Windscreen Chipped of a Newly Purchased Used Car from a Dealership

Hi Guys, I have purchased a car from a dealership a couple of days ago. I realized yesterday that the windscreen has stone chips. Dealer mentioned he did the roadworthy (pink slip) for the car before handing it over to me. My question is can I get the windscreen repaired from the dealer or are they not liable to fix that?

Thanks in advance

Can you prove it was already there when you purchased it?

    • No, I don't have a photo of the windscreen. There are three small chips and when I inspected the car, it was raining and couldn't notice

      • So you don't know yourself if they caused the damage or you did…

      • You have Buckley's chance. The kid servicing our brand new car dropped the wiper and broke the windscreen on the first free service and we couldn't get anything out of them. You're dealing with a used car salesman, that can't be better.

      Thats irrelevent.
Windscreen chips are not a fault that must be repaired by the dealer under warranty.
Only if it is required to make it roadworthy and indeed it received a roadworthy certificate.
The fact is that OP purchased the car after inspecting it.
OP probably should have organised a pre-purchase inspection before buying the car.
Then used the report to either withdraw from the purchase or to negotiate the price down.
      Too late now unfortunately.

Not if they happen after the sale…

          As I said
          Irrelevent!
          Car was certified as roadworthy.
OP should have noticed before buying the car
          End of story

          • @HeWhoKnows:

I might not have been there before buying the car…

The OP only noticed it after driving the car a significant distance…

Sorry just twitching out. I'm an old grump.

          These questions just require WDTDS?/WDTS?

    • He's waiting for them to reply to this post

  • Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of the windscreen but I have driven it only 60 km which is driving from the dealership to home.

    • +5

jeeez a lot can happen in 60km let alone 1km (I got a windscreen chip on entry to motorway which is less than 1km from my house).

ask dealer anyway - do you have insurance at least? May have access to free / discounted repair at least.

      • I will give them a call later this afternoon but not sure if they will entertain me. I just wanted to seek some advice from experts here
I have insurance with bingle but I did not opt for a windscreen cover when I purchased the car

Right……. and you know we are all expects here how? When you created a fresh/new account not too long ago?

Should've done it. New cars have some much technology in them now, especially Windscreens with sensitivity etc. For a few dollars a month, you can save yourself $2,000 for a new windscreen.

Why does it bother you that I created an account a few hours ago? If you don't want to answer, just move on and chill

I had a windscreen replaced in m y GQ yrs ago in Dandenong, got 1/2 way home and rock went through it.

Went back to Obriens, the dude told me it was a new record.

        Windscreen speed holes?

    • lol

Do you know how to take a photo of the windscreen & then link it here ?

    • One stone flies up 60 metres down the road and that can be the screen chipped. Unlucky, sure, but doesn't mean it can't happen.

  • @Jimothy Wongingtons Yes Sir, thanks for pointing this out

Does something prevent you from clicking on 'reply' to the user comment that you are responding to?

  • Who do you have insurance with?

    https://www.aami.com.au/car-insurance/comprehensive/windscre…

No excess on 1 claim per year.

Not making any suggestions here but something to consider.

    • Dunno about AAMI, but windscreen cover is an add-on for NRMA (which also covers sunroofs)

      • Add on for AAMI/WW as well.

    • I realized yesterday that the windscreen has stone chips

Don't think they just replace it just because of a stone chips. If they are big, they probably fixed it via O'Brien.

    • Optional extra $$$$

  • I bought my car new 18 years ago and since then have never looked for chips on the windscreen. I'm curious; what do they look like? Will have to Google.

    • +4

Depends, sometimes they’re crickle cuts, somrtimes they’re straight, sometimes you even get cheetos.

    • +2

We have lots of seagulls near our place, so chips on the windscreen would disappear pretty quickly.

Just use a windshield repair kit and save yourself the hassle

    • Thanks for the fantastic advice. I will look online for the kits. If you have any brand names in your mind, please share

I've used the Rain-X kit from supercheap auto for a long hairline crack and bullseye chips. Crack's pretty much invisible and stable for over a year now.

        • Thank you

        • +1 for rain-X - I have used many over the years, these are easily the best consumer level.

  • My question is can I get the windscreen repaired from the dealer

Good luck. Dont waste your effort… as someone said get a repair kit - they last for ever.

    1. A few the chips in a ‘non-roadworthy’ area? I.e. directly in front of the driver? If it’s not roadworthy they should fix it - but you should have picked it up before delivery.
    2. How old is the car and how reputable is the dealer? A newer car from a high profile dealer will have more chance of them giving you a repair under ‘goodwill’. If it’s a 10yo car from dodgy joes motors you’ve got no chance.
    • thanks. It is in front of the driver's position and yeah I should have picked it up on the first day. It was raining and I did not notice..
The car is 2021 but it is just a random dealer. He hasn't replied to my call and text message so I am assuming his answer is no

There's no way anyone is going to cover windscreen chips as a warranty repair. But you already knew that.

  • I got a car shipped to Tasmania from an interstate dealer and had it delivered to a mechanic who did the roadworthy test to get tassie registration. When i came to pick it up with the passed certificate i drove off, but still on the driveway i noticed a chip in windscreen and walked back in, and asked the mechanic. He said had he seen it he wouldn't have passed it and the dealer i bought it from would've replaced it under warranty. But since it was passed there was nothing that could be done anymore. I kept the chip… the windscreen o'brien chip fixer wasn't able to fix it either, but c'est la vie..

  • +1

If you can prove it was there before you took delivery, yes. If not, tough…

  • Did you do a walk around before signing the paperwork to take the car into your hands/possession?

Once you sign the paperwork, I'm afraid any chips on paint and windscreen are your responsibility as it's out of their hands/possession, and you will find that’s what they will say when or if you take it back, that’s why they say to make sure everything is okay with the car, well a good dealer should say that when I bought a new Subaru back in 2007.
