Panasonic G9 with 12-60mm 3.5-5.6 Lens Kit $1399, Bonus $100 Gift Card, Bonus Battery Grip (Limited Store Stock) C&C @ JB Hi-Fi

180

The G9 mkII has recently been announced and, yes, this is a relatively oldish camera (released 2017), but is very highly regarded even by today's standards. For context, the last I checked, the mkII was up for preorder at over $3000

Can shoot video at 4k24/30/60fps with 10bit colour as well as up to 180fps at 1080p.

Seems like great value, but may require some co-ordination with your in-store sales rep to source the battery grip (limited store stock, no delivery available) if that is a selling point for you.

Half of that price would make it a great deal.

    • +14

You could say that about literally anything

      • -7

        I'm just saying the reality.

        • +2

          …again…

Where has this or similar packages been cheaper though?

I know the body by itself was ~$850 once or twice, but that's without the lens

          • -8

@Faro: I will leave a comment when it's realistically on sale at $699 with a bonus prime lens and a kit lens.

            • +6

@Spacexyz: Why did you pick that number? Why not hodl until $89 with lens and tripod?

            • +4

@Spacexyz: See you in 2036 when you update us on your "very good" condition "only used once, selling due to unwanted gift that I forgot about" eBay purchase.

              We'll all be kicking ourselves

              • @Faro: That's so funny 🤣

      • Not a koala mattress.

    • +1

A tenth would be even better! A hundredth even better still! <eyeroll. Emoji>

      • If they are not paying me to take the camera. Is it even a deal?

        /s

  • An mft sensor in a body that's the same size as a ff body. I miss my gx1 =(

  • +2

should update title to reflect lens is 12-60mm 3.5-5.6, its no slouch and great value. Decent for a 'kit' lens which I would feel pretty comfortable valuing at 350-400 resale if brand new.

i think this deal is a no brainer if you want a g9 and can find the grip (and actually want it) - the grip is harder to resell.

    • I've been using the grip the last couple days (we spoke on my other post) and I quite like it. I have bigger hands and the grip makes it feel a bit sturdier for me.

      • +1

i use have grips for all my cameras , i just feel weird without it

    • You've linked to a G90, not a G9. They are different cameras and you tried to mislead me with this same link on the last post.

You're also incorrect about the 4:2:2.

Since it has received several firmware updates, the G9 can record at 10bit, 4:2:2 internally at 4k24/25/30

  • +1

Should mention the time limitation on 4K recording (10 minutes on 4K 60fps). 10-bit colour is 4:2:0 unless you use an external recorder I think (then it is 4:2:2 10-bit).

One selling point of G9 is its ability to be powered from the USB port, but the battery grip is handy. As an owner of G9, I am not sure I would recommend it in 2023 (prefer something with phase detect autofocus and the 10 minutes limit is a bit annoying).

    • -1

You still seem to be in a minority of people who wouldn't recommend it in 2023 considering its capabilities and price. A GH6 is more video capable, but also over double this price.

      • -1

GH5 was around the same price when I bought mine. I don't know how much it is currently. Basically, if I had a choice again, I would have gone for GH5 instead.

I thought G9 was a good choice because it has good features for photos. However, for photos, I still prefer APS-C or Full Frame. 2 years ago, phase detect auto focus video cameras were more expensive. I haven't checked prices now.

    • +3

      2023

as someone with an a7iii and a range of lens as my main serious camera , i got no problems with recommending g9 in 2023 (for the right price)

      • It is a fun toy for people on a limited budget. For people with full frame and APS-C lenses, I think MFT f/3.5-5.6 isn't going to be that great. Obviously, we are basing it on the currently overpriced lens prices. That's the thing which annoys me with MFT at the moment. When I had my first MFT, lenses were 2-3 times cheaper and Panasonic was offering a free prime lens promotion. For the prices of MFT lenses now, it's just hard to get excited.

  • This or Sony A6400 as a travel camera?

    • +2

      U got any glass?
Do you want to do video

If no and no I reckon Sony.

    • If you don't have any Panasonic lens, go Sony A6400. While 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens in this kit is versatile, you can certainly notice a difference between APS-C and MFT. Sony A6400 has phase detect autofocus. You want that for video. No 4K recoding time limit is also good.

One gripe I have with G9 is while Panasonic allowed a quick hack for their earlier cameras to break the 4K recording limit with a few button presses, G9 is not allowed to do that (but apparently certain regions of G9 can still break the limit with the button press hack - not sure).

      • +1

I don't know why you're so intent on belittling the G9, dude. You don't like it, that's fine. But that's a you thing and not the general rule.

@ttkc, my suggestion would be to do some research. There's a fair few videos comparing the two on YouTube.

