Is there really any benefit to a “4K” version of classic movies like this?

    • +12

They were all shot on film, so provided the original film is in decent condition there's theoretically no limit in terms of the resolution they can be scaled to.

      • @Dimatoid totally agree.

As long as the master is in good condition, the ones on film have the potential to benefit both in picture and sound

      • Not really true. Film has a grain which limits its resolving power. Further, lenses have a limit of sharpness.

        • +1

35mm is good for 4K, 70mm scans well at 8k and from where I’ve read could be resolved further.

    • +5

The benefits are insane. I watched The Shining recently and it looks better than many movies shot now.

      • +4

Watching "The Thing" really changed my view - it looked like it could've been filmed last week.

        • +3

100%, The Thing is probably the most impressive 4K blu ray I've seen.

    • +5

In the case of The Good, The Bad And The Ugly - yes. My Blu-ray copy had over-sharpened film grain and a gross yellow tint. Kino Lorber’s 4K release resolved those issues.

It’ really a case of do your research and see what a particular release brings to the table. Sometimes they aren’t worth it.

On another note I paid $70 for this when it first came out so this deal is a bargain.

    • The one's I've seen don't look like they were made using the film and are ordinary looking upscales with sharpening filters from the DVD releases.

    • Unless you have a large tv (65inch+) and are sitting fairly close, there's basically no difference even between 4K and FHD. Plenty of morons who have a 42 inch 4K 3 meters away from the couch and preach about how good 4k is lol

      • You may want to pay your local Specsavers a visit.

        • That's actually science. If you are one of those I mentioned, it may be worth a read here :

          https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-r…

          https://i.rtings.com/images/optimal-viewing-distance-televis…

For instance, a 55 inch UHD is only worth it at a distance of 2m or less.

          • @liongalahad: I notice a huge difference at all realistic viewing distances. Is the difference as much at 10m as 2m? No, of course there is some diminishing returns, but to the degree at which those often laughed at charts say is ridiculous.

It's not all about simple resolution, either. Watch a restored movie from the 60's and tell me you don't know the difference in the restoration, colour etc.

I love a scienceoooor as much as the next bloke but you're taking something subjective like "worth it" and defining it as objective for everyone, which is just silly.

            • @pharcyde: mmmm..yeah, nah. There's a finite resolution of the human retina, for example a 42 inch tv 3m or more away from you covers a very small field of view and a number too small of retina cells to make any significant difference between 720p vs 4K. It's a fact, not a subjective thing.

Anything else is just your perception, you know you are watching a 4K TV and your brain tricks you to think it's actually worth it when it's actually not.
              THAT's the subjective part.

On the film restoration etc I absolutely agree with you it's generally very much worth it, but that's another story.

Does owing the Blu-ray and then purchasing it on 4K make you watch it more ?? (having a large collection of BD and 4K - yeah.. nah.. I only double dip for films that I'll watch over and over - and The Good The Bad and The Ugly whilst a classic requires 3 hrs more time. Case in point - watched the BD of THE EXORCIST - the image is suitable enough not to waste anything on 4K).

Actually recommended is IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT - as it comes with two other films

What format are the other 2 movies on? 4k, Blu-Ray?

      • +1

It comes with a 4K and a standard Blu-ray with THEY CALL ME MISTER TIBBS! (1970) and THE ORGANIZATION (1971) on it.

    • Superb…….who's that guy hanging around though?
