Would You Buy BYD Atto 3 EV or MG 4 EV?

Hi Guys,

Help me to decide.

I am planning to get an EV.

Which one would you recommend and why?

I am interested in getting BYD Atto 3, What are your thoughts on this?

  1. What is the current government rebate on EVs? (I am in WA)
  2. Do you own one? What is the actual battery driving range for BYD Atto3 Standard?
  3. How much the servicing cost?
  4. What needs to be serviced?
  5. Do you get notification on what needs to be serviced (Something like Tesla)?
  6. How is the safety features looks like?
  7. How much the comprehensive insurance cost?

Any other thoughts/recommendation?

Thanks in advance for your valuable time reading and commenting.

Literally all of these questions are Googleable. Why would you not do that first?

I don’t get it either, it is really easy to find and normally from a reputable site, not a bunch of random keyboard warriors.

If you want to use a forum most effectively you have to ask a question but also post your own opinion/answer to see how many people tell you you’re wrong

the re-sale value on all these cars is terrible

people 'often' look to much at sticker price and not enough at what the car is worth then they plan to turn it in.

If you're buying a Merc or Porcha i kind of 'assume' you dont care about resale value but on the lower end of the market Chinese cars are cheaper to buy but loose the resale value making the Japanese and Korean cars better bang for ones buck imho

      EVs aren't so bad!

They are but another way to directly support the car industry, slowly implementing new ways to produce near-100% green-washed products, whilst maintaining maximum carbon impact.

      • +3

My EV is charged from the solar panels on my roof during the afternoon. Of course, there are environmental impacts in mining the materials and building the car and solar panels, and these are typically higher than ICE vehicles, but after that there are none. No emissions and no extraction, production and distribution of petrol.

        • Wishful thinking.

EV owners overstate the green creds. You need to take into account the lifestyle behind the owner, long term issues, what areas the mines obliterate, the panel GHG input (over a lifetime from the raw materials, disposal at end life etc.
Basically if you are on or feeding into the grid you lose a lot of your cred right there.

We need to stop proliferating humans not more EVs

You don't escape your Karma or your footprint without doing all the maths.

          • +3

            @Protractor:

You need to take into account the lifestyle behind the owner, long term issues, what areas the mines obliterate, the panel GHG input (over a lifetime from the raw materials, disposal at end life etc.

For the last two, of course. That's the primary environmental impact and I already mentioned that. For the first two, I'm not sure how that relates to my car.

Basically if you are on or feeding into the grid you lose a lot of your cred right there.

I lose cred by providing energy from the sun into the grid?

You don't escape your Karma or your footprint without doing all the maths

I did all the maths and it's much better for the environment. Why are you trying to understate my impact?

            • -1

@dazweeja: You did the maths? Oh, do share!

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of regenerative braking, but it is very old hat.

I would really love for my back yard, common sense, practical hypothesis to be proved incorrect that buying a new car (of any kind) over maintaining an old one (Note: not abusing, maintaining) can provide any green credit whatsoever.

Feeding the grid locally is certainly good in simple theory, but if adding up a method to reduce emissions and energy wastage, I'd argue that a grid (anything like the way we've built it), is a long way from good!

Did you simply compare a new ICE car vs new EV car = EV car good if charged from your own roof or another 'green' source?

But did you even calculate the impact of cloud on the overall amount of carbon-free charging you do? Most people have too little solar generation at home, and do too many miles, let alone remain at home enough during their working life to achieve anything here.

            • @dazweeja: Better screw up your maths homework paper and redo it >

  • Wouldn't buy a BYD purely because they appear to have sub-contracted servicing and warranty to MyCar. I assume that means no parts on the shelf and every warranty job needing several visits, very little vehicle specific training and no skin in the game and therefore no f***s given.

    • -2

I disagree! The free market will find a way to develop quality maintenance services.

Once it has filled every landfill with E-Bikes, Scooters, Vehicles and Robots.

MyCar (K-mart and other multinationals) will simply make hay in the meantime.

      • +1

MyCar (K-mart and other multinationals) will simply make hay in the meantime.

You've obviously resisted the urge to get your facts right.

Wesfarmers (who own K-Mart) sold KTAS to Continental in 2018. K-Mart Australia is not and never will be a multi-national.

