Thoughts on Bankwest Qantas Everyday Transation Debit Card for Overseas ATM Withdraw?

Got this card last week for the bonus qantas points. I saw in an email sent by Bankwest today that the card attracts no ATM fee or foreign transaction fees when used overseas.
I have a planned trip to Japan next yr In April. Currently hold a Citibank Plus debit card (which will be useless from End of March next yr as NAB will disable all function associated with the Citi acc). No idea what feature the new NAB account would offer.

Has anyone used the bankwest debit card for withdraw overseas? Are there certain ATM branches in Japan that do not charge the ATM operator fees with the card? Any suggestion for an alternative debit card for withdrawing overseas?

TIA.

  • Debit & Credit Cards with No International Fees

    As for Citibank Plus -

As part of the changes, you will receive a notice of changes, your NAB branded account details, and a NAB debit card for each Citi branded account you have that currently has a Citi branded debit card. We will give you notice before we move your funds to your NAB branded account.

While there will be some changes to your Citibank Plus Transaction Account, the essential features, including interest rates and product fees and charges, will remain the same.

    • Thanks for the reply!
I did read the post and the "changes" to the Citi plus account. However, previously I was able to avoid paying ATM operator fees with Citi because I used the Citi group ATM overseas. Completely fee free, which was amazing. But. I guess there will no longer be a way to avoid ATM operator fees when I am overseas with NAB or Bankwest cards. Such a shame.

    • Thanks, it wasn't clear if it would continue to work (free International ATM/Transaction fees) post move to NAB.

    • Apart from Citi being Mastercard and NAB being VISA which can affect some overseas ATM charges, I can't see NAB giving us the NAB Platinum Visa Debit card for no monthly fee. We will likely be offered the regular NAB Visa Debit card, which has a 3% fee on international transactions.

      • The communication from NAB seems clear-

They will issue a NAB debit card and product fees and charges will remain the same.

  • +1

I am Taipei now. Tap and go works perfectly. No overseas transaction fee. Good mastercard fee. Haven't tried the cash withdrawal yet but am expecting the same. No fee other than local atm fee.

    • I am Taipei now.

      Hi Taipei

      Why the name change?

    • Great! We will be making short stop in Taiwan next yr as well.
I plan to use the CBA credit card for card purchases (no foreign transaction fee). Just looking for the best card for ATM withdrawal.

  • Used the Macquarie Debit Mastercard in Japan and Korea in September.
Great app interface. Leverages Mastercard rates for FX and no transaction fee for card transactions.

Regarding withdrawing cash in Japan - apparently at 7/11 no local ATM fee for Mastercard or up to 220 yen fee if using Visa
    (Didn't try this out)

    • Yes that's correct. No fee at all on the Macquarie card at 7/11 atm's. We also tried our ING and it charged the 220 yen fee that ING no longer refunds like they used to.

  • Have used Bankwest Qantas debit card for ATM withdrawal overseas (Taiwan). I got a better FX rate than my friend who used a Revolut card immediately before I made my withdrawal.
I had an issue with withdrawing at one ATM as it asked what account to use, I think I tried both "savings" and "cheque" which didn't work. Tried a different ATM where but there was an option for "default" that ended up working.
Have used Citibank Plus with no issues in Japan at Seven bank ATMs which are in all 7/11s (very handy as they are everywhere) and no ATM fee.

    • Thanks for the tips on ATM account selection.
I wonder why people rave about Revolut cards for ATM withdraw. Seems like a travel card with a lot of limitations.

    • Thanks for the tip. I selected default and it's all good. Cathay United Bank ATM. No fee.

    Thoughts on Bankwest Qantas Everyday

How often to Qantas currently fly to the West Bank ?

  • There were some issues using the Bankwest Qantas card in ATMs in Korea but didn't know if it was a Korean bank issue.