        Quick things to consider:
Is your phone good enough? If you don't plan to really dive into photography or video and just want some decent-looking memories, see what you can do with your phone. Annecdotal example: I bought an a5000 and took it overseas years ago thinking it would be great for photography and ended up using my Pixel 2 for a majority of the trip. The differences were negligible to me at that stage.

If you're intent on one of these two cameras, however, the a6400 is smaller which may be a plus. If you like the idea of video and can live with a 10 minute record limit at high frame rates/resolution (I think most can), the Lumix has the edge with stabilisation and colour depth. Otherwise people seem to like both. Most don't actually have much of an issue with the micro four-thirds thing either.

        • Unlike other people, I often point out the issues I have with the products I own. G9 is not the only product. It's somewhat intentional because we all tend to be more attached to the products we own.

It's not just the 10 minutes limit on 4K/60. 4K/30 time limit is also annoying because it defeats the purpose of being able to power G9 with that USB 3.0 port. Furthermore, G9 is technically capable of recording more than 10 minutes at 60fps. With G9, you also need to think about shutter angle in video.

MFT f/3.5-5.6 isn't that great. I have a MFT lens that's f/1.7, but let's face it, in full frame equivalent, it is f/3.4. So, with MFT f/3.5, you are basically looking at f/7 full frame equivalent. Once you factored that in, it just feels MFT lenses are overpriced at the moment.

  • I would say no. camera has been under $900 and lens was $250 a few days ago (prime).

    • +1

      under 900

i think not since i last posted that amazon deal actually…been watching prices again for a friend who expressed interest in a g9 (but didnt want 2nd hand)

      • correct, it will happen again.

unless you need the camera now/soon then worth the wait

      • I think cost of the body is less of an issue. I doubt that $250 prime was that expensive when the body was $900.

There are more choices now from other camps. The lenses I have now cost 3 times more. It's just hard for me to recommend to mates.

    • +1

This lens was not $250 a few days ago. I was watching lens prices frequently through the sale period.

Currently it sits at $566 on prime. Even if you had a time machine, $850 + $566 = $1416 and that doesn't include the grip or gift card.

      • might have been a lightning deal stacked on an amazon DE or US stocked lens?

there was some pretty slick prices on some samyangs like the 12mm (200 something)

        • It was AU stock. Olympus 45mm f1.2 pro lens was $850

      • BUT, it was. why would i lie? I had it on my cart but decided to pass.

        • Well I stand corrected. I didn't see any such prices and I guess nobody decided to post them here. Even then, $1100 plus a time machine w/o a grip or gift card

          • +2

            @Faro:

nobody decided to post them here

many of the good prices i saw were <10 QTY so cant post anyway

          • @Faro: correct, i didnt neg the deal because it is the best at this point. but I would wait, camera is old and price will just keep going down (unless panasonic discontinued it )

            • @snvl: its funny , i thought everyone was saying it was discontinued/replaced….but the g9ii is like.. over double the price…

              • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: yep, g9II price is insanely high.

                • @snvl: idk what i expected lol

                  • @Jimothy Wongingtons: The thing with G9 II is more about hoping Panasonic will clear some G9 at discounted price. Furthermore, it just goes to show Panasonic is no longer that appealing for cost effective quality mirrorless. Also, why is now such a great now to buy a G9? Generally, wait for Boxing Day sale is a good idea. G9 is a dated camera so what's the rush? The 12-60mm lens is overpriced, so is the 25mm f/1.7.

Or, the thinking is that retailers are starting to clear their G9 stock? Sure, once you factored in the battery grip, the price seems reasonable. But it is still a bit perplexing. One reason to go G9 (over say GH5) is its ability to be powered by the USB port and G9's battery is decent enough. JB is good at throwing in goodies to entice people to buy.

    • Agreed, but unless we can post cheaper deals with exactly the same items, OP won't accept that. MFT lenses are overpriced now, but I don't believe that's a reason to justify it is a great idea to get into MFT ecosystem right now (coz. the amount of saving you get from this deal, based on current RRP of those items).

      • MFT lenses are overpriced now,

largely yea unless you can stack a sale with a cb offer

eg i recently got from amazon a Olympus 25mm F1.8 at $318 with a 50 eftpos card which i thought was a great price.

        • Well, My Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 was given to me by Panasonic for free when I bought my camera. Even at that time, camera stores were selling it for $90.

That's my main issue. Also, I'd rather grab my DSLR's 50mm prime lens. MFT f/1.7 is still f/3.4 in full frame. When I use that MFT prime lens, I often feel that it doesn't behave like a f/1.7 (too used to DSLR for photos).

        • Speaking on that topic, I noticed the Lumix 25mm 1.7 is $215 on Amazon. I only have one lens being the one pictured in this deal, but have heard a 50mm (full frame equivalent and whatnot) is a must-have lens for a standard kit?

