HTC vs iPhone

Advice please! I need a new phone and have been a HTC person for years but the last one was pretty average (HTC Sensation XL) - has anyone used both HTC and iPhone? Which would you recommend? I will be on the Telstra network….

Thank heaps!

I know it goes against the whole consumer concept of this site, but do you actually need a new phone? The sensation XL isn't that old - in fact you can still buy it.

If you must buy a new phone, I would go for a One X - as they're really cheap on Kogan atm.

    Price-wise, Android will win easily.
iPhone versus Android versus Windows is a very personal decision. Just cause someone hated Android, but loved iOS doesn't mean you will. (personally you couldn't pay me to use iOS, being an Android user, I've found it to be frustratingly unintuitive to use and locked down)

iPhone versus Sensation XL (or other large HTCs) is also a personal decision, you're used to a MASSIVE 4.7" screen, can you cope with the 'puny' 4" iPhone5 let alone the even smaller 4S (which will be more on par price-wise)?

  • My Sensation XL has a badly cracked screen, the screen jams all the time, the antenna is terrible and the reception on my calls is awful. I bought it outright from MobileCiti and had issues from the day I bought it so this time I am going to go thru Telstra on a plan and hopefully I will be covered for any issues.

  • Why are Ozbargainers considering buying iPhones. Isn't it a phone for old farts/teeny boppers?

HTC build quality is generally not as good as Samsung/Apple/Nokia. I'd buy the GS3 if upgrading now.

  • Price wise and specwise - HTC!
The new HTC One X has a quad core Tegra 3 processor, 4.7" corning gorilla screen, 1GB Ram, Awesome 8MP 1080p quality camera, Android 4.0, more and is super speedy..

You'll be a fool to buy an iPhone and waste your money.. overpriced aF too.

You can pickup a HTC One X for $450 BRAND NEW easily (aus versions).

  • If you like Android, don't want to pay more for an iPhone, and can stand HTC Sense, then I say go for a new HTC (if that's all you're looking for). As above, the decision to switch to the iPhone will mostly involve your sentiments regarding the OS.

If you have an open mind about it, then I recommend looking into other Android OEMs. I think the new Nexus phone (or a range of them) is being announced on the 5th of November (hopefully!), so that might be worth considering.

  • HTC. No question.

  • The HTC One X would be best, because it's newer, more powerful and has a quad core, however it's the biggest out of the three.

  • I am using the One X and it is an awesome phone for music and especially photos and videos, plus you can get local stock with 2 years warranty for about $500

  • HTC One SV

  • I'm an Android guy, at least partly as there are better bargains to be had for unlocked phones imported (e.g. Kogan) and used with Optus service resellers (e.g. vaya).

That said, you've noted a preference for buying on a plan through Telstra. If doing that an iPhone 5 is probably better value. It should be pretty reliable, have good support if anything goes wrong, and better resale value should you wish to upgrade in the future. Telstra use domestic stock so (relatively) overcharge for Android phones, where Apple phones are expensive everywhere. There's only $7 per month difference on a "Small" plan between an HTC One XL ($60), a Samsung Galaxy S3 4G ($66) and an iPhone 5 ($67) and they're all $80 per month on the "Medium" plan (Wow that's pricey!). I'd suggest both the iPhone and Galaxy are better "value" than the HTC at those prices.

Ultimately, if price isn't so much a factor as you're suggesting by using a Telstra plan, the user experience should be a determining factor. That will come down to personal preference, neither is objectively "better" - suggest going into a shop and seeing what you think of the iPhone interface, form factor, etc. vs Android.

  • Coming from a droid, wouldn't you already be locked into the google ecosystem?

This is a real pain if you "switch" from one to the other. I have a 4S and I really do not see any point in getting another iPhone/ipad (I have an ipad2 as well). My next phone/tab will be an android for sure. However, that means almost $200 worth of apps and other stuff will be rendered a complete waste. :(

Prefer the quality of the UI (w/o jailbreaks/rooting) and the relative freedom. Also, Apple maps is the single most horrible piece of software on the iOS atm. I'm in WA and it is completely unreliable.

Ive had iPhone, Android and Windows Phone 7. Id pick iPhone as the winner. Best support for apps and usually a quality build.
