Any Recommendations for over The Counter Rock Show Ear Protection?

Got a live show in Melbourne to attend next weekend. Have been recommended Eargasm, but can only get them imported and the mark up is huge. Over the counter, from a pharmacist, safety gear shop, Bunnings or music shop should be a quicker turn around than Amazon. Delivery for local product seems slow. Hoping for 2 pairs, budget around $40 each.

    Loop earplugs are pretty decent

    • Those Facebook ads? Looks like a scam.

  • Fender make earplugs for musicians, I have a pair, they are nice, the case is also pretty good. price wise not cheap. but any music store that sells fender should stock them https://www.fender.com/en-AU/accessories/ear-plugs/professio…. Note they are reusable

If you can stretch the budget look at having some custom molded ones done. It's been a few years since I had my last pair done but they were $70, I'm sure they've gone up a bit since. Alternatively you can get DIY kits to do your own custom ones that are around the $40 mark but no experience using them.

It's like going to an airshow and wearing earmuffs. WTF?

Earplugs made for musicians reduce the volume of all frequencies by an equal amount so that the quality of the music is not lost.

But I want the full experience. Sure if I was gigging every night or going to 30 concerts a year.

Speak up sonny, I can't hear you.

        • +1

Not everyone's ears can put up with that without hearing loss.

      • why don't they just not play it as loud so people don't need to wear them? ;)

In some shows the music blends into a cacophony of sounds that you can barely recognise. Sticking your finger in your ear, or wearing earplugs attenuates some of the shriller frequencies so you can actually hear the music better. That's with just the general safety stuff. I'll have to look into the proper stuff.

Agree with you. I often forget to bring them, but I enjoy the show more when i can hear it better AND i don't have ringing in my ears for the next 24hrs

        Stop being a buzz kill

I wish I could stop the buzzing :(

  • Why do you need fancy earplugs…? Any earplugs will do, provided they have some kind of compliance to Australian Standards

    • +2

They will insofar as providing auditory protection, but the cheap foam plugs will attenuate certain frequencies more than others.
Proper concert/musician plugs will attenuate equally across the range of hearing, providing a better experience.

  • For better ones get Alpine Musicsafe Pro, $60 off Amazon, different tips for different noise reduction. Works a treat depending on where you are and the sound system.

I wear Industrial in-ear foam earplugs to all gigs and have done so since my early 30's (when I realised how dumb it was that I wore earplugs all day at work and then would go to a far louder environment with no protection, plus by then I didn't care about looking like a dork for wearing earplugs)

I still have a great time, I feel no loss in the experience (if anything I hear more of the nuance) and actually wake up the next day feeling better, it's like my body hasn't been pummeled as hard!

Maybe the specialty music ones do a more even job of filtering, but I suspect the difference is mostly marketing.

    • Agreed. No need to be an audiophile at a rock concert.

  • Etymotics are great, have a pair that are over 10 years old and still in perfect condition. Basically just softens everything, still clear and not muffled.

  • I still don't get it
If the musicians have earplugs, and people are turning up with earplugs, why don't they just play it at a lower volume!?

I rarely see Musicians have earplugs. They might have in-ear monitors to hear other band members (like in-ear foldback monitors), but they aren't necessarily earplugs.

Most of the time musicians want it loud.

  • I bought several musician earplugs, none beat disposable normal plugs

  • The amazon knock offs deliver in like a day if you're in a rush.

  • I have some $20 eBay ones that come in a container. Absolute godsend.

Really, anything will be better than nothing, even the $2 foam ones that you can buy at the bar of most live music venues.

  • Headphones with ANC?

  • Pity about your timeline, there are a few on Amazon (from US) that are good.

Have you looked at the other Amazon ones with fast local delivery? e.g.
    Earjobs $27.99
    DownBeats $23.95
    LiveMus!c $28.95
You can even splurge on a Sennheiser.

If you had more time you could have gotten Etymotics.
