Been eyeing this since a scorching summer is on the way and a daily hot espresso is certainly out of the question. These were retailing for about ~$45 just a couple of days ago, so glad I waited.

Usually dispatched within 5 to 10 days.

I've heard dark roasts are suitable for making cold brew, will Aldi's award winning Lazzio beans do?

I understand you're intentionally trying to be toxic but this why we're drinking cold brew this summer.

jv of course it's going to be scorching! championship was a cakewalk indeed!

  • Scored!

  • Ordered one as well, thanks OP

    Loving the instructions:

"Just coffee powder and water make ice coffee. Pour a small amount of water to make the whole powder moist, and drip in the shape of "draw"."

  • Thanks, ordered one

I've just been making affogatos at home in the heat - espresso and ice cream :)

    • +1

A bit more calorie dense than cold brew.

    • When using this to make affogatos at home, does the coffee taste weaker than a traditionally made espresso affogato?
What is your coffee/water ratio for a good home brew affogato?

      • +1

I use an espresso machine - my typical shot is 14.5g coffee to 30g water as a ratio. I think it tastes pretty good and I prefer it to what I get in restaurants but that could just be me.

        • Thank you admira, that is very helpful. I will try your "recipe".

Cold brew are best made with single blend origin beans to create emphasis on coffee flavours. Extract on coarse grind and normally I brew over 24 hours in the fridge. Cold water extracts the sweetness and flavour profile, and doesn't create harsh sour/bitterness like espresso.

    • medium or dark roast?

      • Dark all the way.

Its too subtle if you use a medium roast.

Also make sure the grinds are not too fine otherwise it takes forever to pour water into the filter

      • You want something with bright acidity. Ask any of your local specialty roasters for recommendations.

        • Is there a way of drinking coffee where you don't want bright acidity? Maybe it's just me and my partner but I've found when making espresso, latte and americano that we prefer coffee described as "bright". Looking forward to seeing how coldbrew does.

    • Do you guys find that old beans do better in cold brews instead of in Aeropress/pour overs?

I can never get through my beans quick enough (Aeropress) so am thinking can use them for cold brews when they are old and getting a little tangy.

      • Hey Dr. Spaceman, I find cold brew really mellows out the beans so the old beans would probably be more palatable in cold brew, but the other advantage is as your open can/bag of beans degrade you prep the cold brew 24H in advance and it can last in the fridge for at least a week so at that point your beans stop oxidizing.

    • Does it increase caffeine? I get hella headache afterwards. Worth it tho.

      • Yes, the longer the grinds are in the water, the more caffeine is extracted. Filter and aeropress already has more caffeine than an espresso shot, imagine what a cold brew soaking overnight would have. That said, you can always drink less or dilute with cold water/milk. Delicious but one cup will send you flying.

        • I find that cold brew does give an extra buzz, and extract more caffeine. You can get flavor results in 4-8 hour, just remove the basket and refrigerate.

You can always add a touch of your preferred milk/alternatives.

My go to choice is to find bean profiles with fruity tones - single origin from Ethiopia is good.

    • If we use Breville Smart Grinder, which size should be the right one?
Or if we use K4 Kingrinder, how many clicks? 75?

  • +4

Can definitely vouch for this with the Aldi Dark Roast Beans ($12.99 for 1kg). Grind up 100g of beans fairly coarsely and fill with water up to the top of the grinds.
I leave mine for around 18-24 hours and then decanter into another bottle. Can drink straight or with a dash of milk.

    • i prefer the medium for the coldbrew but agreed on good value..

    • I'd say it's worth the few extra dollars to get the Aldi single origin beans, these are quite good for the cold brew method.

    • I ordered beans that are ground for AeroPress, will that be coarse enough?

    • from your experience, did you notice the difference in terms of alertness from cold brewing the coffee compared to normal?

I've done cold brewed coffee before, but never in the form of keeping it brewed for 24 hours - apparently, the caffeine hit is noticeable.

      • I get a massif hit but mabe placebo dunno. Each person gets different effex tho.

    • I tried the medium roast and currently have Columbia and I find them quote plain and flat tasting. I've only tried LimeBlue which I enjoyed and a friend gave me some Airjo, I think, which was nice as well. I would prefer cheaper beans, will probable pay double to get ones I enjoy next time.

