  • Thanks OP, from experience does anyone know if the 2 card cap for variable load is for the day only right and I can return next day and buy another 2 on the same Everyday rewards card? [assuming stock is still there lol]

    • +1

Yes, that should be the case.

For variable cards where you choose the amount to load, limit of 2 cards per day per rewards member in a single transaction.

I cannot say from personal experience because I have never done it before, but I think you should be fine.

      • +1

Can confirm it works - can buy up to 7 cards per ER card daily (5 fixed, 2 variable). Bought some yesterday and today.

        • aren't the fixed one only $100 max? if so, are you not net negative then?

          • +1

@maverick1: Yes, I haven't seen any fixed load cards >$100. No, I'm not net negative because the targeted offers on my bank card outweigh the activation fees.

  • What's the online shopping card?

Green Activ variable is excluded whish is what would have saved some monies. Otherwise activation mainly kills the deal.

    • Where does it say the Green Activ variable card is excluded from this deal?

      • +2

excluding the listed Visa Activ Variable Gift Cards ( Green, Balloons, Fashion, Flowers, Night Out and Tradie & DIY),

It's also not on the banner photo which usually means not includedn

        • Missed that, thanks!

        • I wonder if a karen will do the lawyer comma trick, when you hear lawsuits and billions lost on a comma is usually before an and

There is no card named "Night Out and Tradie & DIY"

          therefore two become eligible
          Night Out ,
          and Tradie & DIY

Disclaimer not substitute for legal advice just amusing reminder to cross every t , but most importantly every comma

But the Green one confuses me in store it doesn't explicitly state phrase Green beyond its packaging shading.
          It is the Green packet?

Or is It a totally different category card for environmentally trades and services that they don't stock.

          • @cski: It's recycled green waste turned into a card

            • @abs898: If i plant it will it biodegrade into a flourishing money tree

  • Can these be cards be used just as normal vanilla gift card?

  • thought the best deal was 20x ?

  • hopefully this doesn't trigger cash advance for CBA - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/808329

    • Shouldn't.

Should come up as a regular Woolworths transaction under whatever merchant category supermarkets are under.

    • do in store able to use paypal?

  • Dammit, I just paid my PAYG installment!

(oh, it's blackhawk, I don't think you can use these for ATO anyway)

  • Time to pay my Optus Pixel 8 Pro plan cancellation charge

  • Thanks op I wonder why it took so long to post? Giving the experts a running head start I guess l@l

    • This deal may not be attractive enough for the experts to post

      • pull the trigger now or hold for Coles' 10% off VISA/MC?

        • hopefully that coles offer comes soon…
looking at the T&C of the existing offer for Coles digital MC sold online it seems the online version of the deal will be sometime next year….

"No purchase Fee on $100 and $250 digital Coles Mastercard’s. Excludes $50 Coles Mastercard. Offer available from 28/08/23 9am. Offer ends 31/1/24 5pm"

        • The coles 10% is a better deal. I purchased a Woolworths gift card once where they offered 10x the value in points when buying from the Woolworths gift card site and never received it and the support people claimed no transaction and did not help any further. I think though this may be better because it’s instore only. In any case not a fan of these bonus points as you can’t use it to pay electric bills or rates etc.

      • Actually it’s the other way around lol

10x Everyday Rewards points on Activ Visa gift cards
This offer is quite complicated so reads the terms carefully!
Runs from Wed 1 Nov to Tue 7 Nov 2023 and is only available in-store at Woolworths and Woolworths Metro.
The purchase limits for this promotion vary depending on which gift cards you buy:
For cards with a fixed value (e.g. “$50”, “$100” etc), the limit is five cards per day which can be purchased across multiple transactions.
For variable load cards where you choose the amount on the gift card (e.g. “$50-500”, the limit is two cards per day and they must be purchased in a single transaction each day.
The only cards worth buying in this promotion are the variable load Activ Visa Online Shopping, Luxury, Travel & Explore, Petrol & Auto and Gaming as you can load up to $500 on each of these cards and use them essentially wherever Visa cards are accepted (there are a small number of exclusions such as gambling, ATMs, payments to the ATO etc).
Whilst these particular cards have $7.95 purchase fees, the points you earn more than offset this cost. If you bought two $500 cards (the maximum you can buy each day), you would essentially be paying $15.90 in fees to earn 5,000 Qantas points (a cost per point of just 0.32 cents).

