Upgrading The TV after 7 Years - Mini LED or OLED or UST?

We purchased a clearance 55” TV 7 years ago. We are looking at upgrading the TV and this time, we decided to upgrade to something newer than looking at clearance items.

We went shopping and so many terminologies were thrown at us. After a bit of reading, I understood the most popular ones are either Mini LED or OLED TVs. I’m also reading about the buzz around Ultra Short Throw Projectors and they seem to be a good option if you are willing to spend over $5,000.

We narrowed down to TCL 85” C845, Samsung 85” QN95C and Samsung 77” S90C. The first two are Mini LED and the last one is OLED.

I wanted to reach out to this community to see if you can help and if I’m missing out any other good model out there.

Staying true to the community, once we decide, I will set an alert and wait for some discounts 🫣😅

  • First up decide on what size TV screen you want. You've got a 55 inch and going to 85inch is a significant change. Then you are also looking at a 77 incher as well. There are certain recommendations for TV size and viewing distance. Maybe decide on that first and then move to the tech choice.

    • Yeah, OP needs to decide what size. Also what other things they want, eg, wide viewing angle needed? sports? bright room? gaming? etc. These are all things only the OP knows and will impact the decision.

      • Sorry, I should have been clearer. 75-85” is our preference. Opted for 85” with Mini LED and the maximum size available on S90C, which is 77”.
The room is living room and the size is 6.5 by 7.5m with windows behind the couch. We are considering changing the tv/couch layout to suit.
We use it for watching tv shows and casual gaming. We have blinds down most of the time when the TV is on.

  • I'm a huge OLED fan, have OLED TVs and monitors, including a laptop, but I am strongly considering getting the TCL C845.

My living room has windows all along the back so we have to close the blinds when using the TV and the TCL is so bright that we might not need to control light as much. Where's your TV going and what is lighting like in that room?

    • We are replacing the living room TV and have windows right opposite to the TV. However, most of the time, those blinds are down.

From my understanding. Mini LED has higher brightness but OLEDs have better picture quality. Anyone who uses OLED, loves them. I can clearly see that from the comments here as well. My concern is the price difference and difference in picture quality in everyday scenarios.
Most of the consumption is online streaming with basic internet speeds. If the speed is not good, most times it drops to 720p or 1080p. So am I going to notice much difference between Mini LED and OLED?

    • Which OLED monitor and laptop do you have?

    • What TV did you end up getting? I'm in the same dilemma - really bright room with window opposite TV. We have a LG CX OLED but really struggling to watch at day time unless we close all blinds.

I like the TLC mini LED brightness and features, 85" is at a reasonable price too compared to the OLED of the same size. Considering upgrading so would be great to hear what you end up getting

  • I had been looking at similar thing, but my purpose is more for a replacement of computer monitor. Bought a Samsung ultrawide (32:9) gaming monitor a few years ago. However, since the resolution is 5120x1440, if I use that as multiview from 2 inputs each of them is only 27" 2.5K.

Back to the main story, QN85C and S90C are both of my choices, too. Personally, I am planning to get QN95C because it is much cheaper than Samsung OLEDs (at close screen sizes). In less than $5000, you can get 85" QN95C. Of course, Mini LEDs have light auras and also substantially heavier than OLEDs. If you prefer to hang that on wall, may be OLEDs are more suitable for you.

I don't have UST but a long throw with good distance-diagonal ratio (Benq X3000i). 3 metres from the wall projects about 110" which is 50% more watching area than 85". UST are not expensive if you are not chasing laser but even so you can find cheaper ones that made in China. LED light source is ideal between cost and lifecycle. The projector I have features very low input lag that is necessary for gaming. Projectors give you the largest screen dimension but the visual quality is worse than TVs even with a projector screen. BTW, premium projector screens are like $1500+ or you need to set up a room with block-out roller blinds and watch with lights off. Some people even paint the whole room in special black material for reducing reflections.

    Anyways, how about VR headsets?

The OLED will easily beat the others in picture quality.

If I were spending that sort of money I would be buying Sony or LG over Samsung, and I wouldn’t touch TCL (I watch a lot of sport).

I spent $4400 on an LG OLED 2 years ago, do not the regret the decision one bit.
From now on i will always buy an OLED/premium TV, for the time we put into it i think it is well worth it.

  • Go for new technology OLED/QLED branded tv as it will last for a long time, if you are using as main tv.
for occasional use any 4k tv will be OK.

  • I have OLED and there's no way I'd go to a projector.

    • I started seeing videos of Build Montage from NSW. He seems to rate USTs highly given you have a dark room and a large wall to project it to.
Obviously no match for a OLED, but some might prefer larger size for reduced picture quality?

Got the TCL initially - great colour and sound

Unfortunately very loud coil whine when screen is showing blacks

So returned and paid extra to get the Samsung QN95C and no issues so far

We are also now juggling between 85” Qn95c and 77” s90c. Bigger screen versus better picture quality. 😿
Rtings mentioned (https://youtu.be/rWuwUb-7vjo?si=o3OZIuvgKvqV9hM6) Samsung oleds don’t handle pixel cleaning properly compared to Sony and lg to prevent oled burn in.

    • Did you get the TV from brick & mortar shop OR from an online store? How was the return experience? Thanks

      • +1

TGG brick and mortar (due to using the 15% off gift cards instead of going to their Commercial store)

They were good about it, had to go through TCL first and send through some photographic evidence but it was relatively quick and they advised as it was within 14 days, I could return to TGG under DOA.

Went back to TGG, forwarded the email from TCL, and they arranged for someone to pick up the TV (policy included disconnecting all peripherals/mount and installing the new TV).

I think it would have been fine had I asked for a straight refund vs a replacement also, given how soon after purchase the return was

Thanks everyone. Ended up ordering the Samsung 77” S90C this morning. I know there is S95C but since it’s not going to be wall mounted, the one connect box didn’t matter much.

At the moment, s90c and s95c are the same price at JB Hi Fi but got them price match S90C to appliance central for $5480 instead of the current promotion $6795. Not sure when the next big price drop is going to be so pulled the trigger.

    • Enjoy :)

    • Congratulations! How do you like the S90c so far?
