ASUS RT-AX58U AX3000 Dual-Band Gigabit Router Black $239 Delivered + SCh @ Computer Alliance (Price Beat $227.05 @ Officeworks)

71

Was shopping for an asus router and came across this today. Most places, including officeworks have this router for $299 so I think this is a decent deal considering it is also free delivery. 1% surcharge for card & PayPal payments.

Note the v2 of this model doesn't support Merlin, nonetheless a good model.

    • How do you know what version is being sold? Is it on the box?

      • At this stage I'd assume every version is v2. I don't think there's any v1 stock left.

        • Ah i also read your comment the wrong way around, strange they dropped support

          • @flux: V2 has an upgraded chipset and the developer hasn't included it yet as he's supporting too many models. Pretty fair to be honest, they all have different drivers.

        • The only versioning I am aware of is this model's box used to be AX3000, then that was phased out with box printed AX-58U. Is that what you mean? The hardware looked identical.

    • Note (not sure how much it truly matters but) the V1 is also only a Dual core processor, not a Quad core processor like the V2.

You can get 42 more antennas for $10 more at AliExpress.

Was really hoping to see this router drop to the previous deal price, or the AX56U to $100. Not sure if the price difference between the two models is worth it to be honest.

  • Is this router better than let’s say Optus Sagecomm router with 4g backup? (I understand it’ll not have 4g backup)
I’ve got a gigabit HFC with ~850-900 Mbps wired and ~400-600 Mbps wireless (depending on device). At times I get sketchy wireless performance with smart speakers and some rare dropouts.
Would this or any other router be a much better option for higher speeds & better performance?

I came from the black, then white Optus Sagemcomm free router.

In short: if you need better control, say parental control, more traffic monitoring, schedule and configuration. Ability to create a mesh network for best possible coverage, then yes, worth it by alot.

If you don't care for that level of control then speed wise I have not noticed anything dramatic between the 2 on ethernet or WiFi… albeit I am on 50/17 HCF and typical household of around 15 devices. If you have more…like 50…the i guess it could place more load on CPU, so Asus would be better in that case too.

217 at Amazon but the product name is confusing…AX-58U V2 / AX3000 it says.

  • Got two of these meshed across my house. No complaints at all, have been great

  • only had negative experience with Computer Alliance. bought a product and they dropped the price by $60 within return period (10%)

in addition to that, I was the one to post the product as deal here.

I politely suggested they consider refunding at least partially the difference between what I paid and what they were selling it for now, but in return they were very rude and banned me from buying anything from their eBay store.

I think their behaviour was completely inappropriate, and not something that should be encouraged.

    • Computer shops are super low margin. Prices are constantly dropping if they went around refunding price differences like you ask that'd be more work for them, and I would think even crippling to the business. can't fathom them banning you tho, must have said some nasty things. Not blaming you, and am not defending them, but reactions don't happen for no reason.

What I do after dropping a large sum on computer bits is to stop checking prices after purchase. You will only disappoint yourself.
