How long will those points expire?

    • +6

Rex Points expire on a rolling 36-month basis from when they were earned if there is no ongoing activity. You must earn into, or redeem from, your account to be deemed ‘active’. This does not include point transfers.

  • +6

Looking at the redemption table, not sure if the redemption rates are really that great (particularly when flying business class). They have gone with dynamic pricing, with 3 tiers (ultimate, getaway, and anytime) with 'ultimate' being the most restrictive (but cheapest) and 'anytime' being the most readily available (apparently all seats) (though most expensive).

In addition, pricing is not distance based like Qantas/Virgin; with rates being calculated as a discount of published fares for that route.
For example SYD to MEL is cheaper that SYD to CAN (7400 vs 7900 for economy ultimate fares).

Looking at a SYD to MEL flight:
    Economy: 7400, 9600, 30900
    Business: 17400, 22600, 34900

Not really liking the redemption rates vs Qantas and Virgin. Obviously it depends what the point earn rates are going to be like on credit cards etc, though I feel that Qantas and Virgin might up their redemption rates in the medium term to be on par with rex's new scheme (and keep their accountants happy).

Maybe not a good example, that is the case with every airline

Not surprising as Guangzhou (CAN) is a fair bit further than SYD. Or are you talking about Canberra (CBR)…

    Sic em Rex!

Anyone born after 1988 won't get that :-D

born after '88 and I get it.

Here's the key question: Are Rex points transferable?

    • +2

Doesn't look like it. Can only find information on family pooling

    • Transferable where ?

Within Rex (to other people?) ?

      External to Rex (other programs?)

      • Can only set up family pooling at this stage (points that get earned after the pooling is setup can be auto transferred to another family member).

You can't do manual transfers to other people/family. You can't transfer points to other programs at this stage either.

Qantas going bust in 12 months (or perhaps ever) is wishful thinking, as awful as things have been lately.

    • +7

What a childish comment about a 100+ year company

        • +19

And here I was thinking you were upset about something actually wrong they did like stiffing employees on wages or customers on retained money and cancelled flights.

      • +11

The only reason they arnt bust is government intervention and illegal employee relations decisions, so stop think that it wouldnt happen

    • +4

LOL “dying”. Sure, their reputation has taken a hammering, but I’ve seen no indication that people have stopped flying with them. They’re still wildly profitable, despite your opinion of them.

    • You realise they have $4bn in the bank

      • +5

You realise it is $4bn of your money the government gave them and without which they would have gone under long ago, right?

We have a name for this: it's called a "zombie company".

The way you deal with Zombies is a knife in the heart or an axe to the head (the "walking dead" taught me that)

          • +12

@AircraftFreight: Lol hasnt relied on tax payers for handouts in…

            Checks my notes: 2 years.

            Rightio

          • +4

@AircraftFreight: Only because Joyce (who will be dealt with harshly once Nuremberg 2.0 is convened) blocked any potential competitor, with the help of his government mates.

            • -3

@ginmi: Then how did Rex grow a substantial 737 fleet that’s competing against Qantas since 2021?
Virgin entered administration and it killed itself.

Say thanks to virgins management and finance incompetencies to where you are today. A 50% market share carrier.

        • +1

Rex did the same. A compant valued at 200m, took more 250m durong covid. Now they're posting huge losses because they started the 737 on the proviso that Virgin would go under and they would cut the employees wages by 10% of market value.

        • Can you please cite a source for where the government gave Qantas $4b?

Even the largest figure quoted to date was $2.7b (in total) when you add up JobKeeper + route services..

    • +10

As a former Rex employee. This company is not any better and seems to get away with a lot worse.

        • +12

No, I quit because they are a horrible, foreign owned company who destroy Australian working conditions while being in the back pocket of the LNP.

          • -5

            @starry001: Good on you!
Every single publicly listed company on the ASX is technically foreign owned.

          • +2

@starry001: Nothing wrong with foreign ownership, Australian companies also own plenty of overseas businesses, which can be good for the economy (in both directions).
Qantas is partly foreign-owned now (again, not a bad thing).
So odd how Aussies get annoyed at foreign ownership.

