Lowest price yet on this 4TB 2.5" SATA SSD from SanDisk that offers TLC flash memory with DRAM cache. Assuming there's no component swapping the average write speed is ~441 MB/s to fill the whole drive according to this review which I think is really good for an SSD, as many drop down to slow speeds around 150 MB/s after intensive writes.

It offers a sequential read up to 560 MB/s and sequential write up to 530 MB/s with 600TBW endurance and a 5 year warranty. This is perfectly fine for use as an OS drive, game storage, general storage or with a portable enclosure.

  • Insane prices, it's a disappointment GPUs will never have the same treatment. With another run projected next year, better buckle up… again lol.

    • Another run?

  • Thats pretty epic deal for 4TB SSD

  • Have had a SanDisk ultra II 240gb for around 7 years now as an OS drive with near daily use, software says health is around 70% and still going strong. Amazing drive.

    • +1

That one is QLC with DRAM. The pSLC cache is tiny at 80GB so it'll slow down to around 170 MB/s in sustained writes.

      • +1

if you're looking for actual speed then you should be going pcie. gen 4 but if all you want is storage backup then the 8tb model speed is enough.

        • +3

PCIe Gen4 is overkill for almost all cases anyway. 2.5" is always good when you've exhausted all your M.2 slots ;)

  • +2

This drive has 600 TBW endurance which for a 4TB TLC drive with DRAM is extremely low

Even the lowest tier DRAM-less 4TB QLC drives now have 900 TBW endurance

Meaning the SanDisk 60800 96L TLC NAND in this drive is SD card grade - good for casual writing at consistent speed but do not use it for anything intensive thinking it is a TLC level drive like the $315 $298 870 EVO

    • +4

Thats 10TB of writes per month for 5 years (or 5TB of writes per month for 10 years). Thats more than enough for 99% of people.

I'd like to know a use case for anyone doing that amount of writes to a drive like this.

      • +7

Exactly. He has a habit of nitpicking on other people's deals. Especially given this suffers from no major loss in speed with sustained writes, so it's perfectly fine for "intensive thinking".

        • +3

That amount of writes is basically a video editing scratch disk for a full time editor, in which case you arent buying this drive.

It's like stating that a car self combusts at 400Km/h so doint buy a car.

He has a habit of nitpicking on other people's deals.

So clear that you are transparent

Only you could make that statement with a straight face:

          1. Down voted this Lenovo tablet deal near midnight
          2. Had a mini breakdown during the discussion and mass down voted all the comments
          3. Stopped being emotional, recovered your senses and reversed all the down votes for both the deal and comments

The fact that SanDisk have used poor quality flash in this drive is not a slight on you but rather something that people considering buying this drive need to be aware of

          • +2

@Look Up: You were incorrect about the status of that tablet's custom ROM support and it still stands. It's no different to selling a car with no wheels and saying it still goes because it can be pushed.

There's nothing personal about this. You are nitpicking on this SSD. Unless you're doing significant, significant writes this is more than enough for a lot of tasks.

        • +1

Agreed. Unnecessary use of negging too.

      • +1

        Have you considered write amplification?

Depending on file size and file system, 10TB of writes can easily burn through 40TB of endurance and even 100TB if the usage pattern is particularly poor

Bottom line this drive has an A-tier engine (Marvell + DRAM) with a D-tier body (SD card grade TLC) and priced only $35 less than the superior 870 EVO with 4X the endurance

        • +5

Thats fine, but again, this is OzBargain where people want to store Linux Distros, games and photos. It's not a hardcore techy forum. This drive is fine for all users except yourself ;).

    • what is anything intensive?

      • +1

Video editing, that kind of thing with lots of big files.

    • TBW endurance does matter if this is for your work PC that you will drive daily.
I would go with the Samsung one, but only if I have used up my M.2 slots.

    • +2

Searching "Samsung 870 EVO 4TB" definitely doesn't fill me with confidence…

"Why are so many Samsung 870 EVO drives failing"
"Samsung 870 Evo Dies, Major Issue 2TB & 4TB To Be Aware Of, Be Careful People!!"

  • Are there any decently priced NAS's built for 2.5" SSD's? I'm looking to put a small one with a couple of drives in my network cabinet, 4TB should do, with decent app support so I can use it as a local automated phone backup when I get in range of my network.

From what I've found the only real option is to buy a NAS designed for 3.5" drives (such as a Synology DS224) then put these 2.5" drives in, seems unnecessarily large. I'd like to use some SSD's like these to keep things cool and quiet.

    • +1

Do research on SSD's in a NAS. As long as you dont put them in RAID you'll be ok. RAID is constantly reading/writing to disk and can kill an SSD TBW very quickly.

      • Ah bummer, thanks for the heads up I was planning on RAID 1.

        • RAID 1 might be ok…. i think its RAID5/6/10 etc with parity data that can have issues.

  • Is there a reason to pick this over a M.2 PCIe QLC drive for about the same price (or not much more) if I'm gonna use it as an external drive?

  • Is the Samsung better for 30 or so dollars more?

    https://amzn.asia/d/gn9UR5H

    • Significantly higher endurance at 2,400TBW, so if you're planning on writing hundreds and hundreds of TB of data it'll hold up better in the long term. As for performance it's no different to this in that it can maintain fast speeds under sustained writes.

  • How does this compare with the Lexar NM790?

    • +1

That one is m.2 nvme. This one is sata. Totally different kettle of fish.

If you have a m.2 slot free then totally ignore this deal and look around for what you need in the way of an m.2 drive, there's a lot of options.

      • Oh true, I didn't see that. Thanks!

  • waiting till they break the 50-60aud per tb

  • Any deal for 1Tb or 2 TB ssd? Thank you!

  • great deal OP, this is great deals for old laptop users who don't want to change the laptop but want to increase the speed and 4TB is kinda gem for a system.
