stack with 15% celebration gift card to get it for $1086.30 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/805828

  • should i wait for m3 or just get this? Having a student card that expires in next year march and don't know if apple will release a m3 chip mac pro by that time…..

depends what you want to do with computer. You cannot beat this re price/value (not even any Windows notebooks) when it comes to usual productivity tasks
M3, if comes out, will be way more expensive without much perceived benefit for productivity tasks. Same as M2
Computers reached a point when they are just good enough, broadly speaking. Apart from niche use cases* (AAA gaming, engineering), they do the same thing. This does too, with a never-ending battery life and a 99.99% accurate fingerprint sensor.
*in which case probably a desktop is a better option anyway

      • yeah i probably just need a new machine for coding purpose. My old 2019 macbook is a bit lack of performance in productivity and produce quite significant fan noise when I compile code. So I am not sure if its a good choice to pick up a m2 mac for now or wait for few months and pick up a m3. Honestly I can accept a price difference within 500, so its really a hard decision for me lol

I’ve had this exact M1 MacBook Air for a couple of years and I’ll say it’s the best value computer I’ve ever owned. M1 was no slouch when it released and it still holds up well.

I’ve used it for Unity game development (hobbyist level) so it can handle running Unity, Visual Studio, Blender and Photoshop.

Battery life is fantastic and should easily get you through an 8-10 hour workday. With above activities (game dev) I’d expect less battery life.

I’ve got the 8GB/512GB SSD/8-core GPU variant for reference FYI. I know a lot of people are worried that 8GB RAM is insufficient and will end up wearing out the SSD when it uses swap memory, for me i haven’t noticed a slowdown nor am I particularly concerned about the possibility of the SSD wearing out.

          Just my $0.02

          • @awhiskin: The 8gb of memory would be the concern for me. I have an M1 MBP with 16gb for (data eng) work but I'd be concerned about 8gb.

  • I'm not sure what it is, but I have the 8 core GPU version of this and the battery life has gone downhill a lot over the past few months.

    • odd - I bought the base model near release, almost ~3 years ago, and the battery is still holding up fine. Maybe check the battery health; settings -> battery -> (i) button? I'd never done so on mine since it's never been an issue, but doing so just now shows it is at 94% of its maximum capacity (which is pretty incredible imo, possible that Apple underestimated capacity to get such good results).

      • +1

It's down to 93% after about 3 years as well

        • +1

That's actually quite good. Windows laptops vary between 10% in the extreme 20% degradation every 12 months. That is of course the laptop being plugged in majority if it's life as they're used as portable pcs now in the commercial space.

          • @Sean8802: I don't think it's reporting that accurately though, it's done 230 cycles.

          • @Sean8802: In apples favour because their battery life is so good, they have much less cycles to them

            • -1

@superroach: They also only charge to 80% by default. You have to tell it to charge to 100% if you're going to be off power for a long time.

    • How old is the lappy?

    • +1

GPU has nothing to do with it.

In any case, there's a 2 year warranty on it. If the battery is at 80% health (or close to it) and still under warranty, they'll swap it for you, AND you get the warranty reset on the battery (so, it has a new battery with a new 2 year warranty).

      • It's older than 2 years now. It's also only a 1 year warranty because I'm in NZ.

      • -1

Warranty does not get reset when parts are replaced within the laptops warranty period..

        • So when I worked at Apple, the part that was replaced had a further 2 years coverage under consumer law. Technically not warranty so you’re right, but still covered so free repair if component fails.

          • @TallnTechy: Can you please clarify the Apple warranty? Is it actually 1 year from Apple and another 2 years under consumer law? So 3 years or 2 years all up?

            • @wallaby12: if you have purchased your machine within Australia, it will have 1 year warranty worldwide.

But it will also have at least 2 years coverage under consumer law. Which gives you the same rights as a warranty.

              So 2 years total coverage.

However we also covered up to 3 years sometimes under consumer law. However it’s been a hot minute since I worked there. This all may have changed lol.

            • @wallaby12: @wallaby12

It's 3 years at first, and +2 years for each warranty reset. This is accurate as of two weeks ago.

        • 1) it absolutely, 100% does reset. If you want to argue with it, argue with Apple, who reset my warranty twice (for the parts they replaced, as I clearly said before, and am saying again now).

          2) it's 3 years warranty, like TallinTechy said, 1 year + 2 years.

          3) warranty resets are +2 years. My laptop purchased in Jan 22 just had the battery replaced (Oct 23). Its warranty is now good until Oct 2025

My paperwork clearly says: "Warranty Status: Consumer Law Repeat Coverage (CL)"

I know someone who bought an ipad in 2017, and because it kept failing - and getting replaced under warranty - it's STILL under warranty today. It's not just laptops.

Why U so confidently incorrect period?

  • i only want m2 for this price

Any idea what's the maximum number of gift cards Officeworks accepts in a single transaction?

    Will need 6 x $200 + 1 x $78

    • shouldn't have any limit in store

    • +1

      I used 15 yesterday: 14 x $200 and 1 x $100.

Just be polite and ask them before they ring it up if you can split payment and you should be fine. Also let them know the value of each card as you use them so the enter the correct amount to charge each card and speed up the process.

NOTE: If you are using the celebration gift cards you swipe them like a credit card and enter the pin on the POS.

      • Those who have ultimate giftcards will follow the same process?

        • Yes

I bought this spec nearly 3 years ago for less than $1100. Why would this consider a good deal?

    • +1

      Because, Apple.

  • It's not a good deal. Costco just had M1 priced for $1247 and M2 for $1599 a few days ago and you can go to Officeworks for a price beat and get another 5% discount.

    • Not seeing the costco deal

      • It ended on 17 Oct

  • +1

Shame they don’t come wit! 16gb ram standard

  • good price

  • -2

Something else to note with the base model 256GB drices is they are half the speed of the 512GB and larger drives, so id you are using something like chrome with a tonne of tabs and it needs to use swap space due to 8GB ram limit the performance wont be that great.

  • -1

    It’s only 8GB RAM

    It’s unusable

    Totally

    • 8 GB is perfect for all non professional applications.

  • My son has an Intel macbook around 6 or 7 years old and getting long in the tooth. Hopefully off to uni next year, assuming this would be OK for general use/general studies. Business related course not media related. I know he will say he wants a Pro with larger screen etc, but they then jump up dramatically in price. Bit turned off with 8GB, but many say it is not an issue (i use 32GB on Windows laptop)

    • Could go 15" Air?

      • Trying to understand the difference between pro and air ? Pro more powerful, but air lighter?

        • +1

pro is more for professional use e.g. run multiple programs.
air doesn't have fan and thinner easy to carry around and travel.

  • Need to get a MacBook for school for my daughter next year. Should I wait for Black Friday deals? Or is this as cheap as it gets?
