if you are paying monthly you would avoid this fee?

          • @nightelves: I'm not sure. I think the risk with the monthly instalments is that you might have to pay for a full third month ($130+) if the points aren't credited quickly enough.

            • @VantageXL: I'm looking at the home content only and upgrading full comp on the last few days. Works out a lot cheaper.

        • Wait I'm reading this again and it's saying outside the 21 cooling off period then you'll be charged the $40 early cancellation fee?

  • Is a start date of late December okay as long as bought before the offer end date of 5th December?

    • You can buy up to 60 days in advance, and this offer expire on 5th December* (*unless Qantas withdraw earlier)

  • Whats the value of 50k qantas points these days?

    • I value them at 1c per point, so about $500.

  • I don't seem to find info about points on renewal of existing policy, does anyone know anything about it? Thanks

    • +1

No chance. This is a new customer sign on bonus

      • Thanks. Also spoke to someone from Qantas to confirm that just now…
