Are these just a massive scam or are they actually better than a high quality $400 bagged vacuum cleaner?

Or just paying for decent cordless power?

    • +2

      Paying for decent cordless power

    • +12

People that say u r paying for a decent cordless power are usually the ones never owned a Dyson because of the price tag.

      • +5

Have owned three. They are decent enough but nothing special. The Apple of vacuums.

        • +1

Own led a v8 and currently have a v10, both bought new and echo this. They’re a great corded vacuum but a decent corded one leaves it for dead

    • +2

The ladies will be all over you as soon as you bought this

      • +3

I have a Dyson corded vacuum (one of the Dyson ball ones) and a family member has the V15 detect.

I’ve used the V15 a lot while staying at their house - it’s obviously much more convenient for general cleaning of dust and hair on wood floors - because you can just grab and start vacuuming very quickly. But it’s terrible for things like cleaning cars and also not very effective on carpets.

The corded Dyson has more power and better suited for different purposes, but obviously much more of a hassle to have to navigate different rooms and areas with the cord.

        • Have you used the V15 with the 'Fluffy Cleaner Head', or only the normal head?

          • @ilikeit: Yes I believe so, family member does have the alternate head anyway. When I used it it seemed a hassle to change the head for going over rugs and small bits of carpet in a predominantly hardwood floor house

            • @Hamish125: Changing of head are fast they just click in and out

              • @JXXY1337: The same as plugging in a cord to the outlet is fast. But when you need to do it several times during a clean (plug in a cord or change a head) it becomes a hassle. Might as well just use a corded vacuum

                • @Hamish125: I’m pretty sure it comes with a stand thing so you just place it on there and it charges

                  • @JXXY1337: I was just comparing the changing of heads of a stick vacuum as being a hassle in the same way using a corded vacuum and having to plug it in to the outlet several times during a clean is.

Basically I’m saying they’re both got their pros and cons.

    • +4

This was my thoughts 7 years ago. We've almost burnt out a Dyson V6 since, I find myself doing a 10second vacuum maybe 6-7 times a day. It's so fast from start to stop, similar to grabbing a broom. Couldn't go back

      • +1

How many batteries have you gone through in those 6 years?
I replaced my first dead battery with a generic from eBay and it doesn’t have nearly as many recharge cycles as the genuine Dyson battery.
Most recently, I bought an adapter from Amazon ($35) which lets me use Ryobi batteries. The 4Ah Ryobi battery lasts about 30 minutes which is 10 minutes more than the genuine Dyson battery.
There are adapters for nearly all of the other power tool manufacturer’s batteries.

        • Yeah killed the Dyson battery after maybe 4 years, then got a Amazon battery. Probably questionable doing that with the risk of a thermal runaway with unknown batteries, esp when we leave it on charge… Not sure what I'll do with our next Dyson, maybe I'll do as you've done with the adapter instead.

Our actual frame of the vacuum has cracks in it now from the kids using / dropping it

    • +2

Better in a way they're handy to grab off the wall and vacuum as long as they're charged, ie. no need to pull it out, plug it in, drag it around.

No "decent" suction if you're used to a regular, wired vacuum cleaner.

      • +1

Same as how hard core gamers will never use WiFi but for most ppl good enough for the convenience of wireless/cordless

    • +6

The bagged Mieles pick up so much more (and are so much better.on carpet) that its not even close. For often half the price, and far better build quality.

      • +1

Agree, but its a convenience and time thing with these hand held ones.

        • +3

Exactly. People generally value convenience and ease of use over performance. Look at blu ray. They have better quality but hardly anyone buys them because it’s not as convenient as streaming

        • Of note generally the "bagless" vacuums end up costing more within year or two if you actually change the filters on schedule. Not sure about the dyson.

Convenience and time = 5 seconds to plug the cord in, I mean…

          • @Ademos: I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong but I've never changed the filters on a Dyson. Just give them a rinse every couple of months

          • @Ademos: Not generally about effort in plugging it in but how the cord gets tangled around, not long enough etc etc.
Same argument as wi-fi. 1 second to plug in an ethernet cable into your laptop…

            • @illusion99: Tangled around…what?

Flashback to all those late night product ads ft useless white people that can't hold a cup without a speciality lever or something.

              • @Ademos: Furniture generally - legs of chairs/tables etc

          • @Ademos: have you ever used a cordless vacuum before? Legit question.

People dont make a decision on 5s difference but ease of just pick it up and vacuum.

            • @sauce2k: I have, then I stopped being lazy. Family used to have a dyson, and it was practically useless because it'd miss so much and we'd need to do-over once or twice a week with a real vacuum anyway.

It honestly takes 5 seconds to setup the miele, and it means doing it once.