Saw this on facebook. i guess these can be used anywhere visa is accepted even for outside the categories it mentions? Except ATO. Anyone tried it before?

All the Activ Visa gift cards in this deal (except the Pets & Vets gift card) are functionally just regular Activ Visa gift cards with slightly different branding, and the Activ Visa gift card website says this too. For example, I have used a Gaming gift card to pay for parking at a parking meter that uses MCC 7523 (Parking Lots, Parking Meters and Garages), which does not seem to be related to gaming at all if you ask me… I talk about the restrictions of regular Activ Visa gift cards here if you are interested.

The Pets & Vets gift card for sale at your local Woolworths is most likely still the version that is limited to specific MCCs. If so, my guess is that type of gift card is still restricted to vet- and pet-related MCCs. If you are wondering what the last list of permitted MCCs were, it was:

      • Veterinary Services (0742)
      • Farm Management Services (0763)
      • Pet Shop, Pet Foods, Supplies Stores (5995)
      • Pet Insurance (single purchase, not available for installment/recurring payments) (6300)
  • lol more questions - could someone please clarify which cards are specifically excluded from this promotion such that we don’t mistakenly pick up the wrong one.

The list says: Green, Balloons, Fashion, Flowers, Night Out and Tradie & DIY

    • Green - Isn’t the Green one also pictured in the flyer above?
    • Fashion (PINK)
    • Night Out (Black
    • Tradie (Dark Green with drill pictured)
    • Flowers (light brown – but this is eGift only I suppose so not a reason to worry?)
    • Balloons (Sky Blue – with the balloon lol)
      • Thanks, I guess the big one to watch out for is the green one! Last time I had gone to Woolies, I'm sure I saw the green ones [variable + fixed] in abundance. Buying them will not give the bonus points hence a loss!

    • Variable gift cards listed are excluded, not the fixed ones

    • +6

FreePoints has a handy graphic that explains which gift cards are included in this deal (and also specifies which variable load denominations are included too).

Btw, the Flowers gift card is sold in a physical version.

      • I first spotted the light brown version for sale at BIG W late last year.

      • I spotted both the light brown version and pastel blue version for sale at Kmart earlier this month.

      • I spotted the pastel blue version for sale at Woolworths on the weekend.

Now I think about it, I am not entirely sure whether the pastel blue version is actually called a "Flowers" gift card…

      • +1

Thanks WookieMonster, essentially just gonna steer clear of those cards not in the variable load list of the graphic. Swear to god, would have otherwise bought them Green variable load cards which are lying in abundance at my local Woolies.

      • The Birthday and Congrats variable Cards are not in the exclusion list from Woolworths T&C, but are excluded in the freepoints graphic…
I think I will stick to the T&C

        • +3

That is likely because Woolworths does not actually sell the variable denominations for Birthday and Congrats gift cards.

I have never seen Woolworths sell them (and I checked four Woolworths stores on the weekend and another earlier today). @VantageXL also could not find any variable denominations for Birthday and Congrats gift cards at Woolworths recently.

I am happy for you to prove us wrong though!

Can the ' Travel & explore or the Luxury' card be used to pay utilities and council rates?
Has anyone tried it and it worked?

    • -1

won't work, they've all got the different Merchant Category Codes (MCC), that's why they set the exclusion.

      • First comment of low quality unfortunately.

        • +1

Sorry, I apologized, after keep attempting, it worked.

  • Hey guys can you buy activ visa and then buy the coles online mastercard ? That way you can use for ATO

  • -2
On the $500 card, your profit is $17.05, that's 3.35% of profit.

Have to say, the calculation is incorrect :)

    Profit is 25/507.95 = 4.92%

    Or 24/507.95 = 4.72%. (as 25 woolies money worth 24 AUD)

    • -2

      Sorry, negged.

      • As a bargainer, got to be precise on the profit, why don't you admit mistake being pointed out?

        • +2

You didn't realize that $7.95 is the money spent for nothing, of no value.

Hence the difference of 1.57% in your calculation.

            • @videlity: Use oranbuy’s formula, there's saving on the $50 denomination. You can buy some.

            • @oranbuy: @oranbuy - I'm sorry to interrupt but you're leading this discussion wrongly! (hence I've also negged).

OP is right. Profit rate is 3.36%, discount (or as I like to see this is Woolies cashback) rate is 4.92%.

