    Looks like a good deal

    Thanks got 5

I genuinely really enjoy seeing this joke on items that have a high price.

      • +1

With inflation it's a normal price

who needs kidneys right? kidneys are highly overrated

    • +7

      Who said kidneys are enough?

    • Only need one right?

      • +7

        Dialysis is covered by medicare.

        Theoretically you dont need kidneys

    • You said that like your acnes.

  • +7

have a feeling the M3 Pros will get a price hike.

    • +5

I dunno, Mac sales are falling, perhaps because they haven't released M3 yet. I hope they at least bump up the starting ram and storage. 8GB may be enough for most people, but if you buying an M Max then you're probably doing something that uses a lot of memory.

      • +3

8GB on a macbook pro only exists to have a From $X pricepoint. You would be paying far more for an different enclosure, multiple display outputs capability.

I would imagine that a M3 would still have a price bump, but they are creative in their pricing. Maybe instead of being $300 per 8GB (yes, it costs $900 to upgrade from 8GB to 32GB currently… ), The base price will go up, and the $300 number will go down. Who knows.

Still, power wise the M2 is still an excellent buy for work if you make use of it.

        • +7

8 GB is plenty enough for people who opens it, surfs the net for a few minute, does some shopping and shuts it down.

But 8GB for the asking price? Thats ridiculous.

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: If that's your use case, you could get a cheap windows laptop or Android tablet to do that and pay 1/4 the price of an 8GB Apple Macbook.

            • +3

@Trishool: Now say that to the apple fans.

            • @Trishool: I've got a $300 8th gen refurb Yoga and a M1 MBA. The refurb is definitely adequate for light usage. It feels fast running Linux. I've also bought similar systems for people who want a budget system and they have been happy with them.

The MBA definitely has advantages though - much more power efficient, standby works better, screen is much nicer, speakers are better, trackpad feels better, build quality is better.

            • -6

@Trishool: 8GB of PC memory is not equal to 8GB of unified memory on a Mac, with the software having such tight integration to the hardware. An Android tablet won't run the Adobe suite. And performance on Android tablets is disgusting anyway.

          • @[Deactivated]: You underestimate the number of chrome tabs I have open, ser.

            • @Buz1986: M series wont slow down easily as its RAM is faster and can swap faster. To give you an example, I played youtube video in 15 tabs and compiled a large project at the same time on battery on 8Gig M1 and it was faster than the 8 core intel mac only compiling project on power with 16 gigs of RAM. It will sligly eat into SSD life, but that SSD will still last if surfing is all you do.

      • +1

MacBook Pro and Max starts at 16Gb of ram. Only the air model starts at 8Gb

        • MacBook Pro has 13 inch models that start at 8GB.

          • +1

@webtonmoy: But nobody buys that one instead of an MBA at the low end, or a real MBP.

            • @entropysbane: I bought it. The Air was out of stock at the time and I always wanted to try Touch Bar anyway. The extra core and active cooling is nice to know it's in there too.

          • @webtonmoy: The 13 inch model is called Pro but that’s only in the name. The processor is actually the base M1/M2 like the MacBook Air (not M1 Pro / M2 Pro)

      • +1

Tbh, the first gen M1 MBA still has three years left in it - myself and others probably don’t really see the benefit in upgrading until they drastically change the weight

        • If it had more memory and storage I'd be able to do most of my graphic design work on it. I like to be lazy and leave all the Adobe programs running at once. If I used them one at a time it'd be manageable. Unless an After Effects project gets particularly huge, that'll eat as much memory as you can offer it.

  • Yes, many thanks for your recommendation.

But considering the price of Memory and SSD right now, you know it's not a really good deal ……Some people just don't have a choice.

  • +12

Still kicking myself for not getting that M1 Max with 64GB ram and 4TB storage. What was it, like $2700? Bargain.

    • +3

Hoooly what! Thats an amazing deal! Im kicking myself now for not even seeing it!

      • +3

I wouldn't go back looking for that one, I still talk about that deal with my mates… (mwave)

    • Sounds like an amazing deal.

    • Same here 🥲🥲

    • When?

    • I grabbed one and it was $4k down from nearly $7k.

    • Not that cheap, $3999 I think

      • True, but those kind of specs will be good for a long time.

    • +1

Do you have a link to it? I'd like to sit and pray for that deal to return.

    • Not quite, it was $3999.

  • More than 8GB Ram in a Mac Sold at JB, interesting.

    • I believe the Max isn’t even offered in 8gb

      • Ahh, that’s probably why then.

  • -2

I know it’s typical for people to whinge about how overpriced apple products are, but seriously… $4.5k for a mediocre laptop is ridiculous.

    • +4

my workplace pays more than that for Lenovo workstations and they have crappy battery life off power, and are made of plastic. They do run software these MBPs don’t though.

      • +5

your workplace is dumbo. They should know corporates and public sectors are cautious of using lenovos now because they are a chinese company and perceived associated cyber-risk. Your procurement folks should be negotiating much lower prices with your lenovo reps.

      • +2

Lmao whoever you work for must have no clue if they’re 1. Purchasing Lenovos, 2. Purchasing Lenovos more expensive than than a $4.5k laptop.

Move to ACT. Almost all government agencies are in business with Dell as their primary partner.

        • Business grade Lenovo's are much better quality than Dells, which are absolute rubbish. This is based on fail and service rates.
HP workstations though are where it's at, including mobile.

    • +13

Overpriced, perhaps. Mediocre, not at all. M chips are just damn good and Apple knows it.

