Cost to Respray Roof of Mazda CX-5?

Hey all

My family's CX-5 picked up some hail damage in a recent storm. It's currently getting repaired through insurance however because it had some pre-existing sun damage on the roof, insurance won't cover the roof respray.
Just wondering what a fair figure might be to paint it. The current repairer said in the ballpark of $3500. And possibly a need to replace the windscreen to do so. Which wouldn't be cheap either.

Does this seem like a reasonable amount or excessive?

And I also wondered if a wrap could be done on the roof as a cheaper alternative?

Cheers

"current repairer said in the ballpark of $3500."
    That's a we're too busy quote surely.
So if you don't pay it, what will be the outcome? A patchwork appearance?

@spackbace: arkie0 confused as to why OP wasn’t sunscreening their cars roof to prevent sun damage.

            • @jjjaar:

sunscreening their cars roof to prevent sun damage.

Which would have inadvertently hastened the deterioration of the paint.

      • The first CX-5 was released after my car was made, it sits outside in the sun everyday.
No sun damage, that's what is hard to understand.

Wait, you don't even own a cx-5, but you think you know how good their paint quality is?

          Right

@spackbace: slow clap I own another type of Mazda.

            • @deme: And?

@spackbace: What makes you think you have any idea what the CX-5 paint quality is like?

@deme: I don't, but I trust when someone says their car has sun damage, that it has sun damage…

Let alone colour or how the car is stored..but yeah, all Mazdas of all colours are the same :)

I know my old Mazda had clear coat failure on its roof that began well before it was 10yrs old, yet plenty of other Mazdas of the same model and age in other colours were still in good condition.

            • @SBOB: maybe how you look after your car matters? Once a year car wash vs monthly bubble bath with bit of a happy-ending ;)

Didn't slip slop slap the roof with SPF50+

    • Forgot to apply zinc

So get the insurance to fix the hail damage to the same standard the roof was before the hail damage occurred.

  • Seems excessive… wasn't the roof but a few years back my car was in an accident and whilst in the shop, i asked how much extra to fix some paint damage on the quarter panel unrelated to the accident and paid something like <$300

    • That's because they are already doing prep work, mixing the paint, preparing and cleaning the the gun etc.

If you just asked for a quote on the quarter panel only it would cost a lot more.

      • not just that but

        a few years back

prices have gone up. I guarantee that "$300" would be $750 now.

      • indeed - i presumed the OP was already getting some paint but maybe not…
the paint job was okay but they did also manage to leave the boot open whilst painting and I got white overspray specs through my black carpet…
And they somehow managed to lose a badge temporarily removed from the car to facilitate and I later found out it is not available to buy for parts anymore after they offered me $50 off for compensation… I think the paint fumes had got to them

Sounds excessive, but it does depend if their additional paint work going on. It also depends on what standard you expect from them. Ie happy with it just looking ok from a distance or want a full quality job.

If they are painting other parts of the car it shouldn’t be to much work for them to give it a quick rub back, mask it off some extra areas, mix some extra paint and give it a quick coat. Lots of cars get that sort of treatment. If there is no paint work with the hail repairs it’ll cost more because there is a fair amount of work to set up the paint process.

I just had some repairs to a car quoted at around $3500. It included some new parts and painting an adjacent panel to blend the repair. I’m reasonably certain they would have painted the extra panels without removing them from the car.

take a gamble, find someone on airtasker with good 'reviews'

    • Yeah, I found a shop to spray a ute lid (about the same size as a roof) for $700 a few years back - was a real good job.

    • take a gamble

On a warm summer's evenin' on a train bound for nowhere?

  • What colour is your car?

Respray on a roof should be at most $1,000. Generally it can cost more if the windows break when being taken out and put back in. Given you aren't changing the color though might be able to get away without taking windows out.

Shop around, panel besters pricers usually range big time. Not uncommon for a $500 job at one place to be $4,000 somewhere else, regardless of quality.

  • OP … you are yet to say how old the car is - CX-5 == built from 2012 until present.

If near new can understand about getting roof resprayed.
but if even 5 years old +++ how long do you intend to keep car (or planning on selling it straight away).

Will need to weigh up cost VS possible resale value - if/when you do sell it.

[EDIT] … also respraying parts of a car == very very hard to match 100% the same colour as rest - especially if car is a few years old (other panels already had some sun deteiration).
