Can I Nominate Where The nbn FTTP NTD Goes?

Am considering upgrading from FTTN to FTTP and was wondering if the FTTP point inside the house can be where the current phone connection point is situated. This point is in the middle of the house at my work desk. There is no roof access. Can they pull the fibre thru with the phone line? I can just imagine the NBN installing it at the closest and most convenient point to the external line which I feel would position it in the garage away from all connections.
Once I commit do I have the last say to cancel the FTTP upgrade? Appreciate any help.

  • You can nominate all you like, but check with the contractor if it's okay with them.

You need to sign the terms and cond before the upgrade, read them carefully.

Can they pull the fibre thru with the phone line?

What do you mean? Replace it with the phone line?
Usually, they snake it through the fibre cable, if they can't then no deal.

  • There not meant to but some installers use the phone line to pull the fibre through.

You can cancel or delay the fibre install if you can't agree on where to put the fibre NTD.

I would get it over with. FTTN is eventually going bye bye.

My experience says yes, but you may have to fight for it, depending on how lazy or professional the contractor assigned to you is. The first contractor I was assigned found a million excuses why it couldn't be installed anywhere but the most convenient spot with the least work and PVC piping required. He insisted this was the only possible location and even asked me to call his mate to remove the bricks for a tidy job.

When I made it clear I wasn't going to be messed around with, the contractor went home, after several written complaints to NBN they sent a very professional replacement who installed the connection point to exactly where I wanted it. I kept him well-supplied with snacks, coffee, and drinks throughout the few hours it took, and we were both very happy chappies at the end.

So, learn from others' experiences shared on OzBargain and you'll be more likely to get what you want, within reason.

      Why?

common courtesy in my culture to look after contractors when they're around.

        • But then they might become dependant on you for food and can't fend for themselves.

Is it a form of bribery?

That's what nominating means. Naming a candidate for something. Not deciding which candidate wins.

      • which candidate wins.

        So it's a competition?

Thanks guys. Think I might take your advice and give it a go. Thanks Twix when you look at FTTN going bye bye it makes sense. Cheers

  • I ran conduit and a pull/draw string through the roof where i wanted the NTD to go, about 20m.
I also measured out exactly where I wanted it on the wall and had a gpo installed.

They were happy with that and did a a great job.

i should mention, NBN co stuffed up so many times with the upgrade that a local third party came and did this part of the install.

    • I did the same and it was installed were l wanted it.

If there no conduit installed the nbn co contractors will just drill a hole though an external wall and connect it to the internal wall aka wall to wall installation.

For older houses there might not be a conduit aka fibre bridge installed in the house. Most nbn contractors will not waste there time going into a person roof to route a fibre wire to the ideal location. In fact the installation manual does state the owner has to install a conduit with draw string or existing cable.

Conduits need to be p20 and not the old p10 as most cables have pre terminated.

  • Its best to have the NTD in the garage.
That way you need not worry about NTD and easy to maintain it. Remember the NTD is property of NBN and stays with the house even if you sell / move.
Just run a Ethernet cable from the NTD to the location of your current modem/router.

  • I had to fight a bit with the installer to get my NTD to where I wanted. In the end he gave in and installed the NTD where I wanted.

half way down there is a link for "nbn FTTP Preparing guide" just above the embedded video
in that there is this statement

Where will the nbn™ supplied equipment be installed?
nbn™ supplied equipment should only be installed in a location that you are comfortable with. If your preferred
locations are unsuitable, your nbn™ approved technician must explain this to you and help you choose an
alternative. If you’re unhappy with where or how the device is being installed, contact your phone and internet
provider before signing off on the work.
