Help Needed: Nintendo Switch Screen Issue - What Are My Options

Last week, I took my Nintendo Switch out of the dock like I've done countless times before, only to find that the screen was completely black with a few small blue pixels and a small crack in the screen. I've always used a screen protector to keep it safe, and I didn't drop it or mishandle it in any way.

I sent the console to Nintendo for assessment, hoping it might be covered under warranty, as it’s just over a year old. Unfortunately, Nintendo has assessed the issue as damage rather than a fault, and therefore not covered by warranty. They’ve presented me with three options:

  1. Pay $50 to return it as is, with a broken screen.
  2. Pay $165 for them to repair it.
  3. Dispose of the console at no cost.

Given the circumstances, I feel like I could still argue that this is a fault with the console or dock as all I did was take it out of the dock one day and it was broken. Does anyone have any experience with the ACCC or fair trading regarding something like this? Is it worth arguing a fault or should I just pay the repair cost?

    small crack in the screen

That's user damage. Not a manufacturing fault.

    • wait you sure it's not the ants?

  • ACCC would not bother. Just give it to them and move on.

Is it worth arguing a fault

    How would you prove it?

You or someone you live with damaged it. I'd just pay the $165, because after $50 return cost youd have difficulty finding someone to supply and replace with an OEM screen for $115.

ACCC and Fair Trading don't deal with individual cases, you'd have to go to xCAT.

Also, even mentioning these as options when it's clearly user damage (either yourself or someone else) is plain silly.

  • hmm do you use case on it? the dock is designed for a switch console without case or probably not even with screen protector (the glass ones).
the dock has very tight space

Kids damaged it then put it back?

    • This is my guess too. You shouldn't be able to crack the screen by inserting or removing it from the dock.

maybe get constant sun? or next to fire pit?

    • I throw my switch into the fire pit to charge it, and the screen has no cracks. Def not caused by the fire pit.

  • There is no way you can ever argue that a crack in the screen is a fault, even if there was a fault previously the damage negates any responsibility they have to fix it.

its worth about $200-250 2nd hand fixed, so i would just buy a new oled model one myself.

  • You want to involve the ACCC?

To anyone inspecting the device, Nintendo included, it looks as though you have damaged the item.
Which would not be covered by warranty.

You suggesting it happened without any human intervention is simply your word against the word of trained professionals who inspect damaged Switches for a living, so I don't like your chances, even though what you're describing isn't totally unheard of.

  • Okay thanks for the responses.

I know taking up with the ACCC was pretty far fetched but I was just sussing out all of my options.

I don’t have any kids and no one else would have touched the console. I think the most likely cause of this was I started using a grip which claimed to be dockable, the Skull & Co. NeoGrip which may have put pressure on the screen while i was either removing it or putting it in the dock. This grip has a lot of good reviews but it’s not licensed by Nintendo. I will pay the repair fee.

    • thats what i tried to say above….
