I remember getting a 6 week ETA when I was pre-ordering the Alienware QD-OLED monitor, but they started shipping after 2. They could be giving a longer lead time to get ahead of demand.
Do NOT buy the cheaper model!!!
Why is the storage not DIY upgradable?
the performance jump is pretty big between the two integrated GPUs
cheaper one is Z1 and and expensive one Z1 extreme, mofos trying to confuse less techy consumers
Thanks for reminding..I thought they are identical except the storage
Yep if you want the cheaper model you’re better off getting the Steam Deck.
How does this compare to the Rog Ally?
bigger better screen, faster ram, detachable controller, hopefully doesn't fry the sd card slot xd
A big weakness is no VRR screen. The extra pixels can also be a con depending on what games you play. I personally think it's a pro cause it scales nicely with 800p but I'm sure some people would just like it to be 1080p like the ally.
Releasing a handheld gaming PC without VRR is a big mistake. It was for Valve and it will be for Lenovo.
Nintendo gets away with a fixed refresh rate because they can dictate all games need to run on their hardware at 30/60.
PC games are not optimised for specific hardware so all of these things have the same problem where performance is extremely variable, not just between games but even in individual titles. So you end up either with tearing or having to lock it at 30fps.
With LFC VRR can work all the way down to 20fps so you get to make the most of your device's performance at all times. There's no reason not to have it on a $1400 device when it's standard on basically every tablet and smartphone now.
@MagnamoniousRex: so Rog Ally is the best on market at this stage?
@CDG: It’s still the steam deck.
@piston3461: The ROG Ally is better than the steam deck. Even as a steam deck.
@jakeh87: With Steam OS on it I’d maybe agree. I used a mates one and the windows experience isn’t great in comparison.
Trackpad for navigating , especially for shortcuts in emulation is also a game changer. I can fast forward , reload etc with a flick of the thumb.
The latest software update for the ally actually reduced performance.
Valve in comparison have their software locked down way better than ASUS who’s software support is notoriously awful
@piston3461: depends, the deck has best price to performance ratio. However, I've seen used ally's go down to $800. So, the price difference is not that much between a used Ally and a New deck
Yep I LOVED the rog ally but DAMN it kept frying my SD cards. Funny I got a replacement coming in and I asked the guys to test their own SD cards before sending…a day later I got a FULL refund.
I've seen some that the ally has questionable qc. Best to wait for reviews of this for issues.
perfect work laptop tax deduction
could you salary sacrifice this?
yup
yes we can. we sacrifice our salary to buy this
@CyberMurning: Im sacrificing a kidney or two to get one.
@CyberMurning: How does this work, can someone explain?
@MagicTsukai: The same way you claim a laptop. Via depreciation at its above $300
@xoom: Do ato ask for proof of usage one fine day?
@OhNoUShiz: if they love you they may contact youself.
i was unlucky so far no love for me
hopefully with many new handhelds, it will bring steam price to below aud450 (i dont mind the 2nd hand)
Should be close - got mine for low $500 AUD during the last steam sale (was in Japan and the sale hit whilst I was there so sale + tax free).
1 year warranty…
Pretty common for electronics
But consumer law has you covered for at least 2yrs for this sort of product.
is that a Stargate on the screen?
chevron 7 locked!
I miss the show.
New one keeps being in the works but keeps getting delayed again and again
The directors of The expanse did a pitch, lets see what happens@Headless: That is potentially amazing. First I've heard of it, thanks.
I almost feel like SG1 and Atlantis were lightning in a bottle and might be hard to recapture that magic.
@Caped Baldy: I actually had a director of Stargate message me back on reddit, turns out the atlantis writing / symbols are made up and not created like a language, was fun thinking it was though
Indeed
Still no release of Y900 (Lenovo Tab Extreme) :(
I was gutted to learn the Legion Go has no VRR. It looked like the dream machine :(
Whats VRR
Variable refresh rate
Will it make a hug difference?