  • +1

I just had my work intel macbook replaced with an M2 Pro and super impressed. Now looking at replacing my old personal laptop (HP ZBook) with one.

But, I think I'll need 64GB RAM. On the fence - buy now, or wait for the M3 Max.

Bloomberg suggesting early January, but they haven't released the base M3 or Pro yet.. so the M3 max could be several months into 2024. Who knows.

Given how expensive an M2 Max with 64 or possibly 96GB is… ergh, unsure if i wait or not.

Cue jokes about waiting for the M4, M5 etc

    • There’s no way M3 pro will come out in January, where did you read that? I read on multiple sources late spring 24 (northern hemisphere) at the earliest. Still useless rumours, but still makes more sense than January?

      • +1

Well, early 2024 'to spring'. M2 Max was January 2023 but yea, base and pro aren't out.. https://www.macworld.com/article/2107225/m3-pro-max-macbook-…

Macrumors also showing approaching typical time between refreshes, but i guess it could be longer given known issues with 3nm yields

      • You'll probably see the macbook airs first, with the base level M3 before any other updates, so that means there will be many months left.

        • I just looked it up and apparently the Pro line is one step ahead the base M3 in the production process. So rumor has it that M3 Pro will come first 🤷‍♂️

          • @Nedkellyinthebush: I think product cycle is more important.

They will want to move existing stock.

I suspect all m3s are going to be later than everyone thinks.

    • M2 Max 96gb will be 12k wouldn't it?

    • Get the M2 now, then give it to me when you upgrade.

  • +1

Have one for work. Touche to the company - because I always use it and never want to leave it.

  • Don't forget to use your perks!

  • not sure mate, can this do ray tracing ?

    • My iPhone 15 pro max can do ray tracing its build in. So its only a matter of time before the macs have it. M2s can't do ray tracing from what I saw.

    • +2

A calculator can do ray tracing. A lot of modern rendering loads utilise it - e.g. cycles or cinebench - which a mac like this is decent at.

It doesn't have hardware acceleration for RT in games though if that's what you mean, and I doubt there's much software support there either.

  • +5

I'll wait until they replace the notch with dynamic island.

    • +1

Can't imagine being stuck on a dynamic island with that god aweful notch…

  • fobes rumor might be true

  • Just wondering: can we play high config games on this? like Call of Duty, etc ?

  • arent' we a few months away from an M3 launch?

    • That's why I'm using a typewriter at the moment because my last laptop died and I'm waiting for an M3

      • Me too I pened this on paper and had to go to library to type up :(

    • this is still good deal

  • +1

If past behaviour repeats (it might, or it might not), when the M3 Pro/Max MBP are released, there will be new-old-stock M2 Max laptops on clearance - e.g. the mwave sale where people picked up 16" M1 Max 64G ram, 4TB ssd beasts for $4k.

i..e if you're not in a hurry, then wait. If you need something now, then this deal is not bad.

    • ofc it will repeat

  • +2

Who actually needs this kind of power if it isn't required for their job though? You would have to be a halfwit if all you do is browse the web and buy this.
I found the same laptop but M1 Max at The Good Guys for $3,900 on runout, last one in the state. I was pretty damn tempted but logic won in the end.

  • -1

    crapple

  • Can we price match with apple? I heard they only do up to 10% off

  • Was looking at one 2nd hand on marketplace and was wondering if someone could tell me if these specs will be suitable for music and video editing (not pro level but wanting it to be more than adequate).
    MacBook mid 2015 Monterey 12.2.1
2.2 Gh Quadcore Intel Core processor
    Memory 16g 1600Mhz

    Cheers

    • +1

No, unless it's really, really cheap.

      • What's really cheap? Sub 500

        • Yeah, it's getting pretty old now.

  • +1

This will outlast the mac OS software support.

Like a my family 5k retina 27 iMac, still works but App Store practically empty and can’t even get chrome or fb messenger because it’s an obsolete model.

    3.8GHz quad‑core Intel Core i5
    16GB Ram
    Radeon Pro 580

    • Any unofficial support?

    • +1

If you are a little technical, try Open Core Legacy Patcher. I’ve run it on a 2013 Mac Pro and 2015 MacBook Pro and running Sonoma has been pretty hassle free.

      • Thanks I’ll check it out

  • +1

    The Mac is fantastic!
Apart from lack of gaming it does everything else smoothly.

    • So I can watch Netflix on it ?

    • How many tabs?

  • Apple will have $5000 phones and $10k laptops within 10 years. Netflix will be $50 a month

  • Any device that isn’t user serviceable should not have “pro” in its name

    • My dogs collar is a pup crew pro I'm going to drop them an email and ask for the service manual.

  • +1

Weirdly, the high RAM macs, are the cheapest way to run/train language models, compared with buying a mining rig with a bunch of 3090's
Like, Apple with the 128GB mac studio, accidentally stumbled into being the cheapest way to train the larger opensource models lol.

    • compared with buying a mining rig with a bunch of 3090's

Was wondering why a guy dropped 5k on a trading forum for 4 x RTX a4000

  • I still use a 2012 MBA for movies or surfing the net. My 2013 MBPro still working fine for normal tasks.

    • Im still kicking a 2010 i7 MB Pro with 16GB ram and 500gb ssd. Only reason im keeping it is the physical DVD drive

  • JB Hifi just cancelled my order after waiting two weeks. They confirmed last week most likely to expect it earlier than the advised shipping date.