  • What's with all these Hario deals recently? I'm tempted.

    • Japanese made/quality products with discounts and free shipping using prime from amazon JP at comparable/cheaper prices than local or kmart equivalents.

I went nuts last time buying a whole lot of hario coffee gear, including this one.

You won't regret any of it.

      • Just don't ever order their grinder with the ceramic burrs and nice glass jar. It's incredibly garbage.

Got this earlier in the year and it is worth it - even though I have only used it twice!

    Strainer Frame: Polypropylene, Mesh: Polyester

    • +4

Why folk negging this? It's good to know if the mesh is polyester as it can release microplastics when used. Multiple studies have shown this occurs with polyester tea bags and polyester clothing.

      • Folks are rude!

I've seen stainless steel mesh chambers which would be better.

    • +1

Isn't polypropylene meant to be one of the better plastics for food related items?

The polyester mesh is concerning though. Might rip it out and try to add stainless steel mesh instead.

    • +1

Yeah tbh im thinking ol m8 kmart might suit my needs better for cold brew tea (not coffee drinker)

      https://www.kmart.com.au/product/glass-jug-with-stainless-st…

The hario looks nice but theres no seal (i think), might get fridge smells? (Lol my fridge is clean thank you! But still). The cold brew bottle fixes this but still, theres that plastic issue.

Originally i was just going to use an old 1L glass bottle i have with no filter lol. But this post made me look into it some more.

Been using one of these for a few years. serious bit of kit.

  • absolutely love this throughout summer got one last year and didn't use any other method for coffee for three months straight.

  • +1

I've owned this one and the Kmart version, there's no difference in the outcome. Save yourself a few dollars

Made in Japan vs Made in China though.

      • -6

Who would know more about brewing tea, China or Japan 🤔

        • Since this is marketed as a coffee cold brew - neither would know better for this product.

  • 1000ml or 600ml?

    • +1

Go for the 1000ml. It's good for about a week after brewing.

      • Excellent. Thanks.

    • +1

Definitely 1L, maybe I drink too much coffee but it's only 2 days worth for me.

  • Can this do (hot brewing) tea?

    • +1

      According to (translated) reviews, yes.

  • +2

These are great, about to unpack mine now the weather is heating up. Usually take coldbrew to work when it's warmer instead of paying $6 or a coffee or drinking the crap they provide in the kitchen.

    • +1

Someone send this man an OZB badge. Great work dude. I haven't paid for a coffee in years. $5 - dreamin.

  • +1

Personally wasn't a huge fan of mine. Ended up settling for the toddy cold brew system and been happy with that for the last 3 years or so.

    • Care to share any pros and cons of either product to assist with my option paralysis? :D

  • +2

Got this from previous deal for ~$12. The glass portion is pretty nice, but the plastic is very cheap. Filter is also a little bit annoying to clean. For the price, it's not bad, but definitely not worth $45 or whatever the RRP is.

    • +1

This won't fit inside the side fridge tho

  • +6

I'm a cold brew veteran, pretty much the only coffee I ever drink. My 2c worth:-

    a) the insistence that you need a dark roast is nonsense, IMO. Medium roast is fine.
    b) the insistence that it needs to be a coarse grind is also nonsense. A fine grind works fine and is preferable in my view in terms of releasing the flavour

you dont need a toddy or specialised vessel, a normal glass jar is fine. The reason is that after a day or two the grind will settle at the bottom of the jar and form a fairly solid plug. You can basically just pour the coffee off the top without getting grounds in your cup.

The trick is to leave it for at least a couple of days. It may be a bit watery and insipid if you dont. Also use plenty of grounds.
The caffeine content can be rather high. You want to put a fair bit of milk in there. If I drink a full glass neat I will get hot flushes and the jitters are pretty bad.

I nuke it in the work microwave for 2 minutes and drink. Its pretty convenient that way.

    • +2

What’s your coffee to water ratio?

      • +1

Not op but I started at 1:8 as recommended by the majority of websites I checked. Then adjusting for taste and beans and grind etc, I ended up most often at 1:6, and that was using a French Press.