I can see the appeal if you have a few messy kids or something. Otherwise the difference in effectiveness doesn't make up for the difference in laziness, in my opinion.

              • +2

@Ademos: lololololol clicks on a post for a product you have no interest in and proceeds to spend time commenting on how useless the product is.

                • -2

@illusion99: Would you prefer to go through life learning from others experience, or continually learning new things the hard way?

If youre in the market for this product, i guess its a foregone conclusion.

                  • @Ademos: There’s no way you talk about life lesson based on a f vacuum haahhahahaha come on man

                    • @sauce2k: I would enjoy it if you bought the dyson. Cheerio.

      • I went from a bagged Miele to a Dreame V10 Cordless and was amazed at how much extra dist the Dreame pulled out of the carpets. I think its because by Miele didnt have an active head (e.g. rotating brush) and that action on the carpet pulled way more out. Have only used a Dyson cordless once but it seemed a signficant step up in suction from my Dreame V10

        • Unpowered to powered head will do that, yeah, and the powered miele would have pulled out 5x more than the dyson.

Okay, that's mildly hyperbolic, but you get the point.

You can also get very cheap, but very good, aftermarket active heads for miele's.

    • Study some free market economy.

  • Was thinking to buy this as this week we have additional staff discount, however the reviews stated we have to keep pressing the power button to activate it and it’s quite heavy compared to other models.

      • That’s the Gen5 model … V15 you still have to hold in the power button while using.

        • That's what bird380 said

        • Help. Should I get a Gen 5 or V15???

        • +1

I might cancel my order. I thought I saw it had button press on and off. How annoying. Cheers mate

    • +1

Yeah holding the button in is a pain in the… finger.
You can likely get an aftermarket button lock though.

    • having to hold the button is a pain in the (finger)

    • Do you mean you have to press and hold the power button in addition to the trigger? Why would they design something like that? 🤦‍♂️

      • You just hold the trigger, it really isn’t that bad

        • depends if your finger looks like my octogenarian mum's.

  • Thanks OP. Will go well with my Dyson Zone Headphones

  • -1

Odd comparison but why this or Dyson in general over an Aldi that’s for $99?

    • +6

      It sucks better

      • It better sucks 8 times better v15 v ALDI version for now. Lol

        • TBH if the suction is poorer than Dyson's, then there's little point in spending on it at all.

I own a cordless Dyson and I can't imagine having less power than that little power it has. Would be less hassle to just sweep.

    • You can buy a 15k car or 250k car?

How do you think they compare each other? They have both 4 wheels, so 15k one is better value?

  • -2

Great price for a great vac. Plug in vax are so 1990.

    • you'll wish you were back in 1990 when you have to annually purchase a new battery for around $130 and yes we tried the eBay ones, lucky to get 4 months out of them.

      • +1

yea, if you wait 10 or so minutes after use before putting your vac back on the charger you will significantly extend the battery life. Dyson really needs to include this in their manuals but I am guessing they would lose battery sales?

  • +1

I have v8 (I think) and dc58? (I think) they are both surprisingly still running well. Tempted to get this but no spot for 3rd one lol

    • Heh all the same here

  • -2

Been cheaper if anyone needs one I would wait for Black Friday or Boxing Day sales.

  • A sensor in a dust path eh. Can’t see that causing any problems down the track :/

    • Optical sensor. Often a laser.

      • yeah but that sensor must be in the path of the dust (or at least be able to sense in that path), and where there is a dust path you will get dust buildup. Would be interesting to look into their piezo sensor tech a bit more to see if it is susceptible to dust buildup and whether it is easily maintained.

  • Would like be ok for my housekeeper to use?

    • Depends if you come to agreement before hand as to what happens if the cleaner accidentally lets go of the handle and let’s the motor end drop onto a hard floor.

  • +3

The v15 submarine is also included in the 15% off, bringing down to $ 1,061.65 (RRP $1549).
*This does NOT have a frickin' laser beam with it

    https://www.davidjones.com/product/dyson-v15s-detect-submari…

    • Contemplating on buying the submarine, but i already own the gen5. Can you comment on whether the mopping function is worth it once you try it?

      • Im still using my free v12 from dysin for a trial

        • What's the verdict?

      • I had my first attempt at using the mop today. It’s decent for a small bathroom and definitely cleans up well. But I wouldn’t use it to mop an entire house. I will leave that to my robot vacuum/mop.

  • Any discount gift card on sales?

  • Apologies if it has already been answered before.
What are the differnces between complete and absolute version?

    • Complete is meant to be an older V15 model, more accessories. Dyson does a great job of making the packs opaque across the regions.

  • -3

Bought 15, one for each house.

