    R7-7735U (Zen3+) for anyone wondering

    • +3

Which is a 6800 for anyone not familiar with AMD naming scheme.

That's RDNA2 graphics isn't it. Not latest but not too shabby

  • Could you use this for gaming? Plugged in to a decent monitor. I’d like to be able to play the RE4 remake
Sorry I’ve got no idea with this stuff but would love a new laptop that’s great for work and good enough for gaming

If you need a portable laptop that you will often carry around then this is probably good enough for gaming. If it's just going to sit on a desk all the time then better off getting a laptop with a dedicated GPU and VRAM

    i7 gaming rig

  • How would this laptop hold up coming from a 5yr old Dell XPS 13? Looking for a lightweight replacement. Important features are good trackpad, keyboard and bright screen. Not too fussed on battery life as this would come with me between work and office.

CPU will be a lot faster. It generally feels smoother when multitasking due to more cores.

Chassis is very light, under 1kg. Made of Aluminium.

Keyboard and trackpad not as good as XPS, but can't complain based on price point.

Screen brightness is 400-450 nits. Works fine when outdoors.

  • What are people's thoughts on this laptop versus the msi currently on sale at jb hifi? Mainly for use as a travel laptop.

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/msi-prestige-13evo-13-3-f…

    • I've looked at that MSI a few times, big selling point for it is the large 75 Whr battery. Not sure what the HP in this deal is, had a quick look online and couldn't find it. I'd imagine it would be around the 50 Whr max.

The intel CPU in that MSI is a lot newer than the AMD too and probably has a lot better performance but gotta look at the power that it consumes in turn.

    • 256GB on MSi vs this on 512GB storage

1920x1200 on the MSi. I feel that with 13.3" 1920x1080 is sufficient for such screen size. But if you plug onto a monitor then this argument isn't really relevant.

lastly, $1274 vs $1097 though. Not heaven and hell difference but still $177 there.

Just IMO, I'd go for the HP.

      Advantages of the HP Aero:

      1. The i5 1340p in the MSI technically only has 4p cores the rest are E cores. Whilst the AMD CPU has the full range of 8 P cores.
2.The AMD CPU also has much better iGPU vs the Intel and much better at gaming if you need it.
      2. The AMD CPU is much more power efficient compared to the Intel with a TDP of 15w vs 28-64w.
      3. If you use the reputable benchmark website Passmark. The 7735u is faster than the 1340p. Scoring over 21000 points vs 20000 points.

I also think some of Officeworks specifications are wrong and the screen is also 1920*1200

      • Last year's HP Aero had a 2560x1200 screen - I bought a Ryzen 5 version. Great screen.

Not sure about this year's model ? Hard to know for sure - the Aero 13.3" doesn't feature on HP's AU website.

Ryzen 5 model also dropped in price to $947 and still the better deal

The $150 extra for this Ryzen 7 does not give noticeable gains:

CPU +3% single thread and +18% multi thread performance
RDNA 2 based Radeon 680M iGPU is double the speed of the Radeon 660M which translates to an RX 550 vs RX 6400

16GB RAM is also too small when used as both system RAM and VRAM for the 680M

Zen 4 7840U + 32GB RAM + RDNA 3 based Radeon 780M is still the one to get if you need fast integrated graphics

    • So the ryzen 5 for $200 less at OW would be fine for playing older titles like COD4 and Rome Total War series?

  • Thanks for the replies.
I did look at the ryzen 5 model but none in WA and unavailable online.
Can order the ryzen 7 so looks like might be the way to go.

  • Arhhhh
    No USB-C charging.
    That's me out.

I was going to return this and take this one.

  • Just noticed the cheaper ryzen 5 model:

Does anyone know if this model is metal as per this deal post?
