      Trying to decide to buy a Kindle or just use my iPad. Of course it’s not hard to use Calibre I think to change them around to different formats. Also several apps that do a similar job some just cost or use a GitHub project, surely someone has an open source app to do it. Once you get the drm off you can read in whatever format you like, it’s more about the ebook reader - Since there are Kindle apps for iOS and Android plus a dozen other apps, it really depends on what’s convenient. Kindles are supposed to be really light on the battery since using e-ink iirc, but then you gotta decide how much ram, since they are Wifi but not LTE iirc, you end up linking them to a phone if you are going somewhere. I have so many of these books and I’ve looked at 20 and keep saying much get around to reading that at some point.

      Already having an iPad Pro makes it sort of hard to want to spend money on something that is just a ebook reader. For heavy readers the newer kindles look impressive and buy at the right time and you’ll save a heap. I don’t like reading on my laptop but iPad I prefer, but ATEOTF, most of these are books, and I think Kindles are only B&W, so either all these books are B&W or you have to buy an expensive kindle for colour- check out Amazon. Kindles are really light and portable - iPads aren’t exactly quite as light. Everyone has their own preference but look at what gear you’ve got first, if you have no tablet at all then wait for the next Amazon sale and get a Kindle, just make sure you don’t short change yourself with local storage.

        @dman1

        I have a Kindle Oasis wi-fi 32gb model. In hindsight, a bit of an overkill in terms of storage as in hindsight, a 8gb storage version would have sufficed.

        I read my Kindle over a variety of devices:

        1. Kindle Oasis for most books in general reading of text is a most enjoyable experience despite having cataracts in both eyes, I can set a font size and and other adjustments quickly on the fly. Any title with graphics and colourful illustrations are not really worth the effort on the Kindle devices. Stick to text-only titles.

        2. PC/Laptop when I want to read technical manuals and 'coffee table' type books due to their colourful illustrations being much easier to read.

        3. Samsung Galaxy Note 7+ (12") Tablet with the Kindle app installed. Perfect high resolution screen for colourful 'çoffee-table' type of books. Kindle titles which contain high-definition graphics and colourful illustrations fare best suited for this type of device or Apple iPads and laptop PCs. Also excellent for technical manuals and text books.

        4. Samsung Galaxy smartphone. With the Kindle app installed, titles can be synced across all devices if you wish to continue reading your current book and you are sitting idle in the doctor's waiting room etc. Not the best viewing platform, but a handy quick and dirty solution if you want to keep up with your reading.

        Best of luck.

        • Thanks. That was useful. Appreciate it. I’d rather get more ram in these devices unless they have microSD card slots. I’m a Google Pixel 7 convert - I’ve decided the high end Samsungs are too expensive and tge A series are almost good enough, just a little underpowered. That being said the Google 7 fingerprint read sucks arse. I hope it’s better on the 8. My daily driver is an iPhone 14 Pro but very disappointed in the battery life on heavy days.