    • +1

If you have 15 houses why are you on OZB!

      • +1

How do you think they got the 15 houses?

      • That’s how I got my 15 houses.

  • -1

I was looking forward to owning a Dyson cordless, and now that I can finally afford one, went to see them in-store. They sure suck, meaning, the suction is great, but the plastic and the head attachment feel so cheap that I'll probably end up getting another Dreame V9 one as a replacement for my current that broke after a few years. Suction is crap but does the job well enough, and picks up pet hair from carpets really well for a fraction of the cost..

Prefer the simple white design of the Dreame V9 anyday too over the Dysons with their hip colors, but each to their own

I know it's a feature, but I am not playing mass effect here

  • Tempted but no until a genius find a way to swap the battery for better like on the V8 and older.
Since V10 gen, there is no more adapter due to the higher voltage.

    • Battery lasts much longer on the newer models though, so probably dont need to swap it.

  • +2

OP should it not be $849.15?

We price matched with JB yesterday and used some of our GCs from the 15% off sale last month to bring it down to $721.78.

Going from a V6 Animal which just wasn't cutting it anymore.

    • Jumped onto their chat, but nearest store with stock is unfortunately too far away. Delivery is 9.99 which makes DJs in my case a slightly better offer.

Also, there chat is obviously aware of this , they sent an offer through just with items title.

  • Anyway to tell if this is the 2023 edition, not the older one? Couldn't find the SKU, and the description appears to be the pre 2023 pack, that could be DJ be lazy with updates.

One way to find out. if not i'll return it. The optic head changed between years apparently, so you do not want old SKU stock

  • Sorry to hijack but what is a good vacuum for pet hair and carpet? I have a stick vac which is great for the floorboards but doesn't cut the mustard on carpet!

    • This V15, gen5 or by the reviews the V12 slim, using the motorbar head.

  • I picked up a V15 Submarine complete for $1300 from the dyson shop in moore park

  • I had V6 absolute and now this one. It is good upgrade. Recommended.

  • Have Dyson V7 Advanced, paid $330 in Feb, quite happy with it for my small apartment. So why is this one $500 more expensive? What does it do that my V7 doesn't?

    • Have you ever realized prices of the products that have same functions vary and this pretty much applies to everyhing you can buy?

  • I moved from my v9 dreame with a dead battery to v7 dyson earlier this year. Quality of the attachments is just so much better. Everything is better IMHO. I wonder if moving to dyson v15 would be the same jump in quality….

  • +1

Dyson vacs are like smartphones post 2010. There's 100 new models but once they worked out battery power and a powered head, there's no other features to sell. Measuring dust particles wirh magic lasers. Yeah cool. That's exactly what I need.

    • Agree. Like those people who wear smart watches to bed to tell them how well they slept. Ummm..if you wake up tired then you didn't get enough sleep or it wasn't a restful sleep. If you wake up refreshed then you got all the sleep your body needs. What are you going to do with all that other information your smart watch tells you?

  • There are two links on DJ's - any difference between the two?

    • Hard to say as there aren't enough details on the pages, and has DJ kept the inventory updated.

Deal link from earlier (which now appears to be coming up at the $1449)
      https://www.davidjones.com/product/dyson-v15-detect-absolute…
      https://www.davidjones.com/Product/25064914

Purple, the other one at full rrp $1449
      https://www.davidjones.com/Product/26107956

      • They have both 'editions' listed.

Original link has the Laser Slim Fluffy (1st gen version)

The second has the new replacement Fluffy Optic (2nd gen)

Will be interesting to see what is received and what other people received, SKUs in channel might be still carrying old stock.
I'd suggest if you get the original ask for an exchange , as they are all but identical listed items online that are very subtle different.

        • Update: Older model with original fluffy (laser with switch) received. DJ have no stock of either now. You can refund, but as its still $150 cheaper than the current deals… those that price-matched at JB took the best action.

Dyson now have the newer pack only online for direct sale.

Consider this the run-out of the 2021/22 packs.

  • +1

I think the Gen5 Detect at similar prices recently is a better deal. At this stage of the game I'd say this is a decent price given v15 is 2 updates old now, not a cracker…

    • +1

Decent reviews comparing both. Not a significant leap in features, downsides were the extra weight , but an extra 10% battery life. Gen 5 also changed the connectors , and the submersible one is even worse as its based on the v15 version before detect. It sounds like next year gen5 as the base and a maybe a reissue of the submersible on that model. This is a clearout of the v15s in channel i suspect before they can run gen5 at their rrp better.

  • Prices are really coming down for these high-end models now. I spent $1400 on the V11 not long before the V12 was released; they had been over $1000 for a long time.
