Seeking Advice for Choosing a Laptop

I will start studying IT(Bachelor). My major is artificial intelligence.

One of my seniors told me to buy a laptop which has a dedicated GPU (for machine learning). But laptops with GPU don't last long. Battery life is very short.

Can anyone suggest me a good laptop? Or should I buy a mid-budget gaming laptop? such as -

★Acer Nitro 5 (i-5 12450H, 3050RTX)
★MSI Katana GF66 (i-5 12450H 3050RTX)
★Lenevo Legion 5i (i-5 12500H 3050RTX)
★Gigabyte G5 (i-5 12 Gen 4050RTX)

Or should I buy normal laptop such as -

** Asus Vivabook
**HP Pavilion
**etc

Thanks in advance.

Gaming laptops aren't very portable and workstation laptops like Lenovo P series only have limited GPU power (e.g RTX A500 with 4GB vram) and cost quite a bit. you're looking at over $2000 for a P14s with an entry level workstation GPU.

Do you have to perform the workloads on your laptop? I'd just build a more powerful ML rig at home and then SSH into the workstation so you don't have to worry about running out of juice. Or ask you uni if you have access to their computing resources or cloud

Get a light & portable laptop with integrated graphics so you would actually want to bring it to uni everyday (and sufficient battery that will actually last a day). Then get a cheap gaming desktop with dedicated GPU to remote in to do your work.

    • another vote here for lightweight laptop and punchy one at home

      thin clients are back baby!

    • This is roughly what I do.

I've run a few ML models on my desktop PC and just accessed it remotely.

+1. OP, I reckon get a laptop that's portable, (somewhat) functional, and reliable. You will probably have access to lab computers and can remote access to home computers. I see gaming laptops as a weird in-between that is neither powerful nor portable.

    Egpu?

  • Last 2 deals, as mentioned above:

    light laptop - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/801136

    home desktop - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/801147

    total $2k.

Desktop you can buy later when needed.

    • More VRAM may be required if you're playing with ML

Then he can buy a better desktop when needed or upgrade card (VRAM). Usually for uni projects not much will be required.