            • +3

@SimAus007: I'll elaborate. They took hundreds of millions of subsidies during covid while I worked up to the value of jobkeeper, and the executives gave themselves 30% payrises (mostly foreigners). During that time they used that taxpayer money to start up a jet operation on the proviso that they could pay their workers less than jetstar to be competitive. They even bragged about it (google project mother). They work hard by lobbying to destroy working conditions in Australia but complain when free market conditions cause a mass exodus of employees. It's the hardline Singaporean mentality. I have nothing wrong with Singaporean entities or Singapore in general, but actively taking government cash and trying to change corporate culture in Australia is bad.

              • @starry001: Hey, oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I don't disagree with any of what you've said in this, well aware of their cash grab of our money.
I get your point, I also blame the fed government that handed it to them, they didn't have to (Rex and Qantas for that matter).
If they are now making money now, the $$ should be handed back, it's the taxpayer's money after all, which can be used for health, infrastructure etc.

            • @SimAus007: I think qantas is 49% foreign owned, the maximum it can be ?

              Fact check anyone

      • Rex’s “Strong-Armed” Tactics Against Local Councils Exposed was a very interesting article by AFF in Dec 2020.

By our count, Rex has publicly attacked, shamed or threatened at least 12 regional Australian airport operators since 2014. Rex was the only airline serving half of these regional airports – most of which are run by local councils.

Rex’s grievances vary in substance, but often relate to disagreements over landing fee increases or the airline taking exception to something a councillor has said.

  • what are the annual membership fees?

    • Zero

  • +12

I got snacks and tea/coffee when flew from Sydney to Melbourne, at least better than Virgin with nothing unless you pay for it.
    LOL.

    • +2

Or qantas where u get half a sandwhich with 1 slice of meat in it

    • +1

I upgraded a MELSYD sector with the bid system for $25… got access to the lounge and a much better experience. Although the lounge is a few chairs and tables underground in T3 it at least has an open fridge with drinks, food and decent wi-fi

      • +1

Oh wow that's cheap as. Qantas wanted $175 from Mel-Syd.

    • +1

Virgin Australia also supplies free tea, coffee and water. Just to correct the error in your statement.
I fly once every week or two with them for business, and the only time it's not supplied, like all airlines, is on a very short route where they don't have enough time to complete this task or because of turbulence.
You are paying for it with Qantas, it's built into the cost of your ticket, so many ignore this.
Food for an airline is very expensive, they aren't just handing it out from the goodness of their hearts.

  • +10

Regular flyer with rex, love their service

The free cookies they handout are 10x the quality of the junk qantas gives

  • What’s a good way to regularly earn Rex points?

    • +15

Flying rex is probably a good start 👍

      • +11

Waiting for Rex Amex card? AmRex?

  • I'm flying with them in a couple of days; I wonder if I can get that flight credited to earn points?

    • +2

Yes, login to your account and it explains it at the bottom

Flights 30days before signing up but after 2nd of oct-23 or flights taken within 6months (one would assume the criteria there is, have an account and flight on or after october 2nd)

  • +2

I used the toilet on a REX island hop and they turned the lights off on me

    • +6

Did they need to flush you out?

  • +7

    Well this is awkward.
The Rex Flyer registration form won't accept my 2 character surname.

    • +2

I also cannot seem to get it to accept any password even when they are well within the rules - strange form

    • free airtime on Sky News

Battered and grilled in the media?¿

      • Well it is a bit fishy. It a bit hard to believe they didn't think to add at least an other or Prefer not to say option.

  • +2

Can't sign up kids without phones.
i.e. unlike other airlines, you can't use a your number again because "that number is already in use"

  • Do they support points transfer?
So, can I sign up all my family of 4, and then transfer points to one account and have 20k points to redeem on a reward seat?

  • Have they announced what bank's points can convert into Rex points? Or is earning going to be exclusively from flying rex?

    • No financial institutions looking at their website.

      • Or other partners at this stage either it seems.

  • +1

I signed up just to be one of the firsts and get a low membership number, but we are already at 80155xxxxxx

    • They may have started the numbers at 80,000 ;)

      • Yer devo i was hoping for a real low number as well