          Is the $215 price decent?

          • @Faro: 215 is pretty much what it goes for normally on amazon (this is also on my watch list) - i think best price in last few years was more like $180

            • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Yeah, I was just thinking of using the gift card from this deal to bring it down after a potential price match at JB. Otherwise I think I'll just use the gift card to buy movies which doesn't motivate me to actually go outside and use the camera

          • @Faro: Panasonic gave me that prime lens for free. So, do you think I will recommend it for $215? It was $90 from stores (before bargaining with the store, I only just asked for the price at the time).

Don't get that lens for now. 12-60mm 3.5-5.6 is more versatile. Low light… honestly, if you really care about it, MFT won't cut it. Also, I assume you are good at changing lens (i.e. hold the camera and the lens upside down while doing it, in a non-dusty area).

            • @netsurfer: I feel like I made it exceedingly clear that I'm relatively new to this on the previous post that I made that you commented on.

I also clearly stated I have exactly one lens, so am not an expert on changing lenses. I don't understand why you have to word things in such a way that is intentionally posed to expose my lack of specific details - especially when it comes to the past like the prices you keep bringing up.

And, again, like I said it the last post, I want to shoot short films. The bokeh effect/depth of field on a 25mm lens is more desirable for the types of shots I have in mind when compared to the more versatile zoom kit lens.

              • @Faro: You have an A5000 right? So, I thought you have some experience.

Anyway, with MFT's f-value, you need to x2. So, f/1.7 MFT is actually f/3.4. That is important when it comes to bokeh, in terms of how easy it is to achieve it, the "real" f value matters. Basically, it is harder to achieve bokeh in MFT. That's also the reason I feel MFT lenses are overpriced, because their f values are hyped up.

However, it doesn't only come down to f value. It is easier to get bokeh at 150mm vs 50mm (or in MFT's term 75mm vs 25mm). The easiest way to think about it is all those sports shots on newspaper. You see the sportsperson in focus, with background blurred. Those are generally done with 300mm+ lens. Obviously, with a 300mm lens for example (or 150mm for MFT), the area that's in focus is a lot smaller so too much handshake will lead to a blurry photo.

You cannot have everything unfortunately. If you want bokeh, full frame is the easiest. One reason people like MFT for videos is it is easier to get things in focus.

              • @Faro: There is a site which allows you to compare with sample photos of various f values and sensor size. Can't find it now, sorry. But as an example from another site:

                Full Frame f/2.8 200mm:
                https://i0.wp.com/photofocus.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/…

                Micro 4/3rd (Panasonic) f/2.8 100mm:
                https://i0.wp.com/photofocus.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/…

Look at the brick wall at the back. Also, it is more common to see examples in the telephoto range. It's the same for mobile phone cameras. Yes, low f value is generally needed, but much easier to do it in the telephoto range.

Anyway, I tried my Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 lens, it is fairly easy to achieve bokeh effect at f/1.7. Obviously, the framing of the photo matters. I thought you have to use manual mode or aperture priority mode, but it can be done with intelligent auto mode as well.

      • +1

I hate using this expression because I think it's redundant and quite silly, but "this is Ozbargain".

The specific bundle I've posted represents good value versus the current market (the definition of 'bargain') and holds its own against previous deals considering what it includes.

        • Easy, just let OZBer vote for it.

My thinking is this, MFT lenses (and likely all lenses) seem to have prices adjusted like GPUs during Covid and Crypto mining. Will they eventually drop back to more reasonable prices like GPUs? Also, are we 100% sure there will be no further sale later on? Weren't there also discounted gift cards that could be used to lower the total price further? (JB was one of stores).

When my mate wanted to buy stuff from JB last year, I told him to get discounted gift cards. I comment a lot on SSD deals and I quote all time best prices a lot.

        • -1

The reality is majority of OZBers are only interested in true bargains. Digital photography / videography is an expensive hobby.

          • G9 was overpriced before Covid and is still overpriced.
          • That battery grip requires another battery to extend total battery time. I don't think the extra battery is included.
          • There is a big fat margin on micro 4/3 lenses (and DSLR lenses in general). I got my MFT lenses from previous Boxing Day sales. The sales reps offered me brand new lenses at >50% below RRP. That should be no surprise for people who have DSLR or mirrorless for some time.

I got my lenses dirt cheap. I also got my extra original battery quite cheap. All up, I paid less than this ($1065 total (not counting discount vouchers used) and I still feel that was too expensive). An extra prime lens + an extra original battery should be able to roughly offset that battery grip. This deal (with 15% discount cards) - $100 gift card is $1104. Obviously, if you prefer the battery grip, then it is a better deal.