              Profit % = ( Revenue - Expense ) / Expense
              = (($500 + $25) - 507.95) / 507.95
              = 3.36%

The value of this deal to me is substantially higher as I'm making other side gains with the purchases but at base, its just 3.36.

          • +1

            @Neoika: Yes, now I realize

I usually calculate how much discount, 1-507.95/525

  • @WookieMonster as part of the last 10x EDR deal on Activ cards I bought five $100 Visa PrePaid Gift Cards and fully used a $200 and $100 ShopBack Supermarket Card as partial payment (remainder on HSBC Everyday Global). The Gift Cards - FAQ wiki page suggests that this shouldn't have been possible. What do you think happened? Do you think there has been a policy change, or do you think this was a bug, or just unpredictable in general?

    • Someone reported in late September 2023 that they were automatically blocked from using a Shopback Supermarket Visa gift card from purchasing a Perfect eftpos gift card at Woolworths.

If Woolworths blocked Shopback Supermarket Visa gift cards from paying for Perfect eftpos gift cards, past experience tells me it is almost certain that they have also blocked it from paying for Activ Visa gift cards.

      • +1

I am pretty sure they have blocked all cards that reports their type as "Visa Prepaid" from buying non restrictive giftcards.

    • any benefit to buy $100 card with $5.95 fee?

      • don't do it…No!

  • On the $500 card, your profit is $17.05, that's 3.35% of profit.

why not bring the discount up to 5.35% by using HSBC and tapping under $100 each time like a mad person

    • bcos you cant do split payment for gift cards

      • +1

You can. I just did 30 seconds ago.

        • any limits to the number of split tenders? Can I split a $500 purchase into 5x $99 + 1x $5? [count = 6]

          • @nsingh21: I'm aiming for 11

          • +1

@nsingh21: I just did 10 before reaching $1000 limit which is the max taps a day

            • @Poor Ass: What did you do after that?

              • @aaron3: On the 11th tap they blocked my card for suspicious activity lol and I paid with another card

                • @Poor Ass: Once upon a time a cashier at JB Hifi asked me to show the card I was using on my mobile wallet during a split transaction. She only saw 1 card linked and said that's "fraud". You cannot tap the same card twice for 1 transaction. I laughed and walked out, she didn't realize on Google Wallet it takes 1 swipe to change accounts and cards.

                  • +3

@nsingh21: Some people say the most stupidest shit and have no clue

During the Officeworks Ultimate GC swap to other GCs pandemic (RIP WE ARE ALL SINNERS). I had this chick asked to see the card I was paying with (it was an Ultimate card on Google Pay) and she caught me. She then said did you know it's illegal and you could be fined $30000 for buying with a gift card with a gift card…. It was pure gold the shit that came out of her mouth

The $30000 fine is actually for stores that weren't complying with gift card rules

                    • +1

@Poor Ass: Haha, there's so many such examples. Pro tip - setup 2 Google accounts on GPAY. Link your credit/bank debit card to 1, and gift cards to another. Whenever anyone asks you to show, do a quick swipe on top right to instantly swap accounts and the linked cards, show them the card, then quick swipe back again onto the GC before tapping on the terminal.

Edit: yes, could link both cards onto the same Google account but if they look too closely onto your phone, they might notice the GC sitting right beside it.

Also as a caution - I never link GCs onto my primary Gmail as other people have commented here that they risked account ban. I've personally never had any PayPal or Google accounts banned from using (or abusing GCs) but then some people maybe more wild than I.

                      • @nsingh21: i'm sure all the GC that could be obtained at a high discount has already been banned from purchasing other gift cards

nah no funny business they want to see the whole process…. if you don't want to proceed you just have to walk out

what GCs do you like to swap to?

                • @Poor Ass: Same I think - 11th tap of the physical card was declined (can't remember if there was a specific message on the POS machine). Tapping the Google Wallet version of the same card worked as the 11th total tap.

                  • @aaron3: something like see bank issuer

oh yeh I got to try that tapping with phone

      • ha you must be thinking of Coles

        • Some coles don’t let u tap more than once for gift cards when I was using the hsbc card, I had to go to another coles to be able to do that, but it also could be the staff that doesn’t let u.