        • +2

The distinctions you draw here really don't really count.

My point is that it was owned by a multi-national. Which was substantively correct (given K-Mart was owned by Wesfarmers).

Now sold up the multi-national chain, to one of the world's most significant natural resource hungry multi-nationals, expanding its automotive footprint. Any hope of quality service and green creds- truly toasted. (Rubber tapping is one of the most ethically challenged forest industries).

          • @resisting the urge: In what way is Wesfarmers a multinational?

            • @brad1-8tsi: It owns many foreign companies, both wholly and in part, and runs revenues through numerous foreign accounts. Participates in numerous overseas corporate deals, relationships, and no doubt hedges forex, or deals and who knows what else via Bermuda.

              • @resisting the urge: name those companies.

When did you last read Wesfarmers annual report?

                • +1

@brad1-8tsi: Might need to go deeper than that. Not inc. New Zealand, they run the following entities:

BYD have their own service centres piggybacked onto Eager’s Automotive centres. MyCar is a supplement arrangement that is used for basic servicing and low level warranty concerns.

Added to this, not all MyCar outlets are equipped to service BYD vehicles any more than what your local independent guy would be.

What is the current government rebate on EVs? (I am in WA) - Google it, I don't live in WA
Do you own one? What is the actual battery driving range for BYD Atto3 Standard? - I own one. Varies greatly on the speed you're doing. Around town, basically uses nothing. I did a return day trip but took different highways each way. Doing 110-115 used about 20% more electricity than the 100km/h the opposite way. I find I drive slower now I know that it costs me! Don't put the sunroof down if you're worried about range.
How much the servicing cost? Google it, fixed price. It's something like $3k over 8 years
What needs to be serviced? Google it, but mostly "the car".
Do you get notification on what needs to be serviced (Something like Tesla)? I have no idea what a Tesla does but it pops up a notification when it's due
How is the safety features looks like? They look like they exist
How much the comprehensive insurance cost? About as much as it usually costs for a car.

Key annoyances - software is a hot mess, but I just use apple carplay. They're still rolling out updates though, there was a software update to stop the windows fogging up (and it works too). Lane assist is incredibly annoying, make sure you put it on vibration only - audio goes bonkers. Pretty comfortable to drive in, I'm out of shape with a bad knee and I can do a couple of hundred km easily.

I've heard the MG is amazing to drive though - I would have bought that were it available at the time. Test drive both, buy the one you like, simples.

This was in today's paper. Anyone knows which car company this yard belongs to?
Five cars destroyed at sydney airport after battery from luxury electric vehicle ignites

Donesn't look to be Tesla's as there clearly are hatchbacks stored here, and the door handles of burnt cars don't look Tesla's.

Op, just stay away from this company! you don't want this to happen in your garage.

    • +1

Funnily enough, it’s an MG that caught alight. You can tell from the door handles and wheels. It’s a ZS EV.

      1, 2

      • +1

Hmmm, I was leaning towards it but wasn't 100% sure - thanks for confirming. I think BYD is technically better than other Chinese makes, BYD being a primary battery manufacturer.

        • I’m torn, I think I’d go for the MG4, but I take your point.

What I’d be very curious to know is what the “safety record” is like vs an ICE vehicle. Because sometimes they spontaneously combust in the garage too

          • @jackary: Not an expert on the subject but larger brands Tesla, BYD could be relatively safer given they've been in the business of making EVs for quite some time and their designs are somewhat proven. New entrants in EV space appear to have teething problems while their designs evolve.

What is the current government rebate on EVs? (I am in WA)

Can’t use Google or WA gov website?

    Do you own one?

    Yes

What is the actual battery driving range for BYD Atto3 Standard?

Don’t know, I have extended range, and I get about 420km (giggity) around town or about 380km on mostly highway.

    How much the servicing cost?

Again, can’t use Google or use the BYD website?

    What needs to be serviced?

Not much. Most of the service is checks, cabin filters and software updates. Front drivetrain oil needs to be replaced at 20,000km

Do you get notification on what needs to be serviced (Something like Tesla)?

Not what needs to be serviced, but “when”

How is the safety features looks like?

Huh? What are they or how do they look?

How much the comprehensive insurance cost?

