  • never heard of Thai irways before, are they good?

    • Hopefully better than Thai Airways which are far from impressive

    • Thai Airways is great and akin to Cathay in my experience.

    • Corrected! Thanks

  • Do they fly direct to Phuket from Sydney?

  • Just to share my experience, I cancelled within 24 hours of making a booking. They agreed to refund minus charges. At first they told me 3 months to refund. I called them after that and they said it will be 6 months worth of business days (maybe 10 months). Still have not received my refund. Look on previous Ozbargain posts to see similar stories.

What I wouldn't give for a few nights in Bangkok. Sigh.

    • How is it there mate? Hopefully doing my first Thailand trip in a few months

  • I’m in the process of booking a Thailand holiday. Will be flying from Brisbane .. can anyone recommend some of the better airlines to consider ?

Out of BNE? You are most likely forced into Singapore Airlines, Qantas only operates shitty A332s into SIN and then a Jetstar A320 to BKK.

      • Would you suggest flying to Sydney first and going from there?

        • Look Thai isnt the best carrier, run down fleets and a poor post covid soft product.
SQ is still the best carrier in the region by far, followed by Malaysian then Garuda, then Brunei (34 inches of pitch on a modern 788) and the list continues.

          • @AircraftFreight: We just flew to Bangkok a week ago on Thai. Planes are new, at least many international routes. We were on a new a350-900.

Domestic are still a lot older.

Still the best option from Melbourne. Jetstar never again, anyone else is not direct and adds hours to the trip. Singapore air is about 300 - 400 more return.

            • @thargelios: Out of Sydney its a older Boeing 777-300ER,I do prefer the now retired 747…..

        • If you can get a decent price with Singapore Airlines to BKK then just fly out of BNE. If you go via SYD and the BNE-SYD leg is on a separate booking, you probably end up needing an overnight stay in SYD if you want to play it safe in terms of possible flight delays.

Per above poster, Singapore Airlines are top notch in my experience. Decent modern planes and have always had excellent service with them, even back during the tail end of COVID travel.

I've only flown once, but Thai is fine. No worse than emirates in my experience. On the upside, if you want to continue from Bangkok to somewhere else, return flights in and out of Bangkok are significantly cheaper than to and from Melbourne.

    • Emirates is heaps better, but no longer do the Sydney Bangkok flights.

      • Depends on your experience I guess. Last 2 times we flew Emirates the staff were rude, the food was terrible and one of the toilets wasn't working. Thai airways at least have nicer staff!

We also looked at flying Emirates to get back to Melbourne from Europe in September this year. Emirates was $4k one way from London. Thai was $2.5k one way, and the Bangkok leg was in Business class.

  • Shouldn't you mention whether this is one way or return in the title?

      Good point! Thanks!

Visited Thailand recently (Malaysia Airlines, wouldn't recommend as they've gone downhill), but didn't have a great experience. Went to Hua Hin and Bangkok. Tourist is still down post-COVID, and it was hard to get tours as the numbers were so low that we'd have to pay for the unfilled spots or else the tour wouldn't go (we refused). Whilst there are beautiful temples, I found them without charm, as they were often deserted and always without worshipers. I much prefer the bustling pagodas of Hong Kong, which may have less gold, but 10 times the atmosphere.

On our second day in Bangkok, there was a shooting at the Paragon mall, with 3 people killed. We narrowly missed it, as we were going to go there but changed plans last minute.

On our last day in Bangkok, we nearly got scammed. We showed up at the Grand Palace, and a friendly well-spoken elderly gentleman stationed at an entrance approached us saying it was closed because staff were resting, but would reopen at 2pm. He recommended nearby temples we could visit in the meantime, and was happy to organise a tuktuk for a low price to take us there. He then also recommended a shop where they sold good things. After arriving at the second temple, another cultured, well-spoken gentleman who implied he was associated with the temple approached us, started talking to us, and also recommended that same shop. We asked the Tuktuk driver to take us there, and end up in a large, up-market jewellery store with high professional staff. We were close to buying something, but thankfully I quickly checked reviews on Google Maps before handing over money, where I read that all the people we spoke to were part of an organised scam, and that the jewellery sold to tourists at that store were fake "costume jewellery". We quickly left without a word. We are not naive and are well-travelled, but the people involved were highly believable, and not unlike other friendly elderly people who approached us with helpful advice when we travelled.

Anyone visiting Thailand would do well to read about these common scams

It was only afterwards that I came across this resource. The Australian Smarttraveller website mentions nothing about this.

Thailand is probably beautiful if you go off the beaten track, and are with someone who knows where to go.

    Some tips:

    • Best way to travel is ridesharing with Grab. I enjoyed travelling with locals in their nice-looking pride-and-joy cars. Cost was very low, but make sure you register before leaving Australia, in case SMS verification doesn't work overseas. Also, set up a credit card payment method to avoid having to pay cash - Paypal as payment method does not work in Thailand
    • ATM's charge you 20 Baht per withdrawal (over $6). Be mindful that you must explicitly ask the ATM to eject your card (unlike in Australia, where you don't get your money unless you took your card). I stuffed up after a very long day of travelling, and lost my card. Thankfully no money stolen.
    • Enable WiFi calling if your Telco supports it. That way you can call your bank to cancel your card without roaming ;) Unbelievably, Citibank only lets you cancel credit cards through the app or website, not debit cards.
    • Get a travel SIM. Thanks to this deal I was able to check reviews and avoid being scammed, and also able to request Grab rides. 1GB is enough if only for messaging and-the-like.
    • Don't even brush your teeth with the local water

That's a well known scam, plenty of info on Youtube about scams in Thailand. Also it's just common knowledge when a local approaches you in a tourist area in any country you should be very suspicious.

      • It sounds obvious afterwards, but when the local is a well-dressed gentleman stationed at a palace side-entrance purporting to work there, it becomes a whole lot less clear. Why authorities permit this to happen on an ongoing basis is anyone's guess. But yeah, tourist areas in any countries are places to be wary of. I'm just used to the scammers looking and acting more like scammers.

  • He who walks into a fence at the airport, is going to Bangkok

he who walks sideways through airport turnstile is also going to bangkok

  • I wish we could direct flights Brisbane - Bangkok again. It used to be so easy and reasonably priced. The need to stop somewhere has added so many hours to the flight, especially the return sector.

  • So links don't work ,,,as usual!!