          • @FujiFruit: that's why you never split card at coles they always send you up to front desk

pretty sure most of them red flag ya more than not

  • I tried paying strata at Aus Post with these cards, the tran kept declining,
Apple pay didn't work so had to insert/swipe the card. Tried few times with different cards but it kept saying declined - Code 40. Does anyone know what that means? Have they put some sort of block/patch?

    • I just came back from AUspost and they said, they don't take prepaid cards, only Debit or Credit based on what you are paying for.

My strata is via DEFT, so next time when I see the EFTPOS deal, I might give that a crack. But I still reckon they will be declined due to being a prepaid card.

      • +1

Mine is via DEFT too…I know the staff doesn't let you use these cards, you just have to right person who let's you pay using these cards, I used the Activ EFTPOS GC last month and it went through w/o any issues but these one's are specifically getting declined…

        • Alright I might try again. Her system said EFTPOS only at auspost but she kept saying you can still use a debit card.

          Might try a different location.

          • +1

@abs898: Yep, give it a go…I had to select savings when paying via these cards - only 2 options appeared on the screen - chq and savings…maybe that's why these cards cant be used…as they probably need to processed as credit?…I don't know…just guessing here…
Also. these cards can be added to mobile wallet so staff really can't see the card used, but when I tried via apple pay it asked to insert the card…

            • @maverick1: Have you tried paying on the DEFT portal, fees is down to 0.4% there? I tried with Vanilla card and that was straight up rejected.

              • @abs898: I have tried it today with these card, it worked for me. But I just paid with one card!

                • @tangible: Thanks for confirming. Did you just select savings at Auspost?

                  • +1

@abs898: I paid my strata using the DEFT portal.. there is 0.4% surcharge!

                    • @tangible: Cheers! Good one, because Vanilla definitely keeps getting knocked back. I will grab some Activ today and see how I go.

Since these aren't on 10%, I reckon should be easy to find in store.

              • +1

@abs898: not yet but these cards will get declined where 3DS verification is needed.
I tried on ATO - declined, tried buying some digital coles MC - declined.
for online they usually work for merchants which allow Paypal payments…

Update - thanks mate worked on the DEFT website…

                • @maverick1: easy, good to know Activ works on DEFT portal

                  • @abs898: @maverick1 @tangible, thanks both. Picked up $500 to test, didn't work at Auspost, the lady said show me your card as I tried to pay on tap and she didn't let me swipe it by saying you can't pay bills with GC.

Worked on DEFT website with a 0.4% surcharge.

Confirming Vanilla doesn't work on DEFT but Activ does

                • @maverick1: DEFT blocked my online account today for using 3 different cards

                  • @abs898: oh no…I used 2 cards on Wed and used 1 just now…all seems to be ok…
is there a number you could call to get the a/c unblocked?it must be due to payment fraud detection..

                    • @maverick1: Yeah I will call on Monday. I reckon because instead of my name in card holder spot I just entered Gift card recepient as per the GC. Should have put my name lol

That's a what I am assuming it's fraud detection, but no email.

  • I don't understand - why would anyone be interested in this whatsoever, if even buying a $500 card nets you a 3.35% profit margin?

    • +1

It saves on processing fees at quite a few places that don't accept Amex. You can offload your expenditure here, even if you are only profiting 3%, you also saving 1-1.5% surcharge in Amex. So the net savings increase

      • Yes exactly this.

      • -1

        Most people don't use amex

Prob good for rewards and cashback tho

    • +2

I used them paying for my strata and other bills.. it saved some money here…

    • +2

if you have a bill to pay which is due in next couple of days and you don't have access to other discounted cards like the ones sold by Coles…then instead of paying via your CC you are slightly better of paying using these GC's.
The profit margin can vary depending on your best use case - for me I convert these to QFF for not flying biz (faux pas as some will say) but for flying international economy which for past couple of years has had ridiculous cash price or sell them on for 1.15/1.2c/pt.

  • Can you pay your Rates online with these cards? Anyone tried for Brisbane - Qld?

    • See my comment below

  • Does this: "for variable cards where you choose the amount to load, limit of 2 cards per day per rewards member in a single transaction."

…mean that if we want to buy 2 cards, we must buy it in one transaction to get the bonus?

    Anyone tried more than that?

    • +1

You have to buy both variable load cards in the one transaction, yes. If the checkout won't let you add 2x $500 cards, try loading one with $499 or $499.99 as there is often a $1,000 limit (curiously, it doesn't seem to matter that the purchase fees will still bring the transaction total over $1,000).