How long is a piece of string? Everyone has vastly different circumstances, so everyone would get a different price. Mine is about $750/year.

Have a ZSEV- so can't answer for the MG4 specifically (I have test driven all 3) but MG software is essentially the same framework in both- yes there are some level of indication of faults in the system. MG servicing is fixed price alternating. MG4 is a good drive, comfy, zippy. Only worry I had was that the nose felt low for steep driveways, but I am known for my worry about nose diving a driveway! Overall I was happy with my test drive of the 4- though I also don't agree the ZSEV is as terrible as everyone makes out (reviews saying the MG4 is "miles better" are kind of exaggerating) and I didn't like the BYD, so YMMV. Oh, the power modes are a lot smoother in the MG4 for than the ZSEV (no really obvious power drop) but not as heavy feeling as the BYD, I found (except in Eco mode, which it sort of eased into). The regen brake modes are a little smoother too (MGs regen on releasing the accelerator on higher settings, BYD on braking apparently, so that would drive differently.

MG Pilot safety features are pretty solid- 360 cameras, front and rear radar, vehicle and pedestrian emergency braking, lane keep assist (though 100% day one turn this to alert mode only). Air bags. Just note the MG4 only has full 360 cams on the Trophy 64 and up so if you're gonna get one, go the Trophy. I would probably have gone for an MG4 myself if I had known when they were coming or any other information when I ordered the ZSEV.

As for range, a rough estimate is probably take the listed spec and round it down (320 listed for my model ZSEV, I get about 300) but to be honest, I get 3 trips to work before I feel like I'd like to charge, 4 if I don't mind being a bit low by the end. Heck, if you are worried, granny-plug her in each time you get home and keep her topped up (or at around 80%, if its a long range). I got a wallbox put in (single phase) so 25% to full is around 5-6 hours over night and I'm good to go. Basically, don't stress too much about range for day to day stuff, and longer trips Plugshare is your friend.

My first service 1000kms was basically a software update and a wash (pretty sure an MG4 one would be the same). MG having dealerships around might be a consideration in terms of servicing. My next service isn't for 2 ish years, so no idea what a major would look like. The car does tell you when the service is coming due and if there are any faults in any system, including tire pressure.

I'm in Vic, so rebate is currently negative 2.8c/km… Though MG themselves have a deal think going on where you get a rebate and a wall charger (of course, after my car arrived- though I got the last of the Vic rebate, so hey). Insurance for me is $195 a month, but that is comprehensive + fleet benefit because I'm on a novated lease.

Honest foible I have with mine is that there is nothing stopping you going into drive and moving off before the car is "ready" (aka booted), so occasionally the system won't start completely (mainly one of the radars won't kick on completely and you get a warning). Turning off then on again, or waiting until the boot is done (30 seconds at most) is fine. The MG4 fixed this by locking you in neutral until the boot up is done- again, a short wait, but I was used to an ICE. The car itself is a good egg, the software might need a bug fix or two…

In short- test drive, you will find you prefer one or the other, order the one you prefer. Done and done. Surely a good amount of a decision about a car is "which would I rather drive", right?

    • Thanks for your reply.

      • Can update now I have been around someone with an MG4 77 Essence (as a passenger, and comparing our cars a fair bit). The MG4 is a solid car, has nearly eliminated the software wibbles from the ZS (there is still some things that are a bit annoying, like it resetting drive mode/regen settings, but eh). I have a bit of car envy now (though not regretting my car choice either). If you go MG4, go for something Essence line so you get 360 cameras and avoid the weird ugly "too tight for a spoiler" covers that look like you are missing a part for no reason. Don't bother with the super fast tiny willy edition, the normal MG4 (and any EV generally, except a Dolphin) is zippy as all get out and there is no need for a 0-100 in 3 inches starter. Also invest in a basket or crate for the boot to put the cables in. Unlike the ZS, the MG4 doesn't have a space in the boot for cables to sit.

  • funnily enough i have the same curiousity about the three competing products… ie. BYO ATTO vs. GWM Ora vs. MG4

but none of the questions OP asks is any I care about… simply because they are easily found and they're only a small proportion of the choice

    eg. warranty??? service locations?

to me the only choice is the MG4 but anyway…
