[Refurb] MacBook Pro 14-Inch (512GB, M1 Pro Chip with 8‑Core CPU and 14‑Core GPU - Space Grey) $2,299 Posted @ Apple

390

There's no way to know how much stock there is but I've been watching the store for a month now and this is the first time they've become available.

It's the older 14" Pro model, but it a fraction of the cost and in some ways better.

  • Thanks OP for the post. In what ways is this MacBook Pro better than the equivalent M2 model? Apart from the price of course.

    • +4

      M2 is an incremental upgrade.

At launch, Apple claimed the M2 chip is 18% faster when it comes to CPU speed and that the M2 chip’s GPU is 35% faster than the M1 GPU. In our CPU testing, we saw just over a 10% increase in performance. The raw numbers are all well and good but it’s all about how it feels for the end user.

Here are the thoughts of our reviewer Max Parker, who has tested both the M1 MacBook Air and M2 MacBook Air, “I wouldn’t really recommend someone pay that extra just for the jump in performance from the M1 to the M2. There are small upgrades in all the benchmarking tests I ran which you can see below, but I didn’t notice too much extra performance in real-world use.”

      https://www.trustedreviews.com/versus/apple-m1-vs-apple-m2-w…

For day-to-day usage for most people, we will not notice a considerable improvement.

I'd get a M1-chip laptop and save money.

      • +1

The M2 is like a next step up isn't it? So M2 is about as fast as M1 Pro, M2 Pro is about the same as an M1 Max, etc.?

        • +1

Nope, its just able to use more power for extra performance. That being said, it uses slightly more power giving it slightly better performance.

          • @MA87033: But doesn't the M2 have the same number of scores as the M1 Pro, and similar benchmarks?

            • +1

@AustriaBargain: Even the M1 has the same amount of cores. The GPU is what makes the huge difference.

          • @MA87033: Yes but it's more efficient so that cancels out, It technically has longer battery life. Although all of this is insignificant day to day, both m1 and m2 machines will perform almost identically for most tasks, It's stuff like the hdmi port being 2.0 on m1 and 2.1 on m2 that matter a bit more honestly. Other than that, if you have m1 no point getting m2. M1 is still very capable

Did they change the keyboard at all?

        • +1

          Compared to what year model?

The current generation is using good keyboard - Apple is back to scissor design similar to 2015 models. A bit less travel vs 2015 but feels very similar. Physical ESC key is back. The whole touchbar nonsense is gone.

          • +1

@SickDmith: I was waiting for them to to get back to one comparable to the 2013 ish model, thanks for the feedback, sounds like they're decent again, thanks!

            • +1

@bdl: Yep, the keyboard was the only reason I wasn't upgrading my 2015 MacBook until now.

      • +1

One things to consider is that an M2 laptop will likely be supported by Apple with software updates for longer than an M1 one.

      • -1

        didn't answer the question directly

    • +2

Hard drive went from 2 chips to 1 for the 512GB model, which greatly reduces r/w and therefore overall performance.

    • +2

Apart from the M2 chips being slightly faster, the old M1 ‘only’ has HDMI 2.0 while the M2 has HDMI 2.1.

    • -6

M1 Pro is probably faster than most of our gaming computers.

      • +3

        Can it run Starfield?

        • -1

Yep. Xbox Cloud Gaming runs on M1 Pro MBP's.

Although technically it's just presenting you with Starfield, rather than directly running it.

          • +5

@guidedlight: By that measure our phones can run Starfield too

          • +2

@guidedlight: Yeah I just checked, apparently it can run Cyberpunk at 14fps, so half the performance of a Beelink with Ryzen 5600H.

          • +2

            @guidedlight: So no?

That's like saying "yes your phone can run starfield, but only when streaming it from xbox cloud".

          Game Porting Toolkit.

People use machines for purposes other than gaming

      Post a comparable alternative.

  • Storage in the title pls. Looks like 512GB.

OZBackInStock - this isn’t a deal. They’ve been this price for a very long time now. Was better value with various GC and cash back options a few months ago.

Don’t get me wrong this is a very nice machine and I think ok value, but I don’t want people to think it is some ATL or amazing bargain, because it ain’t.

    • +3

You still can get this M1 Pro with the current 15% off Ultimate egift cards

      • Is this through purchasing Apple gift cards from jb Hi-Fi?

      • +1

Probably worth the OP mentioning then? As the current price/ deal stated isn’t a bargain

      • -1

Can you purchase apple gift cards using jb gift cards, dont think thats possible

        • +2

You’re not purchasing a JB gift card
Have a read on the 18 pages of comments on that deal

    • Same energy for ps5 'deals' then please.

  • and in some ways better

    In which ways better?

    • +1

More chips on the base ssd model for more speed

    • Running cooler.

  • +1

    Looks like OOS already

  • OOS

  • Not a deal, new used to be around this price from OW/amazon before it discontinued.

    • I keep hearing not a deal but they sell out in like 5 minutes!.. Or I hear the M2 refurb is better… and yeah, they don't make antiques like they used to either… Anybody got a link as to where I can get one of these suckers at this 'not a deal' price?.. TIA

  • Not bad, but M2 refurb has HDMI 2.1 if you care

  • I bought an Apple certified refurbished MBP 14 M1 Pro with the exact config 6 months ago, hasn't missed a beat. The fans hardly turn on, the CPU is that efficient.

    • Do you find that SSD swap is constantly being used? Can be checked in the Activity Monitor.

      • +1

Checked, and nope, not even used.

      • The Pro/Max series has 16GB of RAM as standard, so you won't be swapping to disk unless you're constantly maxing out the RAM.

        • Yea, depends on the usage.

Checking my current usage in M1 Max MBP:

          Physical Memory: 64.00 GB
          Memory Used: 48.15 GB
          Cached Files: 14.83 GB
          Swap Used: 0 bytes

          • @sridhar: Here's mine: (14" M1 Max MBP)

            Physical Memory: 32.00 GB
            Memory Used: 27.16 GB
            Cached Files: 4.75 GB
            Swap Used: 0 bytes

Currently running Docker + DDEV, around 50-60 Chrome tabs, MS Teams, Amazon WorkSpaces.

            • @deadpoet: I have a feeling I should be ok with 32 GB RAM and the apps simply use more memory because more is available to be used.

I have a ton more tabs in multiple browsers open + Local + VSCode + PhpStorm + about 40-50 apps running at the same time though.

What wrong with get the new M2 Air? Performs pretty well ?
The Pro line isn't great value.

    • +2

Just the opposite, Pro line has much better value than Air IMO, If you need to upgrade anything on the Air (eg: to 16GB 512G), price is easily on par or a bit higher than Pro.

    • +2

Air only if the base model meets your computing needs. As soon as you begin upping the config, Pro is a better value for money.

    • i’m waiting for killer on the air m2 then my intel air can retire.

    • +1

Air doesn’t have a fan so for literally any sustained load (e.g. compiling, video editing, etc) a Pro will be much more performant. Throw in a better SOC and the pro 14” will handle any load better than an Air. The better screen, webcam, etc are all nice bonuses too.

They’re two different ranges catering to two different use cases.

      • u are right, Air maxes out at 8 core CPU+ missing ports + lower quality display + lower quality speakers+ faster charger+ bigger battery, and once u up the Air to 16gb ram+ 512GB SDD (which are bare minimum requirements), cost is pretty much on par with the 14" Pro plus all the missing features of pro

Even if you are not after high performance, the display is superior on MBP- would rather get a base model Pro than an upgraded Air

  • Deal is done but I'd rather buy M2 air or pay more for M2 Pro

    • Why’s that?

      • Them ballin'.