@CDG: It will kiss you instead and give you the reach around.
@CDG: Very handy for eliminating screen tearing and for games that have low refresh rates (high-end games) so it doesn't feel like it is stuttering.
@Guybrush57: Oh no…I wanna use it to play Microsoft flight Sim and fc24 …and GTA6
Just for general awareness. Lenovo engineers during an AMA session has gone on record to state 144hz range or thereabouts no VRR is better than 60hz or below with VRR any day.
You can also look up Rtings guide as well which correlates this.
So Asus Ally 60hz VRR is NOT better than Lenovo Go 144hz
If you want to play portably, consider the rog ally instead. The extra 250g is a lot if you’re not setting this up in desktop mode frequently.
Lift….do you even?
- buff yoda
I have a rog ally with a battery mod and it brings it up to 850g or so. I think stock is 600g?
Anyway I'm using it with 3d printed grips and it makes it comfortable to hold. The grips on the Legion Go look comfy so I don't think it'd be a problem.
rip off
Funny to call a PC as rip off. It is handheld PC, and tons of brands already around for long. It just hapen that steam deck make it famous.
I still remember ayaneo handhelds in jb hi fi for close to 2k.
$2k is super expensive, I bought an Ayaneo from marketplace. It literally feels like it's worth about half the price or maybe $1150 at most.
@RetroMetro: i agree, when Jb first got Ayaneo, I looked at prices and ordered steam deck on ebay auction for half the price. it was worth it, now rocking Rog ally.
I will wait for steamdeck 2 and hope it launches in Australia on same day as US.
I got ayaneo founder for around $800. Really excited when they say will distribute to Oz, but disappointed when the one in jb hifi is not the best version of ayaneo at that time.
I was ok with 2K if it was 6800U, but instead they choose bigger storage with 5560U.
They have 6800U now for 2K, which is too late with too many cheaper competitor around.
by definition, just because it contains silicon chips doesn't make it a PC.
It is a literally PC, portable one just like regular laptop, mini PC just like beelink but with batterai, some call it UMPC in reddit, some put it under handheld PC category in amazon, also it run PC games.
Not sure what your definition of PC.@mfu: personal computer as opposed to laptop, tablet, phones..etc
@SpicyStew: I'll just drop wiki link here
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_computer@mfu: they definitely don't include handhelds in PC sales figures
@SpicyStew: This is absolutely a PC - it's x86 and it can run Windows.
You can even plug in a keyboard/mouse/monitor and use it as a full desktop if you like !
Damn is it the one with the cool mouse casing.
Its the one.
Lenovo has a horrible track record with software updates for phones, laptops and tablets even worse than Asus. in my experience. they will release a fixed version next year, but don't expect bios or firmware updates.
I feel bad for the people who end up buying the headset.
do not buy as pre-order
Agreed, it looks cool on all the marketing.
… But this is "the marketing".
Wait until it's actually in people's hands and get a proper review first
Will this be able to emulate a NES?
lol, yup. This is absolute overkill for NES/SNES. Android phones and sub $100 hardware can run NES/SNES emulators.
What about Atari
You'll need at least a pentium 4 duo processor for that.
Waiting for JB Hifi preorder for easy returns and support. Not trusting Lenovo with RMA.
Yep
Will there be??
I've not had issues with Lenovo and RMAs. Then again, I found Kogan's customer support & RMA process excellent.
My only complaint about both of them was it took longer to send things back and forth, rather than being able to simply walk into a B&M and exchange a faulty device for a new one or refund.
why are these so big and heavy its meant for travel.. so annoying lol
Batteries weigh a lot
the switch is a nice size.
i know its bad but would be nice if its that size. There's a bunch of smaller gaming handhelds on the market, not just the Deck, Ally and this Legion Go. Handhelds from Ayaneo, GPD and a bunch of other companies too. The YouTube channel ETA Prime does plenty of reviews on them.
@CrispyChrispy: I've been waiting for handheld gaming machines ever since Sony made that weird UX UMPC in 2006.
Maybe now there's a flood of them game devs will start building proper touch support into their games. Even in tablet mode with the stylus configured to behave like a mouse I couldn't get it to work properly.
Closest handhelds that probably come to that size are Ayaneo and the rog ally.
Switch is probably the best for that. Get an old one that you can install custom firmware on
These are getting really expensive.
The beauty of the Steam Deck is that it's $700.
When you go beyond $1000, you're in 4050 gaming laptop territory.
Owning the ally I have to agree. At some point, it becomes "just get a laptop or PC". I have seen so many people on Reddit trying to mod the Ally or other handheld into a full-fledged PC, like monitors and stuff. Like just get a laptop for that cost.
Yep, pretty much.
I went from a Steam Deck to an Ally to a gaming laptop to now a M-ITX build. Figured I wouldn't fully utilise the portability of a handheld so just settled on a PC instead.
I think a lot of the people who buy handhelds and do all the modding and get the gear are just people who like to tweak and fine tune their stuff. A lot of them don't actually game on it much lol
This will be my boss 100%.
He will buy one, probably 3d print a bunch of stuff for it, mod the software, and get distracted by another project lol
As someone who has bought asus ally on launch, i recommend waiting and not reordering. These hand-held devices are still too experimental
Exactly same thought. I got refund for mine. The technology is not ready yet but when it will be ready, wow! That will be insane! I preferred much more playing on my ally than my laptop.
I only just received my steam deck and yes, if you're not too savvy with a pc and tweaking settings for a Linux OS, then I would not recommend these portable devices until the next few versions come out and it's easier for the average person to tweak.
Ah man. Still trying to decide between the ROG ally and this. Hesistant to buy before general release…
If it's any help I've found ergonomics and weight to play a big part in it. I had the Steam Deck and it was quite comfortable (although a little too far to reach the analog sticks imo) but it was slightly too heavy for anything longer than say an hour of use. The Ally is a fantastic weight (barely - if I put a case on it's too much) however the sharp edges of the device make it quite uncomfortable to hold for longer sessions. My caution with the legion go is that it weighs something like 850 grams so I couldn't imagine using it for longer sessions.
My recommendation is to see if any shops have it on display to try before you buy.
i am finding a handheld to play FC24 and Microsoft flight sim , and maybe GTA 6 if it comes out
Please
DO NOT PRE ORDER.
TIME AND TIME AGAIN - Companies have shown that you are a beta tester if you buy products on day one.
Asus did that by lying about every benchmark that they said about the z1E performance , and then forcing every reviewer to have become inaccurate/liars by gimping the performance in order to keep the SD card from frying as much and as often before realizing their PCB topology was so poorly thought out and designed that they can't actually fix the SD card issue without a complete redesign of the PCB as the controller cannot be just moved away very easily.
They did this by rushing to market when their own engineers were unhappy with a lot of the finalized designs they ended up shipping to market.
Asus has a horrible track record of software support, which is more important than any other device on something like a handheld. Nearly 4 bios over several weeks of updates all of which broke a feature and further gimped performance each time.
If you think Lenovo is any better, they're on the bottom of the list of after market support. Their entire product line is contingent on shipping things now and forgetting about support for it.
I hope I am wrong, I want this to be the very best, but given it will always be limited by the subpar experience windows will force on you and untested and unknown waters that lie ahead with handheld devices.
Patience is warranted.
Disagree - nothing is perfect but the ROG Ally is still a great little device. Sure, you can't use the micro-sd, but I'd still take it over the Steam Deck any day.
Meanwhile this Lenovo GO looks to be the same as the ROG Ally, just with faster RAM, a Bigger Screen, and detachable controllers. If you like the sound of that - I say go for it. You only live twice - right? Once in your dreams and once in your life.I see a new dream every day!
"its a great little device, except this advertised feature doesnt work"

Damn 5-6 weeks pre-order wait!
